Alright, pull up a chair. If you’re anything like me, after a day spent conquering the trails of Snowdonia (or, let’s be honest, just wandering around trying to find where you parked the car near Coed y Brenin), there is only one thing on the mind: a cold pint and a plate of something that didn’t come out of a backpack.
I’m Peter Dive, and I’ve spent more hours than I care to admit scouting out the best spots in North Wales to watch the sun dip behind the peaks. Living and working here at the Rhiw Goch Inn in Bronaber, near Trawsfynydd, I’ve made it my personal mission to know exactly where the best "sundowner" spots are.
It’s June 15th, 2026, and the light is currently lingering over the Rhinogydd mountains until nearly 10:00 PM. It’s magic. But you can't live on magic alone: you need a good local pub. Whether you're staying in our Lodge House, pitching a tent at our campsite, or just passing through on the A470, here is my curated list of the 10 best local pubs and family eateries you absolutely need to know about.
1. The Home Turf: Rhiw Goch Inn
Postcode: LL41 4UY
I might be biased, but there is nowhere else in the world I’d rather be when the sky turns pink. We’re located right in Bronaber, and while I’m currently neck-deep in the renovation of our 16th-century Grade 2 listed inn (restoring it to its former glory as a tavern and games room), the grounds are where the real action happens.
Our campsite guests get a front-row seat to the best sunset in Wales. If you’re staying in The Hideaway, you can literally watch the sun vanish over the Rhinogydd mountains from your window. We’re perfectly positioned for that post-hike relaxation. Keep an eye on our progress at www.rhiwgochinn.co.uk: soon enough, I’ll be pouring you a pint inside those historic stone walls myself!
2. The Cross Foxes, Trawsfynydd
Address: Fronwynion St, Trawsfynydd, LL41 4SE
Just a stone’s throw from us (about a 3-minute drive or a decent stroll if you’re feeling athletic) is The Cross Foxes. This is a proper village pub. It sits right by the edge of Trawsfynydd Lake (Llyn Trawsfynydd), which is the largest lake in the area.
If you’ve spent the morning fishing or cycling the lake loop, this is your afternoon reward. They do a "Full Welsh" breakfast that could restart a dead engine, but in the evenings, it’s all about the classic pub grub. It’s family-friendly, unpretentious, and exactly what a local pub should be.

3. The Grapes Hotel, Maentwrog
Address: Maentwrog, Blaenau Ffestiniog, LL41 4HY
If you want history, The Grapes has it in spades. It’s about a 10-minute drive from Rhiw Goch Inn. It’s one of the oldest coaching inns in Wales, and you can feel the stories in the floorboards.
What I love about this place is the terrace. When the weather is like this in June, sitting outside with a view over the Vale of Ffestiniog is hard to beat. They have a fantastic menu that steps slightly above your average "chips with everything" fare: think local steaks and fresh fish. It’s a great spot for a slightly "fancier" family dinner after a day at the Ffestiniog Railway.
4. The Bryn Arms, Gellilydan
Address: Gellilydan, Blaenau Ffestiniog, LL41 4EN
This is one of those "if you know, you know" spots. Located just up the road from Bronaber, The Bryn Arms is a favorite for the mountain biking crowd heading back from Coed y Brenin Forest Park.
It’s got a 4.3-star rating for a reason. The atmosphere is always buzzing, especially during the summer months. It’s the kind of place where you can turn up with muddy boots (within reason!) and feel right at home. The portions are legendary: perfect for replenishing the calories you burnt off on the trails.
5. The Golden Fleece Inn, Tremadog
Address: 12 Market Square, Tremadog, Porthmadog, LL49 9RB
Now, this one is about a 20-minute drive, but it’s worth every mile. The Golden Fleece is multi-award winning, and for good reason. The cellar bar is incredibly atmospheric (it's built into the rock!), but the upstairs restaurant is where the magic happens.
If you’re traveling with kids who are picky eaters, this is a safe bet. They manage to balance high-quality, locally sourced Welsh ingredients with a menu that appeals to everyone. Plus, Tremadog itself is a gorgeous little village to walk around after dinner.

6. Prince Llewelyn Hotel, Beddgelert
Address: Smith St, Beddgelert, Caernarfon, LL55 4YB
You can’t visit Snowdonia without stopping in Beddgelert. It’s probably the most "Instagrammable" village in North Wales, and the Prince Llewelyn sits right in the heart of it.
It’s exceptionally dog-friendly (which we love, being dog-lovers ourselves at the Inn) and very welcoming to families. After you’ve walked the path to Gelert’s Grave, grab a table here. The views of the surrounding peaks are staggering, and they often have local live music during the weekends in June. Speaking of music, if you’re here for the Eryri’s Soundscape events this month, this is a great base.
7. Pengwern Arms, Llan Ffestiniog
Address: Church St, Llan Ffestiniog, LL41 4PB
This is a community-run pub, and you can really feel the local pride. It’s about 4 miles from our base in Trawsfynydd. It’s the definition of a "hub."
What I like about the Pengwern is its simplicity. It’s not trying to be a Michelin-starred gastro-pub; it’s a place for the community to gather. They often host local events and have a great outdoor area for the kids to blow off some steam while you enjoy a quiet drink.
8. Tyn-y-Coed Hotel, Capel Curig
Address: Capel Curig, Betws-y-Coed, LL24 0EE
If you’ve been tackling the bigger peaks like Moel Siabod or heading towards the Ogwen Valley, the Tyn-y-Coed is a mandatory stop. It’s about a 30-40 minute drive from Rhiw Goch Inn, but the drive through the heart of the mountains is part of the experience.
They have a massive outdoor seating area that looks directly out at the mountains. It’s a popular spot for hikers, so the vibe is always energetic and full of "I just climbed that" stories. Their "Walkers' Specials" are always a winner.
9. Pont y Pair Inn, Betws-y-Coed
Address: Holyhead Rd, Betws-y-Coed, LL24 0BA
Betws-y-Coed is the "gateway" to Snowdonia, and it can get busy. The Pont y Pair Inn is situated right by the famous bridge and falls.
It’s a classic, solid choice for families. The menu is extensive, and because it’s right in the middle of the village, it’s perfect for a bit of people-watching. If you’re heading back from the Conwy Pirate Festival (happening June 13-14 this year!), this is a great halfway point for a meal on your way back to your accommodation at Bronaber.

10. Snowdonia Parc Inn, Waunfawr
Address: Waunfawr, Caernarfon, LL55 4AQ
This one is a bit of a trek (about 45 minutes), but I have to include it because they brew their own beer on-site! It’s also right next to a station for the Welsh Highland Railway.
There’s something incredibly satisfying about watching a steam train chug past while you’re tucking into a pie and a pint of "Snowdonia Ale." It’s a hit with kids (who doesn't love a steam train?) and beer enthusiasts alike.
A Little Local News for Your June Visit
If you’re staying with us this week, there’s plenty going on. The Gottwood Festival is wrapping up over on Anglesey if you fancy a bit of electronic music vibe, but for something more local, the North Wales Pilgrim Trail Marathon just finished, and the atmosphere in the local pubs is still buzzing with the achievements of the runners.
Also, a quick update on the Rhiw Goch Inn project: the underfloor heating in the Lodge House is getting rave reviews from our June guests. Even though the days are warm, there's nothing like that cozy feeling when the mountain air cools down at night.
Why Stay at Rhiw Goch Inn?
While we’re talking about great food and drinks, don’t forget that the best place to start and end your day is right here with us. Whether you’re in our luxury Lodge House, the cozy Hideaway, or enjoying the simple life at our campsite, you’re in the heart of it all.
We’re just off the A470, making every one of these pubs easily accessible, yet we’re quiet enough that the only thing you’ll hear at night is the distant sheep and the wind in the trees.
