There’s something about the air in Snowdonia that just makes you hungrier. Maybe it’s the way the wind whips off the Rhinogydd mountains while you’re out hiking, or perhaps it’s the sheer effort of trying to convince the kids that "just one more mile" isn't a lie. Either way, by the time the sun starts its slow dip toward the horizon, my mind is usually firmly fixed on two things: a cold pint and a plate of something hearty.
I’m Peter Dive, and if you’ve been following our journey here at Rhiw Goch Inn (LL41 4UY), you’ll know I’m neck-deep in restoring our 16th-century tavern. It’s a labour of love, and while the builders are busy turning the old girl back into the heart of the community, I’ve spent a fair bit of "research" time (that’s my story and I’m sticking to it) finding the best places to eat and play around Bronaber and Trawsfynydd.
Whether you're staying in our beautifully renovated Lodge House, cozying up in The Hideaway, or pitch-perfect at our Snowdonia campsite, you need a solid plan for family feasts and those all-important sundowners. Here is my personal local’s guide to keeping the whole gang fed and happy within an hour of our front gate.
1. The Immediate Local: Trawsfynydd & Bronaber
You don't have to travel far for a warm welcome. Right here in Bronaber, we’re focused on providing the ultimate base for your North Wales holiday. While our main tavern is under renovation, we’re always happy to point guests toward the best local spots for a sunset view that’ll make your Instagram followers weep with envy.
- The Cross Foxes, Trawsfynydd (LL41 4DT): Just a few minutes down the road. It’s a proper traditional pub. Great for a post-walk burger and a chat with the locals. They’re great with families and groups, which is exactly what you want after a day exploring the lake.
- Llyn Trawsfynydd: You can’t beat a late afternoon stroll or cycle around the reservoir. It’s flat (mostly!), easy for the kids, and the views of the mountains reflected in the water are world-class.

2. Adventure and Eats in Blaenau Ffestiniog (15 Mins Drive)
Head north on the A470 for about 15 minutes and you’ll hit the "slate capital" of the world. It’s rugged, it’s dramatic, and it’s home to some of the best family activities in the UK.
- Zip World Llechwedd (LL41 3NB): From deep mine tours to bouncing on underground nets, it’s a kid's dream. But for the adults? The Bar & Restaurant at Plas Weunydd is a revelation. It’s modern, stylish, and serves up fantastic food that’s a step above your usual tourist fare.
- Ffestiniog Railway: Catch a steam train down to Porthmadog. There is something deeply satisfying about the click-clack of the tracks and the smell of the steam while you wind through the valley. It’s a top-tier family day out.
3. The Mountain Biker’s Fuel: Coed y Brenin (20 Mins Drive)
If you’re here for the trails: and let’s be honest, many of our guests are: Coed y Brenin Forest Park (LL40 2HZ) is your mecca. It’s one of the reasons people choose a holiday in North Wales year after year.
- The Visitor Centre Cafe: After tackling the 'Beast' or the 'Dragon’s Back', you need cake. Their cafe does excellent hot food and massive slices of cake that are medically required for recovery.
- Sundowner Tip: If you’re heading back to Rhiw Goch Inn from here, stop at one of the laybys on the A470 just before Bronaber. The way the light hits the valley as the sun goes down is nothing short of magical.
4. Beddgelert: Folklore and Ice Cream (30 Mins Drive)
Beddgelert (LL55 4YB) is probably the prettiest village in Snowdonia. It’s famous for the legend of Gelert the hound (bring tissues for the kids if you tell them the story), but it’s also a hub for great food.
- Prince Llewelyn Hotel: A classic spot for a family Sunday roast or a mid-week feast. They have plenty of space and a menu that keeps both picky toddlers and hungry hikers happy.
- Glaslyn Ice Cream: You cannot visit Beddgelert without getting a cone. Even in the rain. It’s a local law.

5. Coastal Castles and Beachside Bites (40 Mins Drive)
Sometimes you need a break from the peaks and a bit of sea air.
- Harlech Castle (LL46 2YH): A massive fortress perched on a rock. After exploring the battlements, head down to the beach: one of the best in North Wales.
- The Golden Fleece Inn, Tremadog (LL49 9RB): This is one of my personal favourites. It’s got a fantastic atmosphere, a hidden "cellar bar," and the food is consistently brilliant. It’s a great spot for a more substantial "family feast" if you’ve spent the day at the coast.
6. The "Secret" Sunset Pub: Cwellyn Arms (45 Mins Drive)
If you’re coming back from a day hiking near Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa), make sure you stop at the Cwellyn Arms in Rhyd Ddu (LL54 6TL). It’s widely regarded on Reddit and by local guides as one of the best pubs in the park.
- Why we love it: They have a massive selection of real ales, log fires for the chilly evenings, and it’s incredibly dog-friendly. Sitting outside with a pint while watching the light fade over the mountains is the definition of "the good life."
Why Stay at Rhiw Goch Inn?
I might be biased, but I think we have the best seat in the house. When you stay with us, you’re not just getting a bed; you’re getting the full Snowdonia experience.
- Direct Access: We are perfectly positioned for everything mentioned above.
- The Views: Our campsite offers panoramic views of the Rhinogydd mountains.
- The History: You’re staying on a site that dates back to the 12th century. There’s a soul to this place that you just don't find in modern hotels.

We are working hard to bring the Inn back to its former glory, and every booking helps us restore this piece of Welsh history. Whether you’re looking for a luxury stay in the Lodge House or a simple tent pitch under the stars, we’d love to have you.
So, pack your hiking boots, bring your appetite, and come see why we think this corner of North Wales is the greatest place on earth.
