I’ve been living and working here at the Rhiw Goch Inn long enough to know that the only thing better than a Snowdonia sunset is a Snowdonia sunset with a cold pint in one hand and a plate of something hearty in the other.
We’re seeing a massive trend this summer, the "Coolcation." Apparently, people are finally catching on that roasting on a beach in 40-degree heat isn't all it's cracked up to be. Instead, they're heading to the fresh, mountain air of North Wales to enjoy the "cool" side of life. And let me tell you, Trawsfynydd and Bronaber are the absolute epicentre of this movement.
When you’re staying with us, whether you’ve bagged a spot in The Lodge House, tucked yourself away in The Hideaway, or you’re pitched up on our campsite, you’re going to get hungry. And while we’re busy restoring our 16th-century Inn back to its former tavern glory, I’ve done the "hard work" of testing every local pub within a 20-mile radius.

1. The Grapes Hotel, Maentwrog
Distance from Rhiw Goch Inn: 10 minutes (approx. 5 miles)

If you want history, atmosphere, and a "proper" Welsh pub feel, The Grapes is your first port of call. It’s one of the oldest coaching inns in Wales, and you can practically feel the centuries of stories in the floorboards.
- Why I love it: It’s got that quintessential Grade II listed charm. After a day of exploring the waterfalls at Ceunant Llennyrch, sitting in their beer garden overlooking the Vale of Ffestiniog is pure magic.
- The Grub: They do a fantastic steak and ale pie that hits the spot when the mountain air starts to get chilly.
- The Vibe: Relaxed, historic, and very welcoming to hikers with mud on their boots.
2. The Cross Foxes, Trawsfynydd
Distance from Rhiw Goch Inn: 5 minutes (approx. 2 miles)

Located just down the road from us in the heart of Trawsfynydd village, The Cross Foxes is a local staple. It’s right by the lake, making it the perfect spot if you’ve spent the afternoon fishing or walking the Trawsfynydd Lake loop.
- Why I love it: It’s as local as it gets. You’ll find me here occasionally chatting about the local news or the latest restoration updates on our own Inn.
- The Grub: Great for families. Their Sunday roast is a legendary way to refuel after a weekend of camping in the national park.
- The Vibe: Friendly, unpretentious, and community-focused.
3. The Bryn Arms, Gellilydan
Distance from Rhiw Goch Inn: 7 minutes (approx. 3.5 miles)
Address: Gellilydan, Blaenau Ffestiniog LL41 4EN
Just a short hop from Bronaber, The Bryn Arms is consistently rated as one of the best dining pubs in the area. It’s a great shout if you want something a little more "gastro" without losing the pub soul.
- Why I love it: They take their food seriously here. It’s the kind of place where you plan your entire afternoon around the reservation.
- The Grub: Keep an eye on their specials board, they often feature local Welsh lamb that is, quite frankly, world-class.
- The Vibe: A bit more refined, but still very much a country pub where dogs and hikers are part of the scenery.
4. The Golden Fleece Inn, Tremadog

Address: Market Square, Tremadog, Porthmadog LL49 9RB
Alright, this is a slightly longer drive, but Tremadog is a stunning little village built by the same guy who founded Porthmadog. The Golden Fleece is a bit of an institution.
- Why I love it: The cellar bar is incredibly atmospheric, it feels like you’re drinking in a cave (in a good way!). Plus, Tremadog is a great starting point for many coastal walks.
- The Grub: Their menu is huge, catering to everyone from the "burger and chips" crowd to those looking for fresh local seafood.
- The Vibe: Lively, bustling, and great for a Saturday night out.
5. Plas Weunydd (The Bar & Grill), Blaenau Ffestiniog

If you’ve spent your day at Zip World or exploring the slate caverns, Plas Weunydd is the place to be. It’s modern, stylish, and pays homage to the industrial heritage of the "town that roofed the world."
- Why I love it: The terrace views over the slate landscape are unlike anything else in the world. It’s "industrial-chic" meets "mountain-wilderness."
- The Grub: Excellent pizzas and local craft ales. It’s a bit more "coolcation" trendy than the traditional inns.
- The Vibe: Energetic and modern. Perfect for younger groups or families who’ve just finished a high-adrenaline activity.
