Listen, I’ve spent more hours than I care to admit staring at the horizon here in Bronaber, and let me tell you, the Welsh sky doesn't just "set" the sun; it puts on a full-blown theatrical performance. If you’re staying with us at the Rhiw Goch Inn or just passing through Trawsfynydd on the A470, you’re perfectly positioned for what I like to call "Sundowner Hour."
Whether you’ve just hauled yourself up Snowdon (fine, Yr Wyddfa if we’re being proper) or spent the day mountain biking the trails at Coed y Brenin Forest Park, you need three things: a cold drink, some decent grub, and a view that makes you forget your legs are made of jelly.
As someone who lives and breathes this corner of Snowdonia, I’ve put together my personal hit list of the best spots to soak up the evening vibes within an hour’s drive of our front gate at LL41 4UY.
1. The Rhiw Goch Inn (Our Very Own Legend)
Address: Bronaber, Trawsfynydd, Blaenau Ffestiniog LL41 4UY
Best for: The ultimate "on-your-doorstep" sunset.
I might be biased, but you honestly can’t beat the view right here. While I’m currently elbow-deep in the restoration of our 16th-century Grade 2 listed Inn (the tavern and games room are going to be crackers when they’re finished!), the grounds are still the best place in the world to sit with a local cider. If you’re staying in The Lodge House or The Hideaway Bed, just grab a chair, head outside, and watch the sun dip behind the Rhinogydd mountains. It’s quiet, it’s grand, and it’s the reason I fell in love with this place.
2. The Cross Foxes, Trawsfynydd

Distance: 5 minutes from Rhiw Goch Inn.
Best for: A proper local Welsh pub vibe.
Just down the road in Trawsfynydd village, The Cross Foxes is a solid, no-nonsense choice. It’s right near the lake (Llyn Trawsfynydd), making it the perfect pitstop after a late afternoon stroll across the bridge. It’s a "proper" local: expect a warm welcome, families having dinner, and a great selection of Welsh ales. It’s the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think, which is a rare luxury these days.
3. The Grapes Hotel, Maentwrog
Address: Maentwrog, Blaenau Ffestiniog LL41 4EB
Distance: 12 minutes from Rhiw Goch Inn.
Best for: History and a cracking terrace.
This 17th-century coaching inn is a beauty. It’s got a massive terrace that’s perfect for summer evenings. Maentwrog is tucked into the Vale of Ffestiniog, and the atmosphere at The Grapes is always buzzing. The food is top-notch: think proper pub classics done right. It’s a great shout if you want to feel a bit of that old-world Welsh charm.
4. The Bryn Arms, Gellilydan
Address: Gellilydan, Blaenau Ffestiniog LL41 4EN
Distance: 8 minutes from Rhiw Goch Inn.
Best for: Family-friendly food.
If the kids are starting to get "hangry" after a day at Zip World, head to The Bryn Arms. It’s literally minutes from us in Bronaber. They’ve got a solid reputation for food and plenty of space for the family to relax. It’s one of those reliable spots where you know you’re going to get a good meal and a friendly smile.
5. Zip World Llechwedd (Evening Adventure)
Address: Blaenau Ffestiniog LL41 3NB
Distance: 15 minutes from Rhiw Goch Inn.
Best for: Adrenaline and post-action pizza.
Who says sundowners have to be sedentary? If you’re here in July, keep an eye out for evening events. Even if you aren't flying down a zip wire, the atmosphere at Llechwedd in the early evening is electric. They often have food pop-ups or their own on-site cafe/bar area. Plus, the view of the slate caverns as the light fades is eerie and spectacular all at once.
6. The Ship, Dolgellau
Address: Lombard St, Dolgellau LL40 1SB
Distance: 15 minutes from Rhiw Goch Inn.
Best for: Boutique vibes and people watching.
Head south on the A470 to Dolgellau. It’s a gorgeous market town with narrow streets and dark stone buildings. The Ship is a bit more "boutique" than your average local, making it a great spot for a slightly more sophisticated evening. If you’re lucky enough to be here during the Fawr Dolgellau festival (July 16–19, 2026), the whole town comes alive with music.
7. Cross Foxes, Dolgellau (The one at the foot of Cader Idris)
Address: Brithdir, Dolgellau LL40 2SG
Distance: 20 minutes from Rhiw Goch Inn.
Best for: High-end dining after a hike.
Not to be confused with the one in Trawsfynydd! This Cross Foxes is located at the junction of the A470 and A487. It’s a bit more upscale and perfect if you want to treat yourselves. It sits right at the base of Cader Idris, so if you’ve just come down off the mountain, it’s the first place you’ll want to crash for a luxury burger and a glass of wine.
8. Barmouth Beach (The Seaside Sundowner)
Postcode: LL42 1NE
Distance: 35 minutes from Rhiw Goch Inn.
Best for: Fish and chips on the sand.
There is nothing: and I mean nothing: quite like a Barmouth sunset. You drive down through the Mawddach Estuary (which is stunning in its own right), grab some chips, and sit on the beach. Watching the sun sink into the Irish Sea is a rite of passage for anyone on a holiday in North Wales. It’s about a 35-minute drive from our holiday accommodation, but it’s worth every mile.
9. The Oakley Arms, Maentwrog
Address: Tan-y-Bwlch, Maentwrog, Blaenau Ffestiniog LL41 3YU
Distance: 15 minutes from Rhiw Goch Inn.
Best for: Garden views.
Another Maentwrog gem. The Oakley Arms has a massive tiered garden that overlooks the valley. If you’re a fan of the Ffestiniog Railway, you might even see (and definitely hear) the steam trains puffing through the trees in the distance. It’s a very "Welsh summer" experience.
10. Llyn Trawsfynydd (The Lakeside Walk)

Distance: 5 minutes from Rhiw Goch Inn.
Best for: Peace, quiet, and reflection.
Sometimes the best sundowner isn't at a pub at all. Take a flask of tea (or something stronger) and head to the lake. The Trawsfynydd footbridge offers a 360-degree view of the mountains. In July, the water is often glass-calm in the evening. It’s the perfect place to reflect on your day before heading back to your camping pitch or apartment at Rhiw Goch.

July is a massive month for us in Snowdonia. If you’re coming for the International Snowdon Race (likely around July 18th) or the Snowdonia Trail Marathon earlier in the month, things get busy! My advice? Book your table early if you’re heading to the popular spots like The Grapes or Cross Foxes.
