If you’re anything like me, by the time July rolls around, you’ve probably spent a good few hours staring at a map of North Wales wondering where the heck to take the family that hasn’t been "done to death" already. I get it. We’ve all done the Llandudno pier walk a thousand times (though the ice cream is still top-tier, let’s be honest).
But here’s the thing, right in the middle of Snowdonia, tucked away near Bronaber, is a place that people often drive past on the A470 without realizing they’re missing out on the crown jewel of the region. I’m talking about Trawsfynydd.
Since we took over the Rhiw Goch Inn, I’ve spent my evenings watching the sun dip behind the Rhinogydd mountains with a cold drink in hand, and I’ve realized that this place is the ultimate base for a summer adventure. Whether you’re staying in one of our luxury self-catering apartments like The Lodge House or pitching a tent on our campsite, you are smack-bang in the middle of everything.
So, if you’re struggling for summer ideas, here are 10 things you absolutely need to know about Trawsfynydd and the surrounding area this year.
1. The Lake Isn't Just for Looking At
Llyn Trawsfynydd (Postcode: LL41 4YE) is literally on our doorstep. It’s one of the largest reservoirs in Wales, but it feels more like a hidden alpine lake. For 2026, the lakeside paths have never looked better. You can walk the full 8-mile loop if you’re feeling ambitious, or just head to the Trawsfynydd Lake Stop café for a brew and a slice of cake while the kids try to spot the local ospreys.
If you’re into fishing, this is your mecca. It’s world-renowned for its trout fishing. I’ve spent many a quiet morning there failing to catch anything while enjoying the absolute silence. It’s good for the soul, even if the fish are smarter than me.
2. Coed y Brenin: My Personal Happy Place
Just a ten-minute drive down the road (Postcode: LL40 2HZ) is Coed y Brenin Forest Park. If you’ve never been mountain biking here, have you even lived? It was the UK’s first dedicated mountain bike centre, and it still reigns supreme.
I try to get out on the "MinorTaur" trail at least once a week, it’s great for families. But if you’re a bit of a nutcase like some of our guests, the "Beast of Brenin" will give your legs a workout you won’t forget. Not into biking? The walking trails through the ancient woodlands are stunning. It’s the perfect way to tire the kids out before heading back to the Inn for a BBQ.
3. Pub Grub at The Grapes Hotel
While we’re hard at work restoring the 16th-century tavern at Rhiw Goch Inn (it’s coming along, I promise!), you’ll want to know where to get a solid meal. My top recommendation nearby is The Grapes Hotel in Maentwrog (LL41 4HN).
It’s a historic coaching inn with a fantastic garden. There’s nothing better than a Sunday roast there after a long hike. It’s about a 15-minute drive from us, and the atmosphere is exactly what you want from a Welsh pub, roaring fires (even in July sometimes, because, well, Wales) and plenty of local character.
4. High-Altitude Thrills at Zip World Llechwedd
If you want to hear your teenagers scream (with joy, hopefully), take them to Zip World Llechwedd in Blaenau Ffestiniog (LL41 3NB). It’s about 20 minutes north of us. You’ve got the Titan 2 zip line, which is absolute madness, and the Deep Mine tour if you want to learn about the slate heritage that built this part of the world.
Pro tip: Book the "Bounce Below" sessions early. Jumping around in a giant underground slate cavern on trampolines is one of those things you have to do once in your life. It’s bizarre, slightly terrifying, and brilliant.
5. Steaming Through the Mountains
For something a bit more relaxed, the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railway (LL41 3HE) is a must. You can hop on the steam train at Blaenau Ffestiniog and wind your way down to the coast at Porthmadog.
The views you get from those carriages are inaccessible by car. It’s like stepping back in time. I always tell our guests to take the morning train, have lunch in Porthmadog, and catch the late afternoon one back. It’s a proper holiday North Wales experience.
6. The Italian Job: Portmeirion Village
You wouldn’t expect to find a Mediterranean-style village in the middle of the Welsh mountains, but Clough Williams-Ellis was a bit of a visionary. Portmeirion (LL48 6ER) is about a 25-minute drive from Bronaber.
It’s surreal, colorful, and looks incredible in the summer sun. Even if you aren't a fan of 'The Prisoner', the gardens and the estuary walks are top-notch. It’s a great spot for those Instagram photos that make everyone back home jealous of your Snowdonia trip.
7. Luxury in the Wild: The Lodge House
I have to talk about our own little slice of heaven. The Lodge House at Rhiw Goch Inn is finally in its full glory this summer. We’ve gone all out on the renovation. I’m talking underfloor heating (essential for those cool Welsh nights), a king-size bed that you’ll never want to leave, and a luxury cast iron bath that’s big enough to swim in.
It’s perfect for families or couples who want the rugged beauty of the national park but don't want to compromise on a bit of pampering. We’ve kept the 16th-century soul of the place: exposed stone walls and thick beams: but added the 21st-century comforts.
8. Sunset Sessions on the Campsite
If you’re more of a "sleeping under the stars" person, our campsite at Rhiw Goch Inn is the spot. We’ve only got five electric pitches (plus plenty of space for tents), so it never feels crowded.
The best thing about being in Trawsfynydd in July is the sunsets. Because we’re elevated, you get an unobstructed view as the sun drops behind the Rhinogydd mountains. I’ve seen some of the best skies of my life right from the campsite gate. Grab a fire pit, get some marshmallows on the go, and just watch the light change. It beats Netflix any day of the week.
9. The Snowdonia Trail Marathon (July 11-12, 2026)
If you’re visiting us mid-July, the energy in the area is electric. The Snowdonia Trail Marathon Eryri is happening over in Llanberis. While that’s about a 45-minute drive from us, many runners prefer staying here at the Inn because it’s quieter and easier to relax after a brutal 26 miles over the mountains.
Even if you aren't running (and I certainly won't be: I'll be the one cheering from the sidelines with a pint), it’s a great weekend to be in the area. There’s a real buzz in the local pubs and cafes.
10. Hiking the Rhinogydd: The Quiet Mountains
Everyone flocks to Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), which is great, don't get me wrong. But if you want to experience the real wild Wales, the Rhinogydd range starts right behind Bronaber.
These mountains are rugged, ancient, and often completely empty. You can walk for hours without seeing another person. It’s proper "off the beaten track" stuff. Just make sure you’ve got a good map and some sturdy boots: the terrain is a bit more unforgiving than the main tourist paths, but the reward is total tranquility.
