It’s Thursday, the 9th of July, and looking out the window here at Bronaber, the mist is just starting to lift off the Trawsfynydd hills. If you’re anything like me, your morning starts with a strong coffee and a quick scroll through the latest Snowdonia chatter on Reddit. Lately, the "Camping in Wales" and "Snowdonia" subreddits have been blowing up with the same three questions: Where can I wild camp? Are the midges going to eat me alive? And how on earth do I actually get a parking spot for Snowdon?
Well, put your phone down for five minutes. I’ve been living and breathing this renovation at the Rhiw Goch Inn for a while now, and I’ve seen every mistake a summer camper can make. If you want a Snowdon holiday that doesn’t involve getting a ticket from a park warden or waking up in a bog, this is your definitive 5-minute morning brief.
1. The Reddit "Wild Camping" Myth vs. Reality
I see it every day: "Can I just pitch my tent on the side of the road near Snowdon?"
The short answer? No. The long answer? Still no, and you’ll probably get a knock on your tent flap at 3:00 AM.
Snowdonia (Eryri) National Park is stunning, but it’s not the Wild West. Wild camping without landowner permission is technically illegal across most of Wales. More importantly, the "Instagram spots" you see are often overused and, frankly, a bit of a mess.

- Location, Location, Location: Stay out of the deep, boggy valleys. Our spot at LL41 4UY sits a bit higher up, which usually catches a breeze off the coast. Midges hate a breeze.
- Smidge is your friend: Don’t bother with the fancy scented candles. Get the high-strength stuff.
- The Sunset Window: They are worst at dawn and dusk. That’s why we built the Lodge House with underfloor heating and big windows: sometimes you just want to watch the sunset from behind glass with a local ale in hand.
3. The "Snowdon Holiday" Logistics: Don't Follow the Crowd
If you’re planning a Snowdon holiday this week, listen to me: Do not drive to Pen-y-Pass at 10:00 AM. You won’t find a spot, and the traffic on the A470 can get "interesting" in mid-July.
The best way to do it? Stay with us in Bronaber. We are perfectly positioned on the A470 for easy access, but we’re far enough away from the "honeypot" areas that you aren't fighting for air.
- Pro Tip: Take the Sherpa’r Wyddfa bus. It’s cheap, eco-friendly, and saves you the £20 parking fee.
- Alternative: Skip Snowdon for a day and head to Coed y Brenin Forest Park for mountain biking. It’s right on our doorstep, and the trails are world-class.
4. When the Tent Isn't Enough: The Lodge & The Hideaway

- Crowds: High. If you’re hitting the trails, leave by 7:00 AM.
- Vibe: Electric. There’s nothing like Holiday Wales in the summer. The mountains are green, the lakes are (almost) warm enough for a dip, and the history here at Rhiw Goch Inn is practically vibrating out of the stone walls.
