There’s a specific feeling you get when you wake up in a tent at Rhiw Goch Inn. It’s not just the crisp Snowdonia air, though that’ll wake you up faster than a double espresso, it’s the silence, followed by that first view of the Rhinogydd mountains as the sun starts to burn through the morning mist.
We’re right in the heart of things here in Bronaber, near Trawsfynydd (LL41 4UY). Whether you’re a seasoned pro with a high-tech campervan or someone who’s just discovered that their "waterproof" tent is actually more of a sieve, summer camping in North Wales is a bucket-list experience. But why specifically here? Why does Rhiw Goch Inn win every time?
Let me walk you through it, from the trails that’ll melt your brake pads to the best local pints for your post-hike recovery.
The Setup: Your Basecamp at LL41 4UY
First off, let’s talk shop. Our campsite isn't one of those massive, soulless holiday parks where you’re packed in like sardines. We’ve kept it authentic. We have five electric pitches for those who like their gadgets (and their heated blankets, no judgement here), plus plenty of space for traditional tent camping.
When we took over the Rhiw Goch Inn, we knew the campsite had to be special. You’re staying on grounds that date back to the 12th century. While I’m busy renovating the Grade 2 listed 16th-century tavern (fire damage is a real pain, let me tell you), the campsite remains the soul of the property. You get direct access to some of the best walks in the country without even needing to start your car.
Plus, we’re positioned right on the A470. That means you get the tranquility of the mountains with the convenience of a road that connects you to everything North Wales has to offer.
1. The "Mountain Bike Mecca": Coed y Brenin Forest Park
If you’ve brought your bike, you’re about to have the time of your life. Coed y Brenin Forest Park (Dolgellau, LL40 2HZ) is literally just down the road, about a 10-minute drive or a very scenic ride from Bronaber.
I’ve spent many an afternoon (and a fair few bruises) on these trails. It’s got everything:
- The MinorTaur: Perfect for families. It’s a modular loop, so you can do as little as 3km or as much as 13km. It’s built to be accessible, so even the kids can get involved.
- Yr Afon: A lovely 11km easy forest track that follows the river. Perfect if you want the views without the "I might die" technicality of the harder trails.
- The Beast: For the adrenaline junkies. It’s 38km of technical climbs and descents that will leave your legs screaming and your heart happy.
2. Lake Days and Sunset Sundowners at Trawsfynydd
Just a stone's throw from the Inn is Llyn Trawsfynydd. In July, the lake is the place to be. The Trawsfynydd footbridge is a personal favourite of mine for an evening stroll. If you’re looking for "Campsite Goals" for your Instagram, this is where you get the 360° mountain views.
The lake is also great for fishing or just a gentle walk. There’s something about the way the light hits the water here in the summer, it’s why people keep coming back to holiday in North Wales.
3. Local Pubs and Grub: The Peter Dive Approved List
Look, as much as I love a campfire marshmallow, sometimes you just need someone else to do the cooking and a cold pint that hasn't been sitting in a lukewarm coolbox.
While we’re working hard on restoring the tavern here at Rhiw Goch Inn to its former glory, here are my top picks within a short drive:
- The Bryn Arms (Gellilydan, LL41 4EN): Just up the A470. It’s a classic, friendly spot with solid pub food. Perfect for a quick bite after a day at the lake.
- The Cross Foxes (Brithdir, Dolgellau LL40 2SG): A bit more upmarket but still very welcoming. The food here is excellent. It’s about a 20-minute drive, right at the junction of the A470 and A487.
- Tŷ Mawr (Maentwrog, LL41 3YD): This is a stunning 16th-century inn. Sitting in their beer garden overlooking the Vale of Ffestiniog with a local ale? That’s what summer is all about.
4. Family Adventures: Zip World and Beyond
If the kids are starting to get restless, you’re in the perfect spot to tire them out. Zip World Llechwedd (Blaenau Ffestiniog, LL41 3NB) is only about 15 minutes away. Whether you want to fly over a slate quarry on a zip line or bounce on underground trampolines in a cavern, it’s a world-class attraction right on our doorstep.
For something a bit more mellow, Gypsy Wood Family Park (Bontnewydd, LL54 7YJ) is about 45 minutes away and is a hit with younger children.
Addressing the "Reddit" Questions: Peter’s Honest Answers
I see a lot of the same questions popping up online about camping in Snowdonia. Since I live and breathe this place, let me give you the straight talk:
- "Is wild camping legal?"
Technically, no. In Wales, you need landowner permission. That’s why a site like ours is your best bet. You get the "wild" feel with the benefit of a legal pitch, a hot shower, and a place to charge your phone. Plus, you won't get a grumpy farmer knocking on your tent at 6 AM. - "What about the midges?"
Look, it’s Wales. If you’re near water in July, they might show up. My advice? Get a small fire going (off the ground, please!), use a bit of Smidge, and stay in the breeze. Our campsite is elevated enough that we usually get a nice breeze off the mountains that keeps the pesky things away. - "Will it rain?"
Yes. Probably. It’s Snowdonia! But that’s the beauty of it. The mist over the Rhinogydd is spectacular, and the pubs are even cozier when it’s drizzling outside. Just bring a decent jacket and you’ll be fine.
