There’s a specific moment every evening here at the Rhiw Goch Inn when the sun starts its slow dive behind the Rhinogydd mountains. The sky turns this ridiculous shade of bruised purple and fiery orange, and for a second, even the most hyperactive sheep in the field stops to have a look.
I’m Peter Dive, and if you haven’t met me yet, I’m the bloke usually covered in sawdust or slate dust, trying to bring our 16th-century Grade 2 listed inn back to its former glory. It’s a labor of love (and occasionally a labor of "why did I buy a building that hasn't been touched since the fire in 2018?"), but when I sit out on the terrace with a cold one, looking out over Snowdonia, I remember exactly why.
If you’re staying with us in The Lodge or hiding away in The Hideaway, you’ve already nailed the "base camp" part of your holiday in North Wales. But what do you do when the hiking boots come off and the "I’m hungry" chorus starts?
People on Reddit are always asking: "Where can I find a pub in Snowdonia that doesn't mind muddy boots and loud kids?" or "What's the best sunset spot that isn't the top of a mountain?" Well, pull up a chair. Here’s my personal guide to the best sunset pints and family-friendly adventures within an hour’s drive of our front door (LL41 4UY).
1. The "I Can’t Be Bothered to Drive" Pint: Tafarn y Traws
Address: A470, Trawsfynydd, LL41 4UP (3 mins from Rhiw Goch)
Let’s start local. Just down the road is the Trawsfynydd Inn, or Tafarn y Traws to the locals. It’s a proper, no-nonsense Welsh roadside inn. If you’ve spent the day wrestling with a mountain bike at Coed y Brenin, this is where you go to refuel.
- The Vibe: Casual, friendly, and very Welsh.
- For the Kids: Standard pub grub that actually fills them up.
- Peter’s Tip: It’s perfectly positioned for a quick pint after a stroll around Trawsfynydd Lake. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch the local choir practicing or some live music.
2. Adventure Central: Zip World Llechwedd & Bounce Below
Address: Blaenau Ffestiniog, LL41 3NB (~20 min drive)
You can’t come to this part of the world and ignore the slate. Blaenau Ffestiniog is only 20 minutes away, and it’s transformed from a mining town into the adventure capital of Europe.

If you’ve got kids with more energy than a pack of border collies, take them to Bounce Below. It’s basically a massive underground cave filled with giant trampolines and neon lights. It’s surreal, slightly terrifying, and brilliant fun.
- Local News: For May 2026, they’ve just announced new "Deep Mine" evening tours which are a bit more atmospheric and less crowded.
- Peter’s Tip: Wear long sleeves. Those nets can give you a nasty friction burn if you’re as uncoordinated as I am.
3. The Best Riverside Pint: The Grapes Hotel
Address: Maentwrog, Blaenau Ffestiniog, LL41 3HY (~12 min drive)
If you want a pub that looks like it’s been plucked straight out of a storybook, head to Maentwrog. The Grapes is a 17th-century coaching inn that sits right in the Vale of Ffestiniog.
- The Vibe: Historically posh but welcoming. Great outdoor seating area.
- For the Kids: Plenty of space outside and a menu that goes beyond just nuggets and chips.
- Peter’s Tip: This is my "treat" spot. After a long week of renovation work on the Inn, a pint of local ale here feels like a reward. It’s also right near the Ffestiniog Railway line, so you might hear the whistle of a steam train in the distance.
4. Mountain Biking & Forest Play: Coed y Brenin
Address: Ganllwyd, Dolgellau, LL40 2HZ (~15 min drive south)
I might be biased, but Coed y Brenin is one of the best things about living here. It’s the UK’s first dedicated mountain bike center, and it’s literally 15 minutes down the A470 from our campsite.
- Activities: They have world-class trails, but also "The Animal Puzzle Trail" for younger kids and great walking routes for those who prefer two legs to two wheels.
- The Café: Excellent cakes. Seriously.
- Peter’s Tip: If you're staying at our campsite, you can be on the trails by 9:00 AM and back for a BBQ by 2:00 PM before the afternoon crowds arrive.
5. Sunset & Sand: Harlech Castle & Beach
Address: Harlech, LL46 2YH (~25 min drive)
Harlech is iconic. You’ve got the UNESCO World Heritage castle perched on the cliff and one of the best beaches in North Wales below it.
- The Activity: Explore the castle walls (kids love the "defending the gate" roleplay) and then head down to the dunes.
- Dinner Spot: The Castle Cottage is great, or just grab fish and chips and eat them on the beach while the sun sets over the Irish Sea.
- Peter’s Tip: Watch out for the seagulls in Harlech. They are tactical geniuses and will steal your chips before you’ve even put vinegar on them.
Why Stay with Us?
When I’m not exploring the local pubs or "testing" the mountain bike trails, I’m working hard on the restoration of the Rhiw Goch Inn. We’re currently transforming this 16th-century gem back into a bustling tavern with a games room and more apartments.
Until the main bar is fully open, our self-catering holiday homes and campsite offer the best way to experience Snowdonia.
- The Lodge House: Perfect for families. It’s got underfloor heating (a godsend in the Welsh mountains), a luxury cast iron bath, and enough room for the whole gang.
- The Hideaway: For when you want to escape the world. It’s got a modern king-size bed, a stylish kitchenette, and those mountain views I keep banging on about.
- The Campsite: Five electric pitches for the "pro" campers and plenty of grass for those who like to keep it traditional.
Peter’s "Evening Survival" Checklist
- Book Ahead: Especially in May/June. North Wales is popular, and the best pubs fill up fast.
- Layer Up: Even in May, when the sun goes down in Snowdonia, it gets chilly.
- Download Maps: Signal can be… "characterful" in the valleys. Save your Google Maps offline.
- Check the Train Times: If you're planning to take the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railway, check their special event calendar for May 2026.
