Alright, pull up a chair and let me tell you something, there is nothing quite like a North Wales summer. It’s Thursday, the 2nd of July 2026, and as I’m sitting here looking out over the Rhinogydd mountains from our patch here at Rhiw Goch Inn, I’ve got a cold one in my hand and the smell of fresh mountain air in my lungs. The sheep are being particularly vocal today (standard Bronaber choir practice), and the sun is just starting that long, slow dip towards the coast.
If you’ve managed to snag a booking with us for your holiday North Wales, you’re already winning at life. But I know what it’s like when you’ve got a carload of kids and a partner who’s "hangry" after a day of hiking, you need a plan. You need to know where the good grub is and where you can burn off that pint-sized energy without driving for three hours.
I’ve spent plenty of time scouting out the best spots near us here in Trawsfynydd. So, from one dad to another (and from someone who knows the A470 like the back of his hand), here are my top 10 family-friendly picks for food and fun within an hour of LL41 4UY.
1. Rhiw Goch Inn (Right here in Bronaber!)

I might be biased, but why go far? We’ve got the massive outdoor space where kids can run wild while you enjoy the sunset views that people literally pay thousands for on postcards. We’re currently in the thick of our massive renovation project, restoring the 16th-century Grade 2 listed inn back to its former glory. But while the main tavern is a work in progress, our Lodge House and The Hideaway are buzzing.
If you’re staying in the Lodge House, you’ve got that luxury cast iron bath to soak in after a long walk, and underfloor heating for when the mountain air gets a bit nippy. Plus, our campsite has those five electric pitches that are always the first to go. It’s the perfect home base for your Snowdonia adventures.
2. Coed y Brenin Forest Park
Address: Ganllwyd, Dolgellau LL40 2HZ (15 mins away)
If your kids have more energy than a pack of border collies, take them to Coed y Brenin. It’s the UK’s first dedicated mountain bike centre, and it’s just down the road from us. They’ve got trails for everyone, from the "MinorTaur" (great for the little ones) to the "Beast" (not for the faint of heart). The visitor centre has a cracking café for a post-ride burger. I usually go for the coffee while watching people much braver than me fly down the hills.
3. The Cross Foxes, Trawsfynydd

Our local village pub. It’s a proper, friendly spot where they actually know your name after the second visit. It’s just five minutes from Bronaber. They do solid pub grub, think hearty pies and fish and chips that hit the spot after a day at the lake. It’s very family-oriented, so don't worry if the kids are a bit loud; they’ve seen it all before.
4. Zip World Llechwedd (Slate Caverns)
Address: Blaenau Ffestiniog LL41 3NB (20 mins away)
You haven't lived until you’ve been 500 feet underground in a Victorian slate mine. Blaenau Ffestiniog is just up the A470. The Deep Mine Tour is brilliant for the kids (and educational, but don’t tell them that). If you’ve got teenagers who want to scare themselves silly, the Titan 2 zip line and the Bounce Below underground trampolines are world-class. It’s a bit of a surreal experience, jumping around in a neon-lit cavern.
5. The Golden Fleece Inn, Tremadog
Address: 12-14 Market Square, Tremadog, Porthmadog LL49 9RB (25 mins away)
If you want a meal that feels a bit special but doesn’t mind if a toddler drops a spoon, this is the place. Their children’s menu is actually real food, not just frozen nuggets. The building itself is historic and full of character. It’s a great stop-off if you’re heading back from the coast toward Rhiw Goch Inn.
6. Harlech Castle & Beach
Address: Harlech LL46 2YH (30 mins away)
Harlech Castle is a beast of a fortress sitting on a cliff. In July, they often have events, and walking the ramparts is a must. Once you’ve done the history bit, head down to the beach. It’s one of the best in Wales, huge, sandy, and perfect for the kids to tire themselves out. I’ve spent many an afternoon here failing to build a decent sandcastle while the kids look on in pity.
7. Portmeirion Village
Address: Minffordd, Penrhyndeudraeth LL48 6ER (25 mins away)
It’s like someone took a slice of Italy and dropped it into North Wales. Portmeirion is a "fantasy village" with candy-coloured buildings, secret tunnels, and beautiful woodland walks. There are plenty of spots to grab an ice cream or a proper lunch. It’s magical for kids because it feels like a movie set. Fun fact: it was the setting for the 60s show The Prisoner, but don't worry, they’ll let you leave at the end of the day.
8. Bala Lake Railway & The Eagle Inn
Address: Llanuwchllyn, Bala LL23 7TW (25 mins away)
Bala Lake (Llyn Tegid) is stunning, and the narrow-gauge steam train that runs along its shore is a winner for families. After the train ride, pop into The Eagle Inn (Yr Eryr) in Llanuwchllyn. It’s a traditional "time capsule" pub. It’s quiet, authentic, and serves great local food. It feels like stepping back into a simpler time, which is exactly what a holiday North Wales is all about.
9. Ty Coch Inn, Porthdinllaen
Address: Porthdinllaen, Morfa Nefyn, Pwllheli LL53 6DB (55 mins away)
Okay, this is just under an hour away, but it’s consistently voted one of the best beach pubs in the world. You have to walk across the sand to get to it. You can sit with a pint while the kids play in the waves right in front of you. It’s the ultimate summer vibe. Just keep an eye on the tide!
10. GreenWood Family Park
Address: Y Felinheli LL56 4QN (50 mins away)
Voted the best family attraction in North Wales multiple times. It’s a "green" adventure park, meaning lots of eco-friendly rides, like the world’s only people-powered rollercoaster. It’s set in the woods and is perfect for a full day out before heading back to the peace and quiet of Bronaber.

Being based at Rhiw Goch Inn means you’re central to everything. We’re right on the A470, which is basically the artery of Snowdonia. You can head north to the high peaks or south towards the coast in no time.
Speaking of the high peaks, keep an eye out for the Snowdonia Trail Marathon happening this month! The atmosphere in the local towns is electric when the runners are through. Even if you aren't running 26 miles over mountains (and honestly, who could blame you?), it’s a great time to be in the area.

- Book Ahead: July is peak season. If you want a table at the Fleece or a spot on the Bala Railway, get it sorted early.
- Layer Up: The weather in Snowdonia changes faster than a toddler's mood. Even in July, bring a raincoat.
- Support Local: Buy your bits and pieces from the local shops in Trawsfynydd. It keeps the heart of the community beating.
- Watch the Sunset: Seriously. Grab a chair, sit outside the Lodge, and just watch the sky turn pink over the Rhinogydd. It's better than anything on Netflix.
