Alright, let’s talk straight. It’s the 5th of July, the sun is actually doing its job over Snowdonia for once, and I’ve spent the morning watching the mist burn off the Rhinogydd mountains from the front of the Inn.
Every year, I see the same look on people's faces as they pull into our gravel drive here in Bronaber. It’s that half-excited, half-terrified expression of someone who has either just realised they forgot the tent poles or someone who’s wondering if their "luxury lodge" is actually just a shed with a fancy rug.
I spend a lot of time lurking on Reddit and travel forums (usually while waiting for plaster to dry in the old Inn renovation), and the question is always the same: "Should I camp in Snowdonia or get a holiday let?"
Look, I run the Rhiw Goch Inn. I’ve got the best of both worlds here, luxury holiday apartments and a cracking campsite. So, here is my completely biased (but very honest) guide to choosing your base for a proper Snowdon holiday.
The "I Want to Feel Like a Human" Option: The Snowdonia Lodge
If you’ve spent any time on the r/Snowdonia subreddit, you’ll know the biggest complaint is the weather. Even in July, North Wales can decide it wants to be a car wash for three days straight.
This is where staying in something like our Lodge House or The Hideaway wins every single time.
Why go for a Lodge/Apartment?
- The "Drying Room" Factor: If you’ve spent six hours hiking up Snowdon or mountain biking through Coed y Brenin Forest Park (which is just a stone's throw from us), you’re going to be damp. In a lodge, you have underfloor heating. In a tent, you have… hope.
- The Bath: I’m particularly proud of the luxury cast iron bath in the Lodge House. There is nothing, and I mean nothing, better than soaking your legs in a tub that’s big enough to float a small boat in after a day on the hills.
- Actual Beds: Our Lodge House has a king-size bed that doesn't require an air pump. If you’re here for a romantic Holiday Wales experience, trust me, your partner will thank you for the lack of "morning back-ache."
The "Nature is My Living Room" Option: Camping at Rhiw Goch Inn
Now, don't get me wrong. I love a tent. There’s a specific kind of magic to waking up in Trawsfynydd, unzipping the canvas, and seeing the sun hitting the peaks.
Our campsite here at Rhiw Goch Inn (LL41 4UY) isn't your average "field with a tap." We’ve got five electric gravel pitches (because nobody likes a muddy van) and plenty of space for tents.
Why choose the campsite?
- The Views: You are literally surrounded by the Rhinogydd mountains. At sunset, the sky turns a shade of pink that looks like a Photoshop filter gone wrong. It’s stunning.
- Direct Access: You can literally walk out of your tent and onto the trails. No driving, no parking fees, just you and the mountain.
- Community: There’s a vibe at the campsite that you don't get in a private apartment. It’s the sound of stoves clicking, the smell of morning coffee, and comparing notes with other hikers about which route up Snowdon is the least likely to kill your calves.

I’ve pulled some of the most common questions I see people asking about staying in this neck of the woods.
1. "Is the A470 noisy for camping?"
We’re positioned right on the A470, which is great for access, you can be in Dolgellau or Porthmadog in twenty minutes. Because of the way the land sits here in Bronaber, the site stays remarkably peaceful. You’re more likely to be woken up by a sheep with a grudge than a car.
2. "How far are you from the actual Snowdon walks?"
Close enough to be convenient, far enough to avoid the tourist circus. Most of the main paths are a short, scenic drive away. Plus, we’re the perfect base for the Coed y Brenin mountain bike trails.
3. "What’s the deal with the pub?"
Right now, I’m working hard on the renovation of the 16th-century Grade 2 listed Inn. It was gutted by fire in 2018, and I’m bringing it back to life as a proper tavern. While the main pub area is still a work in progress, the accommodation is top-tier. Think of it as staying in a piece of history that’s currently getting its makeover.

If you’re coming for a week and want to explore the whole of Snowdonia National Park, book a stay in The Lodge House. It gives you a stable home base where you can cook, relax, and actually dry your gear.
However, if you’re a "weekend warrior" looking for a quick hit of mountain air and want to save your pennies for the local ales, grab a pitch on our campsite.
