I’m Peter Dive, and after years of exploring every nook and cranny of this beautiful corner of the world, I’ve curated the ultimate list of "sundowner" spots. These are the places where I take my own family when we want that perfect trifecta: a cold pint, a decent pizza, and a place where the kids can burn off that last bit of steam before bed.
Whether you’re tucked up in The Lodge House or pitching a tent at our Snowdonia campsite, here are seven unmissable spots within an hour’s drive of LL41 4UY.
1. The Rhiw Goch "Backyard" – Bronaber & Trawsfynydd

I might be biased, but why leave when you have this? One of my favorite things to do is grab a local brew, set up a chair by the dry stone walls, and watch the sun dip behind the peaks. We’ve got plenty of space for the kids to run around safely within our grounds.
While we’re currently hard at work restoring the 16th-century Grade 2 listed Inn (trust me, the tavern is going to be legendary once it's finished!), our self-catering holiday apartments and campsite are the perfect base. If you're staying in The Hideaway, you can literally watch the sunset from your window with a glass of wine in hand. It’s quiet, it’s authentic, and it’s the definition of a "holiday in North Wales."
2. The Bryn Arms – Gellilydan

Address: Gellilydan, Blaenau Ffestiniog LL41 4EN
Just down the A470 from us in Bronaber is The Bryn Arms. This is my "local" when I want someone else to do the cooking. They are brilliantly family-friendly and often have a small play area that keeps the little ones occupied.
The vibe here is exactly what you want from a Welsh pub: unpretentious and welcoming. They’ve been known to fire up a pizza oven in the summer months, and their beer garden is a sun-trap. It’s the perfect spot to stop after a day of mountain biking at Coed y Brenin Forest Park.
3. The Oakley Arms – Maentwrog
Distance: 10 minutes
Address: Tan y Bwlch, Maentwrog, Blaenau Ffestiniog LL41 3YU
If you want a view of the Dwyryd estuary while you eat, the Oakley Arms is a must. It’s a grand old building with a massive terrace. They have a solid menu that usually features some great flatbreads or pizzas, and plenty of space for families.
The kids love watching the Ffestiniog Railway steam trains puff past in the distance. It’s one of those spots where you can feel the history of the area: much like the 12th-century roots of our own Rhiw Goch Inn.
4. Barmouth Beach & The Mawddach Estuary
Distance: 25 minutes
Postcode: LL42 1NE
You can’t talk about sundowners in North Wales without mentioning Barmouth. My tip? Park up near the harbor, grab a takeaway pizza from one of the local spots like The Pizza Island, and walk across the iconic Barmouth Bridge as the sun starts to set.
The views back towards the mountains (where we are!) are staggering. There’s a massive playground right on the seafront too, so you can let the kids go wild while you enjoy the sea breeze. It’s a classic Welsh holiday experience that never gets old.
5. The Grapes Hotel – Maentwrog
Distance: 10 minutes
Address: Maentwrog, Blaenau Ffestiniog LL41 4HY
This is one of the oldest inns in Wales, and it’s got character by the bucketload. The outdoor seating area is fantastic for a late-afternoon pint. While it’s more of a traditional pub-grub spot than a "pizza parlor," the atmosphere is unbeatable.
I love coming here to chat with other outdoor enthusiasts. You’ll find hikers who’ve just come off Snowdon and bikers sharing stories of their latest wipeouts. It’s a great place to get the "local lowdown" on which trails are riding best.
6. Llyn Padarn – Llanberis
Distance: 45 minutes
Postcode: LL55 4TY
If you’ve spent the day tackling the heights of Snowdon, head down to the shores of Llyn Padarn in Llanberis for the evening. There are several spots along the high street that do incredible takeaway pizzas.
Taking a pizza down to the lagoons as the light fades is magic. There’s a great play park near the Slate Museum, and the water is often calm enough for a cheeky evening dip if you’re feeling brave. It’s a bit further of a drive from Trawsfynydd, but well worth it for the lakeside vibes.
7. Portmeirion Village – Minffordd
Distance: 20 minutes
Address: Minffordd, Penrhyndeudraeth LL48 6ER
For something a bit more unique, head to the Italianate village of Portmeirion. In the evening, the day-trip crowds thin out, and the place takes on a dreamlike quality. They have a dedicated pizzeria (The Terrace) that overlooks the estuary.
It’s not your typical "pub with a slide," but the village itself is a giant playground for kids to explore. The architecture is wild, the colors are bright, and the sunsets over the estuary are world-class.
