There is a specific kind of magic that happens in North Wales around 7:00 PM in June. The sun starts its slow, lazy descent over the Rhinogydd mountains, the air cools just enough to make a light jumper feel like a hug, and after a day of scaling peaks or hurtling down mountain bike trails, your legs start to tell you exactly how they feel about your life choices.
I’ve spent many evenings sitting on the stone walls here at Rhiw Goch Inn, watching that golden light hit the 16th-century stone of the old inn we’re painstakingly restoring. It’s quiet, it’s peaceful, and it’s home. But I also know that when you’re here on holiday in North Wales with the family, the "peace and quiet" only lasts until the kids realise they’re hungry and you realise you haven't thought about dinner.
Whether you’re staying in our The Lodge House, tucked away in The Hideaway Bed, or pitched up at our Rhiw Goch Inn campsite in Bronaber, you’re perfectly positioned. We are right in the heart of Snowdonia (Eryri) National Park, just off the A470, which means within a 15-to-45-minute drive, you can find the holy grail of evening relaxation: a pint for you, a massive pizza for the kids, a play area to burn off that last bit of adrenaline, and a pudding that makes the hike up Snowdon feel worth it.
Here are my top five "Sundowner" spots within an hour of LL41 4UY that I personally vouch for.
1. The Local Hero: Rhiw Goch Lodge (Bronaber)
Distance: 2-minute walk from our campsite.
Address: Bronaber, Trawsfynydd, Blaenau Ffestiniog, LL41 4UY.
You don’t even need to start the car for this one. If you’re staying with us at Rhiw Goch Inn, the Lodge is our immediate neighbour. Now, don’t get confused, I’m currently busy with the big renovation of the historic 12th-century Inn, but the Lodge is the active bar and restaurant on the Bronaber site.
It’s got that classic, laid-back lodge vibe. The best part? The massive outdoor space. There’s a dedicated kids' play area where they can climb and slide while you sit with a cold pint of local ale and watch the sunset over the Trawsfynydd moors. Their menu is solid pub fare, think burgers, fish and chips, and often a stone-baked pizza special that hits the spot. It’s the ultimate "I’m too tired to drive" solution.
2. The Historic Gem: The Oakeley Arms (Maentwrog)
Distance: 12 minutes drive.
Address: Tan y Bwlch, Maentwrog, Blaenau Ffestiniog, LL41 3YU.
Just down the road in the stunning Vale of Ffestiniog is the Oakeley Arms. This place is a staple for us. It’s a grand old coaching inn with a beer garden that seems to go on forever. They have a fantastic play park for the children, which is tucked far enough away from the tables that you can enjoy the "pints" part of the evening in peace, but close enough to keep an eye on the "play area" part.
They are well-known for their generous portions. If you’ve spent the day at Coed y Brenin Forest Park (which is just a few miles from us), you’ll need the calories. Their puddings are legendary, try the sticky toffee pudding; it’s basically a North Wales rite of passage.
3. The Riverside Retreat: The Grapes Hotel (Maentwrog)
Distance: 10 minutes drive.
Address: Maentwrog, Blaenau Ffestiniog, LL41 3HY.
The Grapes is one of the oldest inns in Wales, and you can feel the history the moment you walk in. While it’s a bit more of a traditional "gastropub" feel, it’s incredibly welcoming to families. They have a lovely outdoor seating area where you can hear the river nearby.
It’s my go-to spot when I want something a bit more refined than a standard burger but still want that relaxed Snowdonia atmosphere. Their local Welsh lamb is incredible, but keep an eye on their specials board for their handmade pizzas. It’s a great place to sit back and chat about which trail you’re going to tackle tomorrow.
4. The Community Hub: The Bryn Arms (Gellilydan)
Distance: 8 minutes drive.
Address: Gellilydan, Blaenau Ffestiniog, LL41 4EN.
Just a hop, skip, and a jump from Trawsfynydd, The Bryn Arms is a proper local pub. It’s got a great beer garden and a very friendly, "everyone-is-welcome" vibe. It’s the kind of place where the locals will give you tips on the best secret swimming spots or which path up the mountain is currently the least boggy.
They do a fantastic Sunday roast if you’re here for the weekend, but for a weekday sundowner, their pub classics are hard to beat. It’s simple, honest, and exactly what you want after a day in the fresh air.
5. The Ultimate Sunset: Dylan’s (Criccieth)
Distance: 35 minutes drive.
Address: Maes-y-Mor, Criccieth, LL52 0HU.
If you’re willing to drive a little further toward the coast, you have to go to Dylan’s in Criccieth. It’s housed in a stunning Art Deco building right on the water’s edge. This is the place for the "Pizzas" part of our title. They are famous for them, thin, crispy, and topped with local ingredients.
Sitting on their terrace with a glass of wine or a local cider while the sun disappears into the sea behind Criccieth Castle is an experience you won't forget. It’s a bit more of a drive from Bronaber, but for a special "last night of the holiday" meal, it is unbeatable. Plus, the beach is right there for a post-dinner stroll to burn off the pudding.
Why Stay at Rhiw Goch Inn?
I might be biased, but I think we have the best seat in the house. When I moved here to take on the restoration of the Rhiw Goch Inn, I fell in love with the fact that you can be "in the middle of nowhere" and "in the middle of everything" all at once.
- Direct Access: You can walk straight out of our gate and onto trails that lead deep into the mountains.
- Mountain Biking: We are a stone's throw from Coed y Brenin, making us the perfect base for riders. Check out our guide on mountain biking accommodation in Wales.
- The Views: I’ve lived in a lot of places, but the sunsets over the Rhinogydd mountains from our campsite are something else. You don’t even have to leave the property to see them.
- The History: Staying here means being part of a story that started in the 12th century. We are currently working hard to bring the old tavern back to life, and every guest who stays in The Lodge House or The Hideaway Bed is helping us preserve this piece of Welsh heritage.

Planning Your June Escape
June is a fantastic time to visit. The days are long (sunset isn't until nearly 10:00 PM!), the rhododendrons are in full bloom, and the local events are starting to kick off. Whether you’re looking for family holiday destinations in North Wales or a quiet rural retreat, we’ve got you covered.
Pro Tip: If you’re coming in June 2026, keep an eye out for local village fairs in Trawsfynydd and Blaenau Ffestiniog. There’s usually a lot of local pride on display, plenty of Welsh cakes, and maybe even some traditional music.
