If there’s one thing I’ve learned since taking the reins here at Rhiw Goch Inn, it’s that a Snowdonia sunset is best enjoyed with a cold drink in one hand and a plan for tomorrow in the other. I’m Peter Dive, and if you’ve been following our journey in Bronaber, you’ll know we’re knee-deep in restoring our 16th-century Grade 2 listed inn. It’s a labor of love (and a lot of dust), but while the main tavern is a work in progress, our holiday accommodation, like the luxury Lodge House and the cozy Hideaway, is very much open for business.

Local Watering Holes & Hidden Grub
When the sun starts to dip behind the Rhinogydd mountains, you need a spot to refuel. Here are my top picks for a bit of North Wales hospitality.
1. The Cross Foxes, Trawsfynydd
Postcode: LL41 4SB (approx. 5 mins away)
Right on our doorstep. It’s a classic lakeside pub where you can grab a solid meal after a day of cycling around the Trawsfynydd lake. It’s unpretentious, friendly, and exactly what you need when you don’t want to drive more than five minutes.
2. The Bryn Arms, Gellilydan
Postcode: LL41 4EN (approx. 10 mins away)
If you’re heading back from a day exploring the mountains, stop here. It’s a proper country pub. I’ve had many a good chat here about the local slate history over a pint of something cold. Great atmosphere.
3. Grapes Hotel, Maentwrog
Postcode: LL41 3HY (approx. 15 mins away)
This is a historic coaching inn that feels like stepping back in time, but with much better food. It’s famous locally for its character. If you’re coming back from Porthmadog, it’s the perfect halfway point.
4. Prysor Garage, Trawsfynydd
Postcode: LL41 4UE (approx. 5 mins away)
Don't let the name fool you. Yes, it’s a garage. Yes, they sell fuel. But they also serve some of the best, most surprising British comfort food in the area. It’s a local "hidden gem" in every sense of the word. Perfect for a quick, hearty lunch.
5. Y Pengwern, Llan Ffestiniog
Postcode: LL41 4PB (approx. 12 mins away)
A community-run pub that’s the beating heart of Llan Ffestiniog. It’s cozy, welcoming, and often has that traditional Welsh village vibe that you just can't manufacture.
6. The Eagle Inn, Llanuwchllyn
Postcode: LL23 7UB (approx. 25 mins away)
I call this the "time capsule pub." It’s at the end of Bala Lake and feels like it hasn't changed in fifty years, in the best way possible. It’s where the locals meet, the ales are local, and the welcome is genuine.
7. Not Only Spaghetti, Dolgellau
Postcode: LL40 1AF (approx. 20 mins away)
If you’ve had enough pub grub for one week, head into Dolgellau. This Italian spot is a favorite for our guests staying in The Hideaway. Great pasta, better wine, and a lovely change of pace.
8. Snowdonia Park Brewpub, Waunfawr
Postcode: LL55 4AQ (approx. 45 mins away)
Worth the drive if you’re a fan of craft beer. They brew their own on-site. It’s right next to the Welsh Highland Railway, so you can watch the steam trains go by while you sip a pint of 'Red Dragon.'
9. The Hook, Dyffryn Ardudwy
Postcode: LL44 2BE (approx. 35 mins away)
A bit more modern and great if you fancy some fresh seafood or a contemporary twist on Welsh classics. It's a great stop-off if you've been spending the afternoon at the beach.
10. Ty Coch Inn, Porthdinllaen
Postcode: LL53 6DB (approx. 1 hour away)
Okay, this is right on the edge of the one-hour radius, but it’s arguably the most famous beach pub in Wales. You have to walk across the sand to get there. It’s the ultimate "sundowner" spot.
Family Fun & Adventure
If you’re staying at Rhiw Goch Inn with the family, you’re perfectly positioned. We’re right on the A470, which is basically the artery of adventure in Snowdonia.
11. Coed y Brenin Forest Park
Postcode: LL40 2HZ (approx. 10 mins away)
This is the holy grail for mountain bikers, but it’s also fantastic for families who just want a woodland walk. They have world-class trails, a great visitor center, and a play area for the little ones. I often head down there just to clear my head (and pretend I’m much faster on a bike than I actually am).
12. Llyn Trawsfynydd (Trawsfynydd Lake)
Postcode: LL41 4RE (approx. 5 mins away)
You can walk or cycle the loop around the lake. It’s peaceful, stunning, and offers some of the best fishing in North Wales. It’s literally just down the road from our campsite in Bronaber.
13. Zip World Llechwedd, Blaenau Ffestiniog
Postcode: LL41 3NB (approx. 15 mins away)
For the adrenaline junkies. Underground trampolines (Bounce Below) and deep mine tours. It’s a massive hit with kids (and adults who haven't quite grown up yet). It’s also a great "rainy day" option since much of it is underground.
14. Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways
Postcode: LL41 3ES (approx. 15 mins away)
There is something magical about a steam train puffing through the mountains. It starts in Blaenau Ffestiniog and winds down to the coast at Porthmadog. It’s a slower pace of life and the views are unbeatable.
15. Portmeirion Village
Postcode: LL48 6ER (approx. 20 mins away)
An Italianate village in the middle of Wales. It’s surreal, colorful, and beautiful. Perfect for a family wander, some gelato, and a bit of "The Prisoner" nostalgia if you’re of a certain vintage.
16. Harlech Castle
Postcode: LL46 2YH (approx. 25 mins away)
A UNESCO World Heritage site. It sits perched on a rock looking out over the sea. Kids love exploring the battlements, and the town of Harlech has some great little ice cream shops to reward them afterward.
17. Sygun Copper Mine, Beddgelert
Postcode: LL55 4NE (approx. 30 mins away)
Another great one for a drizzly day. You can take a self-guided tour through the old workings. Beddgelert itself is one of the prettiest villages in Wales: make sure to visit the legend of Gelert the dog while you’re there.
18. Barmouth Bridge & Beach
Postcode: LL42 1NF (approx. 40 mins away)
Walking across the wooden railway bridge into Barmouth is a rite of passage. The beach is huge, sandy, and perfect for a traditional day at the seaside.
19. Precipice Walk, Dolgellau
Postcode: LL40 2NG (approx. 20 mins away)
Don’t let the name scare you; it’s a relatively level walk with some of the most dramatic views of the Mawddach Estuary and Cader Idris. It’s my go-to recommendation for guests who want "big views" without the "big climb."
20. Cader Idris (Pony Path)
Postcode: LL40 1TN (approx. 25 mins away)
If you do want the big climb, Cader Idris is the local giant. It’s more atmospheric and often quieter than Snowdon. The Pony Path from Ty Nant is the most family-friendly route up, but it’ll still give your legs a workout!
