There is something about a Snowdonia sunset that just hits differently. Sitting here on the terrace at Rhiw Goch Inn, watching the sky turn a deep shade of amber over the Rhinogydd mountains, I’m reminded why Leticia and I fell in love with this corner of North Wales. It’s not just the mountains; it’s the pace of life.
When you’re planning a holiday in North Wales, the "where to eat" and "what to do with the kids" questions usually top the list. I get it. You’ve spent the day hiking the Snowdon walks or tearing up the trails at Coed y Brenin, and now the stomach is rumbling, and the kids are starting to get that "hangry" look.
I’ve spent plenty of time "researching" the local establishments (it’s a tough job, but someone has to do it), and I’ve pulled together five of my absolute favourite spots within a short drive of our base here in Trawsfynydd (LL41 4UY). Whether you’re after a pint of local ale or a place where the kids can burn off that last bit of energy, these are the top-tier picks to get your trip started.
1. The Grapes Hotel, Maentwrog (15 Mins Drive)
Address: Maentwrog, Blaenau Ffestiniog, LL41 3HY
If you’re looking for a pub that feels like it’s been plucked straight out of a period drama, The Grapes is your spot. This is a classic 17th-century coaching inn, and it’s just about 15 minutes down the A470 from us.
I love the vibe here. It’s got that thick stone wall, dark wood, "I-could-stay-here-all-night" atmosphere. It’s famous for its Sunday roast, but honestly, their evening menu is top-notch any day of the week. It’s family-friendly but also has enough cozy corners for a romantic dinner if you’ve managed to ditch the kids for an hour.
- Why I like it: The history. You can feel the centuries of travelers who have stopped here.
- Pro Tip: If the weather is decent, the outdoor seating area is a great place to soak in the valley views.
2. Coed y Brenin Forest Park (15 Mins Drive)
Address: Ganllwyd, Dolgellau, LL40 2HZ
Now, this isn't a pub, but it is the ultimate family activity hub. If you’re staying at our mountain biking accommodation, Coed y Brenin is your mecca. It’s the UK's first dedicated mountain bike centre, and it is world-class.
But even if you aren't a hardcore rider, it’s brilliant for families. They have fantastic walking trails, a huge wooden play area for the kids, and a visitor centre with a café that serves a mean slice of cake. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon before heading back to the Inn for a BBQ at the campsite.
- Activities: Mountain biking (all levels), trail running, and geocaching.
- Peter’s Take: I’m more of a "gentle walk through the pines" kind of guy these days, but watching the pros fly down the black runs is a sport in itself.
3. Zip World Llechwedd & Bounce Below (20 Mins Drive)
Address: Llechwedd Slate Caverns, Blaenau Ffestiniog, LL41 3NB
You can't talk about a Snowdonia holiday without mentioning Zip World. Located in the historic slate town of Blaenau Ffestiniog, this place is legendary.
If you have teenagers, "Bounce Below" is a must. It’s essentially a giant subterranean trampoline park set inside a cavern twice the size of St Paul’s Cathedral. It’s lit up with neon lights and is genuinely one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. For the real adrenaline junkies, the Titan zip line will have you screaming over the slate landscape.
- The Vibe: High energy and historic. The slate mines are a massive part of our local heritage.
- Top Tip: It gets busy, especially in May, so book your slots well in advance!
4. The Bryn Arms, Gellilydan (5-10 Mins Drive)
Address: Gellilydan, Blaenau Ffestiniog, LL41 4EN
This is our closest neighbor and a "proper" local pub. If you don't want to venture far from your Lodge House or Hideaway Bed, hop in the car for five minutes to Gellilydan.
The Bryn Arms is unpretentious, friendly, and serves solid pub grub. It’s the kind of place where the locals know each other, but they’ll always give you a warm Welsh welcome. It's dog-friendly, too, which is a big plus for many of our guests.
- Best For: A quick, easy meal and a pint of local Bitter.
- Peter’s Choice: Their burgers are exactly what you need after a long day of exploring.
5. Harlech Castle & Beach (40 Mins Drive)
Address: Harlech, LL46 2YH

If you’re willing to drive a bit further toward the coast (it's a stunning drive, trust me), Harlech is a winner. The castle is a UNESCO World Heritage site and looks like something out of a fairytale, perched on a cliff edge.
After you’ve explored the battlements, head down to Harlech Beach. It’s a massive expanse of golden sand with some of the best dunes in Wales. It’s perfect for a "sundowner" picnic. If you prefer a seat and a glass, the local ice cream shops and cafes in the town are fantastic.
- The Mix: History for the adults, sand and sea for the kids.
- Distance: About 40 minutes from LL41 4UY, making it an easy afternoon trip.
Why We Love This Spot (And Why You Will Too)
Living at the Rhiw Goch Inn isn't just about the bricks and mortar, though we are working hard on the 16th-century restoration! It's about being in the heart of everything. Whether you're staying in our luxury Lodge House with its underfloor heating (a godsend even in May!) or pitching a tent on our campsite to catch those mountain views, you're perfectly placed.
One of the real treats of being here in late May is the light. The days are long, the Rhinogydd mountains are glowing, and the air is just starting to carry that summer warmth. It’s the perfect time to explore the local pubs and attractions before the peak summer rush.
I'm often asked on Reddit and local forums: "Is Snowdonia good for families?" My answer is always a resounding yes. Between the adventure of Zip World, the history of Harlech, and the sheer beauty of Llyn Trawsfynydd (which is literally on our doorstep), you’ll never run out of things to do.
