If you’re reading this, you’re likely planning a holiday in North Wales, and let me tell you: you’ve picked the perfect time. July is when this landscape truly comes alive. The heather is starting to purple, the sun hangs late in the sky, and there is nothing quite like a "Snowdonia Sundowner" after a long day of exploring.
Here at Rhiw Goch Inn, specifically in our little corner of Bronaber near Trawsfynydd, we’re right in the thick of it. While I’m busy overseeing the restoration of our 16th-century Grade 2 listed inn (it’s going to be a cracker of a tavern once it's finished, trust me!), I spend plenty of time scouting out the best spots for our guests to eat, drink, and be merry.
Whether you're staying in The Lodge House, hiding away in our Hideaway Bed apartment, or pitching up at our campsite, you’re going to need some local intel. So, grab a brew (or something stronger), and let me walk you through my favourite family-friendly haunts and attractions within an hour’s drive of LL41 4UY.
The "Pubs & Grub" Tour: Family-Friendly Favorites
Finding a good pub that welcomes muddy boots, energetic kids, and wagging tails is an art form. Here are five of my top picks that never fail to deliver a proper Welsh welcome.
1. Y Pengwern, Llan Ffestiniog (LL41 4UY)
You can’t get much more "local" than this. Just a stone's throw from us in Trawsfynydd, Y Pengwern is a community-owned gem. It’s got that authentic, rugged charm you only find in the Welsh hills. It’s incredibly family-friendly and is the perfect spot for a post-hike pint while the kids settle in with a board game.
2. Prince Llewelyn, Beddgelert (LL55 4YB)
Beddgelert is one of those postcard-perfect villages you see on calendars. The "Prince" is right by the river, making it a fantastic spot for a summer evening. They’ve got a solid kids' menu and they love dogs just as much as humans. After dinner, take the short walk to Gelert’s Grave: the kids will love the legend, and it burns off that extra energy before the drive back to Bronaber.
3. Snowdonia Parc Pub & Microbrewery, Waunfawr (LL55 4AQ)
If you like your beer brewed about ten feet from where you’re sitting, this is the place. It features a dedicated family room, a playground for the little ones, and even its own microbrewery. It’s positioned right on the Welsh Highland Railway line, so you might even see a steam train chugging past while you eat.
4. Tafarn Pencei, Porthmadog (LL49 9AT)
For a change of scenery, head down to the harbour at Porthmadog. Tafarn Pencei sits right on the waterfront. There’s something special about watching the boats bob in the harbour with a plate of locally sourced food in front of you. It’s a great family-friendly atmosphere with plenty of locally brewed ales for the grown-ups.
5. The Railway Inn, Abergynolwyn (near LL36 9YP)
A bit further south, but well worth the drive. This is a classic, cosy village pub. The menu is all about homemade comfort food: exactly what you want after a day exploring the southern reaches of the National Park. It’s dog-friendly and always has a warm, welcoming vibe.
Family Fun: Attractions for Every Adventurer
When you aren't busy mountain biking at Coed y Brenin or conquering the trails directly from Rhiw Goch Inn, North Wales has plenty of world-class attractions to keep the whole tribe entertained.
- Bala Lake Railway, Llanuwchllyn (LL23 7DD): A personal favourite of mine. There is nothing quite like the smell of coal smoke and the "chuff-chuff" of a steam engine. The line runs along the shore of Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake), offering some of the best views in the park without having to break a sweat.
- Portmeirion Village, Minffordd (LL48 6ER): It’s like someone took a slice of Italy and dropped it onto the Welsh coast. It’s colourful, quirky, and has fantastic woodland gardens and a land train that kids adore.
- Sygun Copper Mine, Beddgelert (LL55 4NE): If the weather turns (it is Wales, after all!), head underground. The self-guided tours are fascinating, and the gold panning outside is a hit with budding explorers.
- Gypsy Wood Family Park, Caernarfon (LL55 2UG): Spread over 20 acres, this is a paradise for younger kids. It’s got animals, a fairy forest, and a miniature railway. It’s a great way to spend a lazy July afternoon.
- Harlech Castle, Harlech (LL46 2YH): A UNESCO World Heritage site that looks exactly like a castle should. They run brilliant family tours where you can learn about the "men of Harlech" and the various sieges the walls have survived.
What's On: July 2026 Events
July is peak season for events here, and 2026 is looking particularly busy. If you’re staying with us at Rhiw Goch Inn, make sure you mark these on your calendar:
- Sesiwn Fawr Dolgellau (July 16-19, 2026): One of my highlights of the year! This folk music festival takes over the nearby town of Dolgellau. It’s a riot of world music, workshops, and children’s activities. The atmosphere is electric and very family-friendly.
- International Snowdon Race (July 18, 2026): Head over to Llanberis to watch some of the fittest people on earth run up and down Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon). It’s an incredible spectacle and there’s usually a great buzz in the village.
- Summer Family Meet (July 17-19, 2026): Taking place in the Nant Peris and Beddgelert area, this is a great gathering for outdoor-loving families with guided walks and social events.
- Meet the Castle Family Tours (Harlech Castle): These are running daily throughout the summer. It’s a great way to get the kids interested in history without it feeling like a school lesson.
- TLC Teddies Grand Day Out (Bala Lake Railway): While the big event was earlier in the month, keep an eye out for their regular family-themed steam days which run throughout the summer.
