Right then, let's talk about that "what now?" moment. You know the one. You’ve spent a glorious day in the heart of Snowdonia: maybe you’ve been tackling the world-class mountain biking trails at Coed y Brenin, or perhaps you’ve just about managed to drag the family up a section of the Snowdon path. Now, the sun is starting to dip behind the Rhinogydd mountains, casting that incredible orange glow over the campsite here at Rhiw Goch Inn, and the collective hunger of your group is starting to manifest as "hangry" stares.
I’m Peter Dive, and believe me, I’ve been there. Living and working here in Bronaber, just outside Trawsfynydd, I’ve made it my personal mission to scout out every nook and cranny of this region for the best evening spots. Whether you’re looking for a pint of local ale, a burger that requires two hands and a napkin, or a way to tire the kids out one last time before bed, I’ve got you covered.
Here are my top 15 picks for evening plans within an hour’s drive of Rhiw Goch Inn (LL41 4UY).
1. Rhiw Goch Inn (Right Here at Bronaber!)
Address: Rhiw Goch Inn, Bronaber, Trawsfynydd, LL41 4UY
Drive time: 0 minutes (You're already here!)
I might be biased, but there is nowhere else on earth I’d rather be when the sun sets. We’re currently in the middle of a massive restoration of our 16th-century, Grade 2 listed inn. While the main tavern is being lovingly restored to its former glory (complete with plans for a games room and self-contained apartments), our campsite and holiday apartments are buzzing.
Grab a chair, light a firepit, and enjoy the best sunset in Wales. If you’re staying in The Lodge House, you’ve got underfloor heating and a luxury cast iron bath waiting for you. It’s the perfect "low-travel" evening.
2. The Cross Foxes, Trawsfynydd
Address: Trawsfynydd, Blaenau Ffestiniog, LL41 4SB
Drive time: 5 minutes
Just down the road in the village of Trawsfynydd, the Cross Foxes is a proper local hub. It’s right near the lake, making it a great spot to hit after a late afternoon stroll or a bit of fishing. It’s traditional, welcoming, and exactly what you want when you need a reliable meal without driving across the county.
3. The Bryn Arms, Gellilydan
Address: Gellilydan, Blaenau Ffestiniog, LL41 4EN
Drive time: 8 minutes
This is one of those hidden gems. It’s a classic Welsh pub that’s popular with walkers and mountain bikers alike. The atmosphere is always warm, and it’s a fantastic place to swap stories about your day’s adventures over a cold drink.

4. CellB, Blaenau Ffestiniog
Address: Park Square, Blaenau Ffestiniog, LL41 3AD
Drive time: 15 minutes
If you want something a bit different, head into "The Slate Capital." CellB is a converted Edwardian police station that is now a cinema, bar, and youth venue. They do incredible burgers, and the vibe is effortlessly cool. It’s a great shout for families with teenagers who might find traditional pubs a bit "old hat."
5. Zip World Llechwedd (Deep Mine Tour & Bounce Below)
Address: Llechwedd Slate Caverns, Blaenau Ffestiniog, LL41 3NB
Drive time: 18 minutes
While Zip World is famous for its day activities, they often have later slots for their underground adventures. "Bounce Below" is basically a massive subterranean trampoline park in a cave lit up with neon lights. It’s surreal, exhausting, and the kids will love it. Plus, being underground, it doesn't matter what the Welsh weather is doing!
6. Coed y Brenin Forest Park (Evening Walks)
Address: Dolgellau, LL40 2HZ
Drive time: 10 minutes
Most people head here for the mountain biking, but the forest takes on a magical quality in the early evening. The visitor centre might be closed, but the trails remain open. A sunset walk through the Douglas Firs is the ultimate way to decompress.
7. The George III, Penmaenpool
Address: Penmaenpool, Dolgellau, LL40 1YD
Drive time: 25 minutes
This is one of my personal favourites. It sits right on the edge of the Mawddach Estuary. If the tide is in, the water literally laps at the walls of the pub. It’s an iconic spot for a "holiday North Wales" photo, and the food is top-notch. It’s a bit of a drive, but the views of the estuary are worth every mile.
8. Portmeirion Village & Gardens
Address: Minffordd, Penrhyndeudraeth, LL48 6ER
Drive time: 25 minutes
You’d be forgiven for thinking you’ve accidentally driven to Italy. Portmeirion is a fairytale village that is spectacular in the evening light. Walking through the gardens and along the Dwyryd Estuary as the crowds thin out is a peaceful experience you won't forget.

9. Y Stablau (The Stables), Betws-y-Coed
Address: Royal Oak Hotel, Betws-y-Coed, LL24 0AY
Drive time: 35 minutes
Betws-y-Coed is the "Gateway to Snowdonia" and always has a bit of a buzz. Y Stablau is a great, large pub with plenty of outdoor seating (and heaters!). They often have live music, and it’s a fantastic spot to soak up the atmosphere of this mountain village.
10. Harlech Castle & The Lion Hotel
Address: Harlech, LL46 2YH
Drive time: 30 minutes
Watching the sunset behind the silhouette of Harlech Castle is a "must-do." The Lion Hotel nearby offers a great vantage point and solid pub food. Afterward, you can take a walk down to Harlech Beach, which is vast and usually quite empty in the evenings.
11. Bala Lake (Llyn Tegid) & The White Lion Royal Hotel
Address: High St, Bala, LL23 7AE
Drive time: 25 minutes
Bala is a hub for water sports, but in the evening, the lake becomes a mirror for the sky. The White Lion is a historic coaching inn that’s been serving weary travellers for centuries. It’s a great place to stop after a drive over the scenic mountain pass from Trawsfynydd.
12. Porthmadog Harbour & The Spooner's Bar
Address: Harbour Station, Porthmadog, LL49 9NF
Drive time: 25 minutes
Located at the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways station, Spooner’s is a brilliant spot for rail enthusiasts and families. You can sit on the platform with a pint and watch the steam engines being put to bed for the night. It’s got a great atmosphere and plenty of space for the kids to move around.
13. The Cwellyn Arms, Rhyd Ddu
Address: Rhyd Ddu, Caernarfon, LL54 6TL
Drive time: 45 minutes
If you’ve been hiking Snowdon via the Rhyd Ddu path, this is your reward. It’s a proper walkers' pub with an open fire and a huge selection of real ales. It’s about a 45-minute drive from us at Rhiw Goch Inn, but the drive itself takes you through some of the most dramatic scenery in the National Park.
14. Greenwood Family Park (Special Events)
Address: Bush Rd, Y Felinheli, LL56 4QN
Drive time: 55 minutes
While primarily a daytime attraction, Greenwood occasionally hosts evening events, especially during the summer months. It’s widely regarded as one of the best family attractions in the UK, focusing on eco-friendly fun. Always check their schedule before heading out!
15. Adventure Parc Snowdonia
Address: Conway Rd, Dolgarrog, LL32 8QE
Drive time: 55 minutes
For the high-energy crowd, this place is unbeatable. You can watch people surfing on a man-made lagoon in the middle of the Welsh mountains while you enjoy a pizza at their restaurant. It’s a bit of a trek from Bronaber, but for the sheer "wow" factor, it’s worth the hour’s drive.

Coming Back to Rhiw Goch Inn
No matter where your evening takes you, there is nothing quite like coming back to the peace and quiet of Bronaber. After a busy day and an evening of exploring local pubs and attractions, pulling up to your lodge or campsite pitch under the vast, star-filled Snowdonia sky is the perfect end to the day.
We’re working hard on the history of Rhiw Goch and its future, and every time you stay with us, you’re helping us restore a piece of Welsh heritage.
So, ready for your next adventure? Head over to www.rhiwgochinn.co.uk and book your stay. Whether you're here for the biking, the hiking, or just the sunset and a quiet pint, we can't wait to see you.
