If there’s one thing I’ve learned since taking over the Rhiw Goch Inn, it’s that a Welsh sunset is best served with a cold pint and a bit of a laugh. There’s something about the way the light hits the Rhinogydd mountains that makes you forget your phone, your emails, and that one squeaky floorboard I’ve been meaning to fix.
Living and working in Bronaber, right in the heart of Trawsfynydd, I get asked all the time: "Peter, where’s the best place for a sundowner?" Well, usually I tell them to just step outside their door at our holiday accommodation, because let’s be honest, the view from our terrace is hard to beat. But, if you’re looking to explore a bit of North Wales and fancy a drive, I’ve put together my personal "Golden Hour Hit List."
Whether you’re staying in The Lodge House, tucked up in The Hideaway Bed, or pitching a tent at our campsite, these ten spots are all within an hour’s drive of LL41 4UY. Grab your keys (and a designated driver), because we’re going pub-crawling for the views.
1. Rhiw Goch Inn (The Home Turf)
Address: Bronaber, Trawsfynydd, Blaenau Ffestiniog LL41 4UY
Drive time: 0 minutes (You’re already here!)
I’m biased, I know. But seriously, look at the photo above. Our beer garden looks directly across the valley toward the Rhinogydd mountains. While I’m busy renovating the main 16th-century inn to its former glory, our guests in the self-catering apartments have front-row seats to what I firmly believe is the best sunset in the UK. Grab a local ale, sit on the lawn, and watch the sky turn from gold to deep violet. It’s the perfect way to end a day of mountain biking at Coed y Brenin Forest Park.
2. The Cross Foxes, Trawsfynydd
Address: Trawsfynydd, Blaenau Ffestiniog LL41 4UA
Drive time: 5 minutes
Just down the road from us in the village of Trawsfynydd. It’s a proper, salt-of-the-earth Welsh pub. If you want to chat with the locals about the best fishing spots on the lake or the history of Hedd Wyn, this is the place. The evening light hits the stone buildings of the village beautifully. It’s simple, honest, and exactly what a local pub should be.
3. The Grapes Hotel, Maentwrog
Address: Maentwrog, Blaenau Ffestiniog LL41 4HY
Drive time: 10 minutes
This is one of the oldest coaching inns in the area, and it’s got character coming out of its ears. They have a lovely outdoor seating area where you can watch the sun disappear behind the steep, wooded hills of the Vale of Ffestiniog. Their food is top-notch, too: perfect for a family meal after a long day of hiking.
4. The Oakeley Arms, Maentwrog
Address: Tan-y-Bwlch, Maentwrog, Blaenau Ffestiniog LL41 3YU
Drive time: 12 minutes
Located just a stone’s throw from the Ffestiniog Railway, the Oakeley Arms has a fantastic terrace. You’ll get that lovely late-afternoon glow reflecting off the steam from the passing trains if you time it right. It’s a great spot for holiday North Wales explorers who want a bit of history with their lager.
5. The Last Inn, Barmouth
Address: Church St, Barmouth LL42 1EL
Drive time: 30 minutes
If you’re craving a sea breeze, head to Barmouth. The Last Inn is a 15th-century building with a natural spring inside (seriously!). But the real draw is the location near the harbour. Walk across the Barmouth Bridge for the sunset, then head back here for a pint. The way the sun sinks into Cardigan Bay is world-class.
6. The Golden Fleece Inn, Tremadog
Address: 12-14 Market Square, Tremadog, Porthmadog LL49 9RB
Drive time: 20 minutes
Tremadog is a stunning little village built by William Madocks, and the Golden Fleece sits right on the square. It has a fantastic "secret" cellar bar and a great outdoor area. The rock faces behind the village glow orange in the evening light: it’s a dramatic backdrop for a glass of wine.
7. Ty Coch Inn, Porthdinllaen
Address: Porthdinllaen, Morfa Nefyn, Pwllheli LL53 6DB
Drive time: 55 minutes
This one is right on the edge of the hour-drive limit, but it’s often voted one of the best beach bars in the world. You have to walk across the beach or the golf course to get there. It’s literally on the sand. Watching the sun set over the Irish Sea here is a "bucket list" experience for anyone on a Snowdonia holiday.
8. Aberdunant Hall, Prenteg
Address: Prenteg, Porthmadog LL49 9SR
Drive time: 18 minutes
A bit more of a "hidden gem," this country house is set within a Victorian estate. The terrace looks out over the mountains and the Glaslyn Valley. It’s a bit more refined, so if you’re looking for a romantic "date night" sunset spot while staying at Rhiw Goch Inn, this is a winner.
9. The Brondanw Arms (The Garreg), Garreg
Address: Llanfrothen, Penrhyndeudraeth LL48 6AQ
Drive time: 15 minutes
Locally known as "The Garreg," this pub is owned by the Brondanw Estate (home of Clough Williams-Ellis, the creator of Portmeirion). It’s quirky, artistic, and has a great beer garden. The views of the mountains from here are spectacular as the shadows get long.
10. The Ship Inn, Llanbedrog
Address: Llanbedrog, Pwllheli LL53 7PF
Drive time: 50 minutes
Another coastal beauty. Llanbedrog is famous for its colorful beach huts and the tin man statue on the headland. The Ship Inn is a great family-friendly spot to retreat to after a day on the beach. It’s a bit of a trek from Bronaber, but if you’re making a day of it on the Llŷn Peninsula, it’s the perfect final stop.
