Alright, grab a brew and pull up a chair. I’m Peter Dive, and if you’ve been following our journey here at the Rhiw Goch Inn, you know we’re knee-deep in history, dust, and some of the most breathtaking views in North Wales. Since I took over this 16th-century Grade 2 listed beauty, my mission has been simple: restore this place to its former glory while making sure you lot have a cracking place to stay in the meantime.
Summer is officially knocking on the door here in Snowdonia (Eryri). The gorse is yellow, the sheep are… well, they’re everywhere, and the sunsets over the Rhinogydd mountains are starting to look like something out of a Ridley Scott film. If you’re looking for a Snowdonia Lodge or a proper Snowdon holiday, you’ve probably seen the chaos on Reddit and travel forums.
"Is it too busy?" "Where can I wild camp?" "Is there actually any parking?"
I’m here to cut through the noise and give you the local’s lowdown on why Rhiw Goch Inn (LL41 4UY) is your best bet for a summer getaway that doesn’t involve fighting for a square inch of grass.
The Lodge House: Luxury Without the Pretend
If you’re not the "sleeping on the ground" type (and look, my back isn't what it used to be either), then The Lodge House is where you want to be.
We’ve poured a lot of love into this two-story holiday home. It’s got underfloor heating for those weirdly chilly Welsh summer nights, a king-size bed that’s basically a cloud, and a luxury cast iron bath that’s perfect for soaking your legs after you’ve attempted to walk up Snowdon.
- Best for: Families and groups who want the "rustic" look but the "I want a hot shower and Netflix" reality.
- Capacity: King-size bed, two singles, and a sofa bed.
- The Vibe: Authentic Welsh stone on the outside, pure comfort on the inside.

The Hideaway: For the Sunset Chasers
If it’s just the two of you (or if you’re a solo hiker looking for some peace), The Hideaway is my personal favorite. It’s a cozy one-bedroom apartment, and the name isn't just marketing fluff. You really feel tucked away here.
The big draw? The views. You get a direct line of sight to the sunset over the Rhinogydd mountains. I’ve spent many an evening there with a cold drink, watching the sky turn purple, thinking about all the work I still have to do on the main Inn building. But hey, a man’s gotta rest.
Summer Camping in the Heart of Snowdonia
For the purists, our campsite is officially open. Now, we aren't one of those massive, noisy sites with a thousand screaming kids and a disco. We keep it intimate:
- 5 Electric Pitches: Perfect for campervans or those who need to charge their phones to post their mountain photos.
- Tent Spaces: Plenty of room for traditional campers who want to wake up to the sound of nothing but the wind and the odd "baaa."
- Direct Access: We’re right on the A470, which means you can get to Llanberis or Betws-y-Coed in no time, but you’re far enough off the road to feel the silence.
Answering Your Reddit Questions (The Honest Truth)
I spend a fair bit of time lurking on r/Snowdonia and r/UKCamping, and there are a few things people always ask. Here’s the Peter Dive take:
"Can I wild camp in Snowdonia?"
The short answer: No. Technically, you need the landowner's permission. The National Park authority is cracking down on it because, frankly, some people weren't leaving it as they found it. Save yourself the "move along" knock at 3 AM and book a proper spot at a site like ours. You get a toilet, a flat bit of ground, and you're helping us restore a 16th-century landmark. Win-win.
"Is Snowdon too busy in the summer?"
If you go up the Llanberis path at 11 AM on a Saturday? Yes, it’s like a queue for the Apple Store. My advice? Try the Rhinogydd mountains right on our doorstep. They are rugged, quiet, and offer views that'll make your Instagram followers weep. Or, if you must do Snowdon, start at dawn. The sunrise from the top is worth the lack of sleep.
"What’s the best base for mountain biking?"
You're looking at it. We are perfectly positioned for Coed y Brenin Forest Park. It’s just down the road, and the trails there are world-class. We get a lot of bikers staying in the Lodge because, let’s be honest, you need a proper bed after a day on those trails. Check out our guide on mountain biking in Wales for more.
Why Choose Rhiw Goch Inn (LL41 4UY)?
I know there are plenty of places to stay, but here’s why people keep coming back to us:
- The History: You’re staying on a site that dates back to the 12th century. The main Inn (which I’m currently restoring) was a focal point for the community before the fire in 2018. Staying here means you're part of its revival.
- The Location: We are the gateway to everything. Want to hike? The walks are right there. Want to bike? Coed y Brenin is minutes away. Want to relax? The sunsets won't cost you a penny.
- The Tone: We don't do "stuffy." We’re casual, we’re friendly, and we’re passionate about this corner of Wales.
Peter’s Summer Checklist
If you’re heading down this June or July, don’t forget:
- Midge Repellent: They aren't as bad as the Scottish ones, but they’ve got spirit.
- Layers: It’s Wales. You can have a heatwave at 2 PM and a monsoon at 4 PM.
- A Camera: Seriously, the light in the Rhinogydd during the "golden hour" is magic.
Book Your Stay
We’re filling up fast for the summer months. Whether you want the luxury of the Lodge or a quiet corner of the field for your tent, come and say hello.
