There’s a specific kind of magic that happens here at the Rhiw Goch Inn around 8:00 PM in July. I usually find myself leaning against a fence post near the campsite, holding a lukewarm tea (or something a bit stronger if the day’s renovation work has been particularly testing), watching the sun slide behind the Rhinogydd mountains. The sky turns a shade of pink that looks like it’s been stolen from a vintage postcard, and the air gets that crisp, Snowdonia edge to it.

I’m Peter Dive, and after spending years restoring this 16th-century Grade 2 listed beauty, I’ve done my "research" (mostly in the name of community spirit, honestly) on the best places to grab a pint and a plate within an hour of our front gate. Whether you’re looking for a holiday in North Wales that involves high-octane adventure or just a slow-paced family escape, here is my personal guide to the best sundowners and family-friendly spots in the heart of Eryri.
The Best "Sundowner" Pubs Near LL41 4UY
When people ask me on Reddit or over the garden fence where to go for a "proper" drink, I always tell them to look for the places where the locals actually sit. You want character, you want a bit of history, and you definitely want a view.
1. The Cross Foxes, Trawsfynydd (LL41 4SE)
This is practically our local. Located in the heart of Trawsfynydd village, just a stone's throw from the lake, it’s a classic traditional inn. It’s the kind of place where you can walk in with muddy boots after a lap of the Trawsfynydd Lake trail and feel right at home. It’s perfect for families and solo travellers alike. If you’ve spent the afternoon fishing or walking, this is the spot to recount your tales over a local ale.
2. The Grapes Hotel, Maentwrog (LL41 4EB)
Just about a 10-minute drive from us at Rhiw Goch Inn, The Grapes is one of the oldest coaching inns in Wales. It’s got a fantastic outdoor terrace that is absolutely lethal in the best way possible, you sit down for "one" and suddenly three hours have passed. The food is top-notch gastro-pub fare, and the atmosphere is wonderfully historic.
3. The Oakley Arms, Maentwrog (LL41 3YU)
Another Maentwrog gem. It’s grander than your average pub but keeps that welcoming Welsh warmth. They have a massive garden that looks out over the Vale of Ffestiniog. If you’re looking for a slightly more "grown-up" dinner while still being family-friendly, this is a solid bet.
4. Ty Coch Inn, Porthdinllaen (LL53 6DB)
Okay, this one is about a 50-minute drive, but listen to me: it was once voted the third best beach bar in the world. You have to park at Morfa Nefyn and walk across the beach at low tide to get there. There is nothing: and I mean nothing: quite like sitting on the wall with a pint, your feet in the sand, watching the sun set over the Irish Sea. It’s a bit of a trek from Bronaber, but if you’re making a day of the Llŷn Peninsula, it’s essential.
Family Fun: Activities Within 1 Hour
If you’re staying in The Lodge House or The Hideaway with the clan, you need more than just beer. You need a way to burn off that boundless energy that kids seem to have even after a five-mile hike.
Coed y Brenin Forest Park (LL40 2HZ)
This is essentially our backyard. It’s the UK's first bespoke mountain bike centre. Even if you aren't a hardcore rider, the walking trails are world-class. There’s a great café and a massive wooden play area for the little ones. I often see our guests heading out with bikes strapped to their cars, and they always come back with that exhausted, happy glow.
Zip World Llechwedd (LL41 3NB)
Located in Blaenau Ffestiniog, just 15 minutes north on the A470. This place is legendary. You can go deep underground into the old slate mines or fly over them on Titan 2. It’s an absolute must for families with older kids. It’s gritty, it’s historical, and it’s very, very fast.
Harlech Castle & Beach (LL46 2YH)
A 20-minute drive takes you to the coast. Harlech Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage site and has some of the best views of the Snowdonia range from its ramparts. Afterward, head down to the beach: the dunes are massive, the sand is golden, and it’s rarely crowded.
Where to Get the Best "Grub" (Local Bites)
Glaslyn Ice Cream Farm, Porthmadog (LL49 9AD)
If you want to win "Parent of the Year," take the kids here. They do "Sunset Specials" in the summer, and their artisanal flavours are honestly some of the best I’ve ever tasted. It’s a great stop-off on your way back to Bronaber from a day at the beach.
Hangin Pizzeria, Betws-y-Coed (LL24 0AY)
About 30 minutes away, this is the go-to spot for hikers. It’s casual, the pizzas are fantastic, and they support animal welfare charities. It has a great, buzzing vibe in the evenings, especially when the mountain marathon crowds are in town.
What’s Happening in July 2026?
July is a big month for us here in North Wales. If you’re visiting this week, you’ll notice a lot of people in high-vis and running shorts.
- Snowdonia Trail Marathon Eryri (July 11-12): This is one of the UK’s most challenging trail races. Even if you aren’t running, the atmosphere in Llanberis is electric. There’s a "Race Village" with food stalls and music.
- The Dolbadarn Dash: A 500m fun run for the kids: great for getting them involved without the 26-mile commitment!
- Snowdon24: A 24-hour mountain challenge where people try to summit Yr Wyddfa as many times as possible. It’s madness, but the camaraderie is incredible to witness.
Why Base Yourself at Rhiw Goch Inn?
I might be biased, but I think we’ve got the best spot in the park. We’re right on the A470, which means you can be in Blaenau Ffestiniog in 15 minutes, Dolgellau in 15, and the coast in 20. But once you turn off the main road into the Inn, it’s total silence: save for the odd sheep and the sound of the wind through the trees.
We’re currently pouring our hearts into restoring the original Rhiw Goch Inn. It’s a 16th-century building that’s seen a lot of history (and a bit of fire damage back in 2018), and we’re bringing it back to life as a tavern with a games room and more apartments.

Peter’s Pro-Tips for Your Visit
- Book the Pubs: In July, the good places like The Grapes or The Cross Foxes fill up fast. Give them a ring a day or two before.
- Layers, Layers, Layers: I don’t care if the forecast says 25 degrees. This is Snowdonia. Bring a waterproof and a jumper for when the sun goes down.
- Support Local: Buy your milk and bread at the Prysor Garage in Trawsfynydd. They are great people and keep the community running.
- Download Maps: Signal can be spotty when you’re deep in the forest or up a mountain. Download your Google Maps for the Bronaber area before you arrive.
