If you’ve ever sat on the deck at Rhiw Goch Inn with a cold drink in your hand as the sun dips behind the Rhinogydd mountains, you’ll know exactly why I’ve put down roots here. I’m Peter Dive, and while my days are usually spent managing renovations on our 16th-century Grade 2 listed inn or making sure the underfloor heating in The Lodge House is perfectly toasty, my evenings are all about the "Snowdonia Sundowner."
There’s something magical about the light in North Wales. It turns the rugged peaks of Snowdonia into gold and purple silhouettes. But if you’re staying with us in Bronaber or Trawsfynydd, you might want to venture out occasionally, even if it’s just to see if someone else's beer tastes as good as ours.
Whether you're looking for a holiday in North Wales that involves adrenaline-pumping family activities or just a quiet corner of a pub where the kids won't be frowned at for being, well, kids, I’ve got you covered. Here is my personal guide to the best spots within a 60-minute drive of our front gate at LL41 4UY.
1. The "Right on the Doorstep" Circle (0-15 Minutes)
You don’t have to go far for a world-class view. In fact, you don't even have to leave the property if you've booked one of our electric campsite pitches. But if you fancy a change of scenery:
Llyn Trawsfynydd & The Cross Foxes
Just a stone’s throw from us is Llyn Trawsfynydd (LL41 4RW). It’s a massive man-made reservoir that looks like something out of a Tolkien novel.
- The Vibe: Tranquil, vast, and great for a flat lakeside stroll.
- Family Fun: Grab the bikes and head around the lake or try a bit of fishing. It’s mostly level, so even the littlest legs can handle a walk.
- The Sundowner: The Cross Foxes in Trawsfynydd village is a solid choice for a post-walk pint. It’s a proper Welsh local where you can sit and watch the light change over the water.
The Grapes Hotel, Maentwrog
Drive about 10 minutes north on the A470 to Maentwrog (LL41 4HN).
- The Vibe: This is one of the oldest coaching inns in the area. It’s got that heavy stone, historic feel that I’m trying to bring back to life at the Rhiw Goch Tavern.
- The Sundowner: They have a fantastic outdoor seating area. It’s the perfect spot for a "Snowdonia Sundowner" after a day of hiking. The food is top-notch, too: try the local ale and a hearty pie.
2. The "Adrenaline & History" Hub (15-30 Minutes)
Heading slightly further afield brings you to the slate capital of the world: Blaenau Ffestiniog.
Zip World Llechwedd & The National Slate Museum
Blaenau Ffestiniog (LL41 3NB) is roughly 20 minutes away.
- Family Fun: If you want to keep the kids quiet, scare them (safely) at Zip World. Whether it’s the underground trampolines or the deep mine tour, it’s an absolute winner.
- Pro Tip: If you prefer something quieter, the National Slate Museum is fascinating and gives you a real sense of the grit and history of this landscape.
- The Sundowner: After dodging zip-liners, head to the Snowdonia Parc Brewpub in Waunfawr if you’re heading back via the scenic route, or grab a quick drink at one of the local Blaenau pubs to soak in the industrial-meets-mountain atmosphere.
Coed y Brenin Forest Park
Located just south of us (LL40 2HZ), this is a mountain biker’s heaven.
- Family Fun: Even if you aren't a hardcore cyclist, the walking trails are world-class. I often take the family here for a "pre-sundowner" walk to tire the kids out so I can enjoy my evening drink in peace back at The Hideaway.
3. The "Seaside & Steam" Circle (30-60 Minutes)
If you’re willing to drive an hour, the whole of the North Wales coast opens up.
Barmouth Beach & The Last Inn
Drive southwest to Barmouth (LL42 1LS).
- Family Fun: It’s your classic seaside experience: donkeys, ice cream, and a huge sandy beach. Perfect for crabbing off the harbour wall.
- The Sundowner: The Last Inn is a personal favourite. It’s one of Wales’ most famous pubs, built right into the rock. It’s quirky, historic, and usually has live music.
Portmeirion & The Golden Fleece, Tremadog
Heading west brings you to the surreal Italianate village of Portmeirion (LL48 6ET).
- Family Fun: It’s like stepping into another country. The kids love the colourful buildings and the woodland trails.
- The Sundowner: On your way back to Rhiw Goch Inn, stop in Tremadog (LL49 9RB) at The Golden Fleece Inn. It’s got a great atmosphere, excellent food, and it’s a brilliant place to toast a successful day in Snowdonia.
Bala Lake Railway
To the east, you’ll find Bala (LL23 7PD).
- Family Fun: The Bala Lake Railway is a hit with smaller kids. It’s a steam train that chuffs along the edge of the lake.
- The Sundowner: Grab a drink at one of the pubs in Bala High Street before the 25-minute drive back to Bronaber.

Why Rhiw Goch Inn is Your Best "Base Camp"
I might be biased, but there is no better feeling than returning to Rhiw Goch Inn after a day of exploring. Our location right on the A470 makes all these spots incredibly accessible, yet we’re tucked away enough that you get total peace and quiet (and those unbeatable sunset views).
- For Couples: The Hideaway offers a cozy sanctuary with mountain views that are second to none.
- For Families: The Lodge House has everything you need: luxury bath, underfloor heating, and enough space for everyone to relax.
- For Adventurers: Our campsite is perfectly positioned for those wanting to wake up and hit the Snowdon trails or the Coed y Brenin bike paths immediately.
We’re currently working hard on the restoration of the main Inn. Soon, you won't even have to leave the grounds to find the best tavern in Wales! But until then, these local gems will more than keep you entertained.
