There’s a specific kind of magic that happens here at Rhiw Goch Inn around 6:00 AM in June. I usually roll out of bed, grab a steaming mug of coffee, and stand out by the old stone walls of the Inn. The mist is often clinging to the Trawsfynydd lake down in the valley, and the Rhinogydd mountains are just starting to catch that first golden light. It’s quiet, properly quiet, save for a few sheep waking up and the distant sound of the A470 waking up for the day.
I’m Peter Dive, and if you’ve been following our journey, you know I’m neck-deep in restoring this 16th-century beauty. But while I’m busy with lime mortar and heritage beams, the rest of the world is coming to Bronaber for one thing: the ultimate Snowdon holiday.
Summer is officially here, and the questions are flooding in. I’ve been lurking on Reddit and Findaquestion lately, and let’s just say there’s a lot of "ambitious" advice out there about camping in North Wales. So, I figured I’d set the record straight. Whether you’re looking for a rugged pitch for your tent or a bit of luxury in a Snowdonia Lodge, here is my personal guide to doing summer right at Rhiw Goch Inn.
The "Where to Sleep" Dilemma: Tent or Luxury?
Look, I love a tent as much as the next guy, but I also know that after eight hours of trekking up Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), a king-size bed starts to look like a gift from the gods. At Rhiw Goch Inn, we give you the best of both worlds.
1. The Campsite (For the Purists)
Our campsite isn't one of those massive, crowded holiday parks where you’re practically sleeping in your neighbor's lap. We’ve kept it intimate.
- The Stats: We have 5 electric hardstanding pitches (perfect for campervans or those who need to charge their tech) and plenty of grass space for tents.
- The View: You’re looking directly at the Rhinogydd mountains. People pay thousands for views like this in the Alps, but you get it right here in Trawsfynydd for the price of a pitch.
- Peter’s Tip: If you’re coming in June or July, book early. We’re a small site, and the "secret" of our sunset views is definitely getting out.
2. The Lodge House (For the "I Hate Pegs" Crowd)
If the idea of a tent pole makes you break out in a cold sweat, The Lodge House is your sanctuary. It’s a beautifully renovated two-story home. We’re talking underfloor heating (essential for those weirdly chilly Welsh June nights), a luxury cast iron bath for soaking those hiking muscles, and enough room for the whole family.
3. The Hideaway Bed
This is my personal favorite for couples. It’s a cozy one-bedroom apartment with a view that’s basically a postcard. It’s the perfect base for a romantic Holiday Wales getaway where the only thing you have to worry about is which bottle of wine to open while watching the sun dip behind the peaks.
Answering Your Reddit Burning Questions
I spent an hour last night reading "Snowdonia Camping Tips" threads. Here’s the "Peter Dive Version" of the most common queries.
"Can I just wild camp on Snowdon?"
The short answer: No.
The Peter answer: Technically, wild camping in Wales requires landowner permission. Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) is incredibly busy, and the National Park authorities aren't fans of people pitching up on the summit. Plus, have you seen the wind up there? You’ll wake up in Ireland. Save yourself the hassle and the potential fine. Base yourself at our campsite at LL41 4UY. You get the "wild" feel with the added bonus of a hot shower and a flat pitch.
"Is the weather really that bad in summer?"
It’s not "bad," it’s "character-building." June in Snowdonia is one of our driest months, but "dry" is a relative term here. You can start the day in a T-shirt and end it in a full gale.
- Pro Tip: Pack layers. Always. Even if the forecast says 20°C, the summit of Snowdon is usually 10 degrees colder and twice as windy.
"Where is the best base for mountain biking?"
You’re looking at it. We are literally minutes away from Coed y Brenin Forest Park. I see mountain bikers flying past the Inn every day. If you stay with us, you’re perfectly positioned to hit the trails early before the crowds arrive.

Peter’s Secret Summer Itinerary
If I weren't busy laying floorboards in the Inn, this is exactly what my perfect summer Saturday would look like:
- 08:00 AM: Breakfast at the Lodge, staring at the Rhinogydd.
- 09:30 AM: Head to Trawsfynydd Lake. It’s just down the road. You can walk the 8-mile loop around it or try some fishing. It’s way quieter than the lakes near Llanberis.
- 12:30 PM: Drive 20 minutes to the coast. Most people forget that Snowdonia is right next to some of the best beaches in the UK. Black Rock Sands is a personal favorite.
- 04:00 PM: Head back to Bronaber. If you've got the legs for it, take the path from our front door straight up into the hills. You don't need to drive to Snowdon to get a world-class hike.
- 08:00 PM: Back at Rhiw Goch Inn. Fire up the BBQ (we allow them as long as they’re off the grass!) and watch the sky turn pink.
Why Rhiw Goch Inn?
I know there are plenty of places to stay in North Wales. But here’s the thing: we aren't a corporate chain. We’re a family-run project born out of a love for this historic site. When you stay here, you’re part of the restoration story. You’ll see me around, probably covered in dust, but always happy to point you toward the best local pub or the quietest hiking trail.
We’re positioned right on the A470, making us the perfect gateway for your Snowdon holiday. You get the ease of access but the tranquility of the National Park. It’s the best of both worlds.

Ready to Book Your Summer Escape?
Don't be the person posting on Reddit on a Friday night asking where to find a last-minute pitch. Summer in Snowdonia is busy, and our spots go fast.
Head over to www.rhiwgochinn.co.uk to check availability for our campsite, The Lodge House, or The Hideaway Bed.
Whether you’re here to conquer the mountains or just to sit and watch the sheep, I can’t wait to welcome you to our little corner of Wales.
Cheers,
Peter Dive
