It’s Tuesday, the 7th of July, 2026, and I’m currently sitting on the terrace of the Rhiw Goch Inn with a steaming mug of coffee, watching the sun burn through the morning mist over the Rhinogydd mountains. As the owner of this historic slice of Welsh heaven, I see a lot of happy campers rolling into our holiday accommodation near Bronaber. But I also see a lot of "beginner blunders" that turn a dream Snowdon holiday into a soggy, midge-bitten ordeal.
I’ve been trawling through Reddit and Findaquestion lately, and it seems everyone is asking the same thing: "How do I survive a summer camping trip in North Wales without losing my mind (or my tent)?" Well, pull up a chair. Whether you’re pitching a tent or looking for a Snowdonia Lodge stay, here are the top 5 mistakes people are making this summer and how you can avoid them.
1. Falling for the "Wild Camping" Myth
I see this on Reddit all the time: people think that because Snowdonia (Eryri) is a National Park, they can just pitch up anywhere. Let me tell you, that’s a fast way to get a polite (but firm) wake-up call from a local farmer or a Park Ranger.
Most of the land here is privately owned. "Wild camping" without permission isn't just frowned upon; it can land you in a spot of bother. Plus, have you tried finding a flat, non-boggy spot at 1,000 feet in the dark? It’s not a "vibe," it’s a nightmare.

Even in the height of summer, the weather in the mountains can flip from "tropical paradise" to "Arctic monsoon" in twenty minutes. I’ve seen people arrive in Bronaber looking like they’re headed to Ibiza, only to be shivering by sunset because they didn't bring a proper waterproof.
The Fix: Pack for four seasons in one day.
- Layers: Even if it’s hot during the day, the temperature drops fast once the sun goes behind the mountains.
- Dry Bags: Put your sleeping bag and spare clothes in dry bags inside your rucksack. There is nothing more soul-destroying than a damp bed.
- Ground Insulation: Don’t just rely on an air bed; the ground will sap your heat. A proper insulated mat is worth its weight in gold.
3. The "Air Mattress of Despair" & Poor Gear Choices
Speaking of air beds… I’ve heard the "hiss" of a leaking mattress more times than I’ve heard the local sheep. People bring cheap festival tents and expect them to withstand a Snowdonia gust. Trust me, if the wind picks up near Trawsfynydd, those flimsy poles will fold like a cheap suit.
The Fix: If you’re camping, invest in a decent tent with a high "hydrostatic head" rating (that’s the fancy way of saying it’s actually waterproof). If you’re not a "roughing it" person, why suffer?

Also, midges. If you camp near water on a still evening without repellent, you’re basically a walking buffet.
