Peter Dive here. If you’ve been following our progress at the Rhiw Goch Inn, you’ll know I’ve spent more time lately with a paintbrush in my hand than a pint. We’re deep into the restoration of the old 16th-century inn, chipping away at the fire damage from 2018 to bring this Grade 2 listed beauty back to life. It’s hard work, but when the clock hits 7:00 PM and that Welsh sun starts its slow dive behind the Rhinogydd mountains, I drop the tools. There is absolutely nothing like a Snowdonia sunset.
Whether you’re staying with us in The Lodge House, tucked up in The Hideaway Bed, or pitched up at our campsite here in Bronaber, you’re perfectly placed for some of the best evening vibes in North Wales. I get asked all the time by our guests: "Peter, where's the best place to take the kids for a bite and watch the sun go down?"
Well, put your boots on. Here are my top 10 "sundowner" spots: all within an hour’s drive of our front gate at LL41 4UY: where you can grab some local grub and watch the sky turn into a masterpiece.
1. The Rhiw Goch Inn Grounds (Bronaber, LL41 4UY)
I’m biased, I know. But honestly, why leave? If you’re staying in our holiday accommodation, you’ve got a front-row seat. I often see our campers sitting out with a local cider, looking straight across the valley. The way the light hits the stone of the old Inn while we’re working on it: it’s magic.
- The Vibe: Peace, quiet, and that "I don't have to drive" feeling.
- The Grub: Fire up the BBQ at your pitch or use the kitchenette in The Hideaway.
- Pro Tip: If you're in the Hideaway, the sunset view from the stone steps is unbeatable.

2. Trawsfynydd Lake (Llyn Trawsfynydd, LL41 4UR)
Just a two-minute hop from us. You can actually walk down from Bronaber. The lake is vast, and because it’s so open, the sunset reflections on the water are world-class. It’s a great spot for a family stroll after dinner.
- The Vibe: Reflective, still, and very "Instagrammable."
- The Grub: Pack a picnic and head to the lake car park.
- Distance: 0.5 miles from Rhiw Goch Inn.
3. The Cross Foxes (Trawsfynydd, LL41 4SA)
If you want a proper village pub atmosphere, head into Trawsfynydd. The Cross Foxes is a staple for us. It’s a classic Welsh pub where the welcome is as warm as the radiators.
- The Vibe: Local, friendly, and authentic.
- The Grub: Hearty pub classics: think steak and ale pie that actually fills you up.
- Distance: 2 minutes drive.
4. The Grapes Hotel (Maentwrog, LL41 4EB)
This is one of my personal favourites. It’s a 17th-century coaching inn just down the road in the Vale of Ffestiniog. They have a lovely outdoor seating area where you can watch the light fade over the lush valley.
- The Vibe: Historic charm with a touch of elegance.
- The Grub: Their menu is excellent: lots of local Welsh produce.
- Distance: 10 minutes drive.
5. Barmouth Beach (Barmouth, LL42 1NE)
You can’t talk about sunsets in North Wales without mentioning Barmouth. It’s the classic seaside experience. The sun sets directly over the sea here, and if the tide is out, the wet sand acts like a giant mirror.
- The Vibe: Traditional seaside fun: arcades, donkeys (during the day), and salty air.
- The Grub: Grab a bag of fish and chips from The Harbour Fish Bar and sit on the sea wall.
- Distance: 30 minutes drive via the A470.

6. Harlech Castle & Beach (Harlech, LL46 2UA)
Watching the sun dip behind the silhouette of a medieval castle? Yes, please. Harlech is spectacular. You can walk the dunes as the sky turns orange, then head into the town for a bite.
- The Vibe: Epic, historic, and dramatic.
- The Grub: Check out The Castle Cottage for something a bit special, or Llew Glas for a casual deli vibe.
- Distance: 25 minutes drive.
7. Cross Foxes at Dolgellau (Dolgellau, LL40 2SG)
Not to be confused with the one in Trawsfynydd! This one sits at the foot of Cader Idris. It’s a bit more "boutique," but they’ve got a fantastic terrace. It’s the perfect spot to reward yourself after a day of mountain biking at Coed y Brenin Forest Park.
- The Vibe: Sophisticated but welcoming to hikers and bikers.
- The Grub: High-quality gastro-pub fare. Their burgers are legendary.
- Distance: 20 minutes drive.
8. Portmeirion Village (Minffordd, LL48 6ER)
If you haven’t been to Portmeirion, you’re missing out. It’s an Italianate village dropped into the middle of Wales. In the evening, the "Town Hall" area and the terrace overlooking the Dwyryd Estuary are simply surreal.
- The Vibe: Like a dream sequence. Very quiet and magical once the day-trippers leave.
- The Grub: The Terrace offers great wood-fired pizzas: perfect for the kids.
- Distance: 25 minutes drive.
9. Prince Llewelyn Hotel (Beddgelert, LL55 4YB)
Beddgelert is arguably the prettiest village in Snowdonia. The Prince Llewelyn sits right by the river. There’s something about the sound of the running water and the sun hitting the peaks of Moel Hebog that makes your beer taste better.
- The Vibe: Picturesque, riverside relaxation.
- The Grub: Solid pub food with plenty of options for fussy eaters.
- Distance: 30 minutes drive.
10. Llynnau Mymbyr (Capel Curig, LL24 0EL)
This is the "big one." If you want that iconic view of the Snowdon Horseshoe reflecting in the water at sunset, this is where you go. There isn't a pub right on the water, but Plas y Brenin is just across the road.
- The Vibe: Peak Snowdonia. Adventurous and awe-inspiring.
- The Grub: Grab a drink and a snack at the Moel Siabod Cafe nearby or the bar at Plas y Brenin.
- Distance: 45 minutes drive.
Why Stay at Rhiw Goch Inn?
I might spend my days covered in sawdust, but I wouldn't trade this life for anything. When you book a holiday in North Wales with us, you aren't just getting a room; you're getting a base for adventure. We're right on the A470, making all these spots incredibly easy to reach. Plus, after a long day of exploring, you can come back to the peace of Bronaber.
We’ve got the Lodge House for families who want a bit of luxury (that cast iron bath is calling your name), the Hideaway for couples, and our campsite with five electric pitches for those who want to be closer to nature.

Local News: The Trawsfynydd Summer Fair
Just a heads up for anyone visiting in late June 2026: the local Trawsfynydd Summer Fair is back! It’s a proper community event with local crafts, sheepdog trials, and some of the best homemade Bara Brith you’ll ever taste. It’s held just down the road from the Inn, so make sure to check it out if you're in the area.
