There is a specific kind of magic that happens in North Wales around 8:00 PM in June. The air cools down just enough to make you reach for a light jumper, the sheep in the fields finally stop their constant complaining, and the sky over the Rhinogydd mountains begins to do things with pink and orange light that honestly feel a bit like showing off.

I’m Peter Dive, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned during my time here at the Rhiw Goch Inn, it’s that a day spent exploring Snowdonia isn't truly over until you’ve got a cold glass in your hand and a front-row seat to the sunset. Whether you’ve been tackling the trails at Coed y Brenin Forest Park or hiking the giants of the national park, the "sundowner" is a non-negotiable ritual.

Lately, I’ve been hearing a lot of chatter from our guests in The Lodge House and The Hideaway about where to find the absolute best views for that final drink of the day. So, I decided to do some "research" (it’s a hard job, but someone has to drink the local ale).

Here are the 5 local pubs that everyone is talking about right now, and why they deserve a spot on your holiday North Wales itinerary.

1. Rhiw Goch Inn (The Backyard View)

Location: Bronaber, Trawsfynydd, LL41 4UY

I might be biased, but you don't actually have to leave the grounds to see the best sunset in the county. While we are currently in the middle of a massive project to restore our 16th-century Grade 2 listed inn back to its former glory as a tavern and games room, the views from our campsite and holiday apartments are legendary.

I often sit out on the picnic benches with a bottle of something local, watching the sun dip directly behind the Rhinogydd mountains. There’s something about the way the light hits the ancient stone of the Inn: even while she’s under construction: that reminds you how long people have been coming here for peace. If you’re staying with us, you’ve got the best seat in the house without needing a designated driver.

2. The Cross Foxes, Trawsfynydd

Location: Trawsfynydd, Blaenau Ffestiniog, LL41 4UY
Distance: 2 minutes from Rhiw Goch Inn

Just down the road from us in the heart of Trawsfynydd, The Cross Foxes is a staple for locals and visitors alike. It sits right near the edge of Llyn Trawsfynydd, the largest lake in the area.

During the "golden hour," the light reflects off the water in a way that’ll make you forget to check your phone. It’s a proper traditional pub: warm, welcoming, and exactly what you need after a long day of Snowdonia adventures. If you’ve spent the afternoon fishing at the lake or walking the circular path, popping in here for a pint while the sky turns purple over the water is a must.

3. The Grapes Hotel, Maentwrog

Location: Maentwrog, Blaenau Ffestiniog, LL41 4EE
Distance: 10 minutes from Rhiw Goch Inn

If you like your sunset with a side of history, The Grapes is your spot. This 17th-century coaching inn is tucked away in the Vale of Ffestiniog. Their outdoor seating area offers a stunning perspective of the lush, wooded valley.

The Grapes is famous for its food (the Sunday roasts are a local legend), but on a warm June evening, it’s all about being outside. As the sun sinks lower, the valley walls seem to glow. It’s only a short ten-minute drive from Bronaber, making it one of the easiest "out-of-office" trips you can make.

4. The Oakeley Arms Hotel, Maentwrog

Location: Tan y Bwlch, Maentwrog, LL41 4HY
Distance: 12 minutes from Rhiw Goch Inn

Located just a stone's throw from The Grapes, The Oakeley Arms sits in a prime position with sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and the Ffestiniog Railway line. If you're lucky, you might even see a vintage steam train chugging past as the sky starts to change colour.

They have a fantastic beer garden that catches the late evening light perfectly. It’s a very family-friendly spot, so if you’ve got the kids in tow after a day at the beach or exploring the local castles, this is a great place to wind down.

5. The Victoria Inn, Llanbedr

Location: Llanbedr, Gwynedd, LL45 2LD
Distance: 25 minutes from Rhiw Goch Inn

If you fancy a bit of a drive toward the coast, head over to Llanbedr. The Victoria Inn is a charming pub with a brilliant atmosphere. While it's not sitting directly on the beach, its proximity to the coast means you get that incredible, clear coastal light that you only find in West Wales.

It’s a perfect stop-off if you’ve spent the day at Shell Island or Harlech Castle. You can catch the last rays of the sun in their garden before heading back to the tranquility of Rhiw Goch Inn for a quiet night's sleep in the mountains.

Why LL41 4UY is the Ultimate Sunset Hub

A lot of people ask me why I’m so obsessed with the views here in Bronaber. It’s simple: we are perfectly positioned on the A470, giving you easy access to everything, yet we are tucked away enough to feel like you’re on the edge of the world.

When you stay at Rhiw Goch Inn, you aren't just getting a bed; you’re getting an experience. Whether you’re staying in the Lodge House with its luxury underfloor heating (perfect for those slightly chilly Welsh nights) or you’re pitched up in a tent under the stars, the landscape is the star of the show.

What’s Happening Locally?

If you’re visiting us this week, don’t forget that Coed y Brenin Forest Park is just a few miles south. It’s the UK’s first dedicated mountain bike centre and offers trails for everyone from total beginners to "I don't value my collarbones" experts.

Also, a quick heads-up: the local community in Trawsfynydd is gearing up for several summer events, so keep an eye out for posters in the local shops for agricultural shows and village fairs. There’s no better way to experience authentic Welsh culture than watching a sheepdog trial while eating a local ice cream.

Plan Your Escape

The sunsets in Snowdonia are waiting for you. Don't spend another evening staring at a screen when you could be staring at the Rhinogydd range with a cold drink in hand.

We still have some availability for the coming weeks in our self-catering apartments and our electric hook-up pitches. Come and see why everyone is talking about the views at the Rhiw Goch Inn.
