There’s a specific moment in the North Wales evening, usually right after you’ve spent the day wrestling with a mountain bike at Coed y Brenin or chasing the kids up a trail, where the air turns gold. We call it the "Gwynedd Glow." If you’re sitting on the porch of The Lodge House here at Rhiw Goch Inn (LL41 4UY), you’ll see exactly what I mean. The sun starts its slow dive behind the Rhinogydd mountains, and suddenly, that pint of local ale in your hand feels like the best decision you’ve ever made.
I’m Peter Dive, and I’ve spent more hours than I care to admit scouting the best spots for a sundowner around Bronaber and Trawsfynydd. Whether you’re staying in our holiday apartments or you’ve pitched your tent on our scenic campsite, you’re perfectly positioned.
But while I’d love for you to stay in our "backyard" all evening (and let’s be honest, with views like ours, why wouldn't you?), I know the itch to explore. So, here’s my personal "Peter-approved" guide to the best sunset pints and family-friendly chaos within an hour’s drive of our front gate.
The "Zero-Mile" Sunset: Rhiw Goch Inn, Bronaber (LL41 4UY)
I might be biased, but you really can’t beat the view from right here. Since we started renovating the old 16th-century inn (yes, it’s a work in progress since that nasty fire in 2018, but the spirit is very much alive!), I’ve made it my mission to ensure our guests have the best seats in the house.
Our campsite at Rhiw Goch is literally designed around the sunset. We’ve got five electric gravel pitches that look straight out over the valley. Even if you aren't camping, guests at The Hideaway often just sit out with a bottle of wine and watch the sky turn from orange to deep purple.

Peter’s Pro Tip: If you’re staying in the Lodge, fire up the underfloor heating, grab a glass of something cold, and head to the top-floor window. It’s the highest point in Bronaber for a reason.
Top 5 Sunset Pints within a Short Drive
If you do decide to venture out, these are the spots that get the lighting just right.
1. The Grapes Hotel, Maentwrog (LL41 3YU) – 10 Mins Away
This is a classic 17th-century coaching inn. It’s got that heavy stone-walled vibe that just screams "authentic Wales." The outdoor seating area faces the Vale of Ffestiniog, and during the "golden hour," the valley literally glows. The food is solid pub fare: massive portions of steak and ale pie that will defeat even the hungriest hiker.
- Distance: 5 miles from Bronaber.
- Best for: History buffs and big appetites.
2. The Cross Foxes, Trawsfynydd (LL41 4SE) – 5 Mins Away
Right in the heart of Trawsfynydd village. It’s a proper, no-nonsense Welsh pub. If you’ve been walking around Llyn Trawsfynydd (which you absolutely should do), this is the place to crash. They are incredibly welcoming to families and dogs, and the atmosphere is always buzzing with locals and visitors swapping stories about their Snowdonia adventures.
- Distance: 2 miles from Rhiw Goch Inn.
- Best for: A quick local pint after a lake walk.
3. Min-y-Mor Hotel, Barmouth (LL42 1AF) – 30 Mins Away
If you want the sun to actually hit the water, you need to head to the coast. Barmouth is an easy 30-minute drive down the A470. The Min-y-Mor sits right on the promenade. You can have a pint on the terrace while the kids play on the sand literally ten feet away. Watching the sun disappear into Cardigan Bay is a core memory kind of moment.
- Distance: 18 miles.
- Best for: Sea-view sunsets and sandcastles.
4. The Oakeley Arms, Maentwrog (LL41 3YU) – 10 Mins Away
Another Maentwrog gem. This place is huge, which is great if you’ve got a big family group. They have a massive beer garden where the kids can burn off their last bit of energy while you enjoy a local brew. It’s also a great stop-off point if you’re coming back from a day at the Zip World Llechwedd in Blaenau Ffestiniog.
- Distance: 6 miles.
- Best for: Large families and garden space.
5. The Last Inn, Barmouth (LL42 1EL) – 35 Mins Away
This is one of the oldest pubs in Wales, and it’s built right into the rock face. It’s quirky, it’s got a natural spring inside, and the food is top-tier. While you’re in Barmouth, it’s worth the walk over the iconic Barmouth Bridge before heading here for dinner.
- Distance: 19 miles.
- Best for: Quirky interiors and harbour vibes.
Family Fun: The "Burn Off The Energy" Checklist
Staying at Rhiw Goch Inn means you’re in the center of the action. Here are the best spots to keep the kids entertained within an hour of LL41 4UY.
Coed y Brenin Forest Park (LL40 2HZ) – 10 Mins Away
This is our "local" for mountain biking. Whether you’re a pro or you’ve still got stabilisers on, there’s a trail for you. There’s also a fantastic wooden play area and several easy walking trails that follow the river. It’s a must-visit for any outdoor enthusiast.
Yr Ysgwrn (LL41 4UW) – 5 Mins Away
Just up the road from us in Trawsfynydd. It’s the home of the famous Welsh poet Hedd Wyn. It might sound "educational," but it’s actually a beautiful, tranquil farmstead that gives you a real sense of Welsh history. The cafe there is also excellent for a midday brew.
Llandudno & The Great Orme (LL30 2XF) – 55 Mins Away
It’s just under an hour's drive, but it’s worth it for a full day out. Take the Great Orme Tramway to the top, then ride the Cable Car back down. There’s a dry ski slope for tobogganing, and the pier is everything a classic British seaside pier should be. If you’re here in June 2026, keep an eye out for the Prom Xtra festival: it’s a massive free family event on the Colwyn Bay seafront.
Portmeirion Village (LL48 6ER) – 20 Mins Away
You’ll feel like you’ve stepped into Italy. This Mediterranean-style village was built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis and is famous for being the filming location of The Prisoner. It’s got colorful buildings, hidden gardens, and a very surreal atmosphere that kids find fascinating.

Why Rhiw Goch Inn is Your Perfect Basecamp
I’ve lived in many places, but there’s something about Bronaber that keeps you grounded. When we were designing the Lodge House, we wanted it to feel like a home, not just a rental. That’s why you’ll find a luxury cast iron bath (perfect after a long hike) and that cozy underfloor heating.
For the campers, I know what you want because I’ve been there: level ground, good power, and a view that makes the morning coffee taste better. Our electric pitches are right on the edge of the park, giving you direct access to the trails heading into the hills.

Coming Soon: The Rhiw Goch Tavern
As many of you know, we are working hard on restoring the main 16th-century building. Our plan is to bring back the tavern, complete with a games room and more self-contained apartments. We want to restore the heart of Bronaber, making it the go-to spot for both locals and travelers once again. It’s a huge project, but every time I see a guest enjoying the sunset, I’m reminded why it’s worth it.
