Morning, folks! Peter Dive here. I’m currently sat on the stone wall outside the Rhiw Goch Inn, mug of coffee in hand, watching the mist burn off the Trawsfynydd lake. It’s Wednesday, the 24th of June, 2026, and if you haven’t checked the forecast yet, let me be the bearer of both good and sweaty news: it is going to be a scorcher.

We’re looking at temperatures hitting near 30°C in the valleys today. Up on the summits of Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa), it’ll be a balmy 23°C. It’s the kind of day where the slate rocks feel like frying pans and the sheep are all queuing up for whatever shade they can find. If you're staying with us here in Bronaber, you’ve picked a cracker of a week for a Snowdon holiday.

But, as any seasoned camper will tell you, a heatwave in the heart of Snowdonia National Park requires a bit more tactical planning than just throwing a sleeping bag in the back of the van. I’ve been spending some time on Reddit lately, mostly because I enjoy seeing people argue about whether a "spork" is a valid piece of equipment, and there are some recurring questions about summer camping and holiday Wales trips that I thought I’d tackle while I wait for my second brew to kick in.

1. The Reddit Burning Question: "Can I just pitch my tent anywhere?"

I see this one on r/Snowdonia all the time. Look, I get the romantic appeal of "wild camping." Waking up on a ridge, feeling like the only soul in the world… until a mountain goat tries to eat your breakfast.

The reality? In Wales, wild camping isn't strictly legal without landowner permission. And during a heatwave like this, the risk of fire is huge. My advice? Don’t risk a fine or a very awkward conversation with a local farmer at 3 AM.

We’ve specifically designed the Rhiw Goch Inn campsite to give you that "middle of nowhere" feeling without the legal headache. We have five electric pitches for the "I need my hair dryer" crowd and plenty of grass space for the purists. Plus, we’re located right in Bronaber, which means you’re perfectly positioned on the A470. You get the rugged views of the Rhinogydd mountains without having to dig a hole for your… well, you know.

2. Dealing with the "Snowdonia Air Force" (Midges)

One Redditor asked: "How bad are the midges in late June?"

My answer: On a still, humid evening like tonight is going to be, they can be a bit… enthusiastic. If you’re camping near water or in a sheltered wood, they’ll find you.

Peter’s Pro-Tip: Stay high or stay breezy. Our campsite at Rhiw Goch Inn is slightly elevated and catches the mountain breeze, which acts like a natural midge-repellent. If you are heading out, get some Smidge or Skin So Soft (the classic hiker’s secret). And for the love of all things holy, keep your tent zipped. A single midge in a tent is a tragedy; a hundred is a horror movie.

3. The "Too Hot to Tent" Pivot

I’ll be honest with you, even I have my limits. When the valley hits 30°C, a nylon tent can start feeling like a slow cooker. This morning, I walked past a couple who looked like they’d been steamed. They were looking very longingly at The Lodge House.

If you're planning a Snowdonia Lodge stay, you're playing the long game. Our Lodge House is a renovated two-story beauty with underfloor heating (great for winter, but the thick stone walls keep it surprisingly cool in the summer). If you’re a couple looking for something a bit more "boutique," The Hideaway Bed is my personal favorite. It’s got that luxury cast iron bath which is exactly what you need after a 10-mile hike in this heat.

You can check out the availability for our apartments and the lodge over at www.rhiwgochinn.co.uk. Trust me, your partner will thank you when they aren’t trying to sleep in a 40-degree sauna.

4. Master the "Peter Dive" Morning Brief (The 5-Minute Plan)

If you’re heading out from LL41 4UY today, here is your tactical 5-minute brief to survive the summer heat:

  1. Hydrate or Die-drate: (A bit dramatic, but you get it). On a day like today, carry at least 3 liters of water if you're hitting the peaks. The streams are running low, so don’t rely on finding water on the way up.
  2. The Early Bird Gets the Shade: Start your walk at 6 AM. By noon, when the sun is punishing everything that moves, you want to be heading back down or sitting in a cool pub.
  3. Coed y Brenin is your Friend: If the mountains are too hot, head into the forest. Coed y Brenin Forest Park is just down the road from us. The tree canopy provides amazing shade for mountain biking or walking.
  4. Sunblock is Non-Negotiable: The sun at 3,000 feet hits different. I’ve seen people come back looking like boiled lobsters. Don't be that guy.
  5. Park Like a Human: If you're driving to the Snowdon paths, use the Sherpa bus or book your parking at Pen-y-Pass in advance. Don't park on the verges; the local wardens are faster than Olympic sprinters with those tickets.

5. What’s Happening at the Inn?

For those who haven't visited in a while, the renovation of the main 16th-century Grade 2 listed Inn is coming along! It’s a labor of love, especially after the fire in 2018, but we’re making progress. Soon, we’ll have the tavern and games room back in action.

In the meantime, we’re focusing on making the Rhiw Goch Inn the best base for outdoor enthusiasts in North Wales. Whether you’re here for the mountain biking, the hiking, or just to sit and watch the sunset over the Rhinogydd with a cold drink, we’ve got you covered.

Why Bronaber/Trawsfynydd?

People often ask why I’m so obsessed with this specific corner of Wales. It’s the peace. Trawsfynydd has this ancient, quiet energy that you don’t get in the busier hubs like Betws-y-Coed. You can walk for hours here and not see another soul, just the mountains and the sky.

And let’s talk about the sunsets. Because we’re positioned where we are, the sun sets right over the mountains in front of the Inn. It turns the whole valley into this golden, glowing bowl. It’s the kind of thing you’d pay a fortune for in a fancy Mediterranean resort, but here it just comes with the price of a tent pitch.

Ready to book your summer escape?

Whether you want to pitch a tent under the stars or tuck yourself into the luxury of the Hideaway Bed, we’d love to have you.
