Alright, pull up a chair and let’s chat. It’s Wednesday, May 13th, 2026, and if you’re standing anywhere near the Rhiw Goch Inn right now, you’ll notice the light is starting to do that magical thing it only does in North Wales. The sky is turning a bruised purple, the Rhinogydd mountains are glowing gold, and frankly, my stomach is starting to rumble.

I get asked this all the time on Reddit and over on the "Find A Question" boards: "Peter, where can we take the kids that won't mind a bit of noise, but still gives us that epic Snowdonia sunset view?" Well, you’ve come to the right place. Being the man on the ground here at Rhiw Goch Inn, I’ve spent more than my fair share of "research hours" (don't tell Leticia) testing out the local hospitality.

Whether you’re staying in one of our luxury cottages in North Wales or you’re just passing through for the day, you need a solid plan for dinner. Here is my definitive, totally biased, but absolutely accurate guide to the best sunset pubs and family-friendly eateries within an hour's drive of LL41 4UY.

1. The Home Turf: Rhiw Goch Inn (LL41 4UY)

Let’s be real, I’d be a terrible host if I didn't start right here. If you’re looking for a holiday in North Wales, you literally cannot beat the view from our own front door.

I was sitting out there just yesterday evening with a cold pint, watching the sun dip behind the peaks. We’ve got plenty of space for the kids to run around on the grass while you keep an eye on them from the picnic tables. It’s casual, it’s historic (16th-century vibes, anyone?), and it’s the definition of a rural retreat in North Wales.

  • Address: Bronaber, Trawsfynydd, Blaenau Ffestiniog, LL41 4UY
  • Why families love it: Massive outdoor space, kids' play area, and a safe, relaxed environment where the only "traffic" is the occasional sheep.
  • The Sunset Factor: 10/10. The panoramic view of the Snowdonia National Park is second to none.

2. The Golden Fleece Inn, Tremadog (LL49 9RB)

About a 20-minute drive from us, you’ll find Tremadog. It’s a beautiful little village planned by W.A. Madocks, and sitting right in the square is the Golden Fleece Inn.

This place is a multi-award winner for a reason. They manage to balance "high-end gastro-pub" with "bring your sticky-handed toddlers" perfectly. The atmosphere is always buzzing, and the food is top-tier. I usually go for the local lamb, when in Wales, right? It's a great spot to hit after spending the day at the coast. If you’ve been following our guide to the 5 must-visit beaches in North Wales, this is the perfect pitstop on your way back to the Inn.

  • Address: 12 Market Square, Tremadog, Porthmadog, LL49 9RB
  • Why families love it: They have a really solid children’s menu that isn't just "beige food." Plus, the staff are incredibly welcoming.
  • The Sunset Factor: While you’re nestled in the village square, the light hitting the high cliffs behind Tremadog as the sun goes down is spectacular.

3. Prince Llewelyn Hotel, Beddgelert (LL55 4YB)

Beddgelert is arguably the prettiest village in Snowdonia. It’s about a 25-minute drive from our holiday rentals. The Prince Llewelyn is a classic. It’s dog-friendly, kid-friendly, and hiker-friendly.

I love coming here after a walk to Gelert’s Grave. You can sit outside and watch the world go by, or huddle inside the cozy bar if the Welsh mist has decided to make an appearance. It’s a fantastic family holiday destination in North Wales because the whole village feels like a movie set.

  • Address: Smith St, Beddgelert, Caernarfon, LL55 4YB
  • Why families love it: It’s right in the heart of the village, close to ice cream shops and the river, which provides endless entertainment for kids who like throwing stones into water (which is all of them).
  • The Sunset Factor: The sun disappearing behind the Moel Hebog mountain range creates some of the most dramatic shadows you'll ever see.

4. Snowdonia Parc Pub & Microbrewery, Waunfawr (LL55 4AQ)

Now, if you’ve got a train-obsessed child (or adult, no judgment here), this is the one. The Welsh Highland Railway actually stops right at the pub! It’s about 40 minutes from us, but well worth the trip.

They brew their own ales right on-site. I’m a big fan of their "Carmen Sutra", don’t ask, just drink it. It’s a very laid-back spot. They have a campsite vibe which means they are very used to families and groups. It’s one of those places where you can truly unwind in peace and quiet while the kids watch the steam trains chuff past.

  • Address: Waunfawr, Caernarfon, LL55 4AQ
  • Why families love it: THE TRAINS. Also, the food is hearty, unpretentious, and comes in generous portions.
  • The Sunset Factor: Set in a wide valley, you get a long, slow sunset that bathes the tracks in a golden glow.

5. Vaynol Arms, Nant Peris (LL55 4UF)

If you’ve been tackling the big peaks, the Vaynol Arms is your sanctuary. It’s about a 45-minute drive from the Inn, located right at the foot of the Llanberis Pass. It’s a traditional Welsh longhouse pub with stone floors and a massive fireplace.

I’ve had some of my favorite "post-hike" meals here. It’s rugged, it’s real, and it’s deeply connected to the climbing history of the area. It’s a great way to experience the local food and drink in an authentic setting.

  • Address: Nant Peris, Caernarfon, LL55 4UF
  • Why families love it: It’s super casual. If your kids are a bit muddy from a walk, no one is going to give you a side-eye.
  • The Sunset Factor: The way the light hits the steep walls of the Pass at sunset is nothing short of spiritual.

Breathtaking Sunset at Rhiw Goch Inn

Why Stay with Us at Rhiw Goch Inn?

I know, I know, I’ve just given you five great reasons to leave. But the best part of exploring these local gems is knowing you’re coming back to the comfort of the Rhiw Goch Inn. Whether you’re in our family-friendly cottages or the main lodge, we’ve got that "home away from home" vibe that you just don't get in a big chain hotel.

We are perfectly positioned to be your "base camp." From here, you’re less than an hour from the high peaks, the stunning coast, and the deep history of the slate quarries. If you’re looking for 10 reasons why North Wales is the perfect summer destination, just look out of our window.

Local News: What’s Happening in May?

Just a heads up for anyone visiting this week, the local Blaenau Ffestiniog mountain biking trails are in peak condition. If you’re a rider, check out our post on the best mountain biking accommodation in Wales. Also, the Ffestiniog Railway is running a full spring schedule, so make sure to book your tickets in advance!

Peter’s Pro Tips for Eating Out in Snowdonia:

  1. Book Ahead: Especially in May and through the summer. These places are popular for a reason!
  2. Check the Kitchen Times: Some of the more rural pubs stop serving food earlier than you might expect (often 8:00 PM or 8:30 PM).
  3. Bring a Layer: Even if it’s a warm day, once that sun goes down behind the mountains, the temperature drops fast.
  4. Try the Local Ale: North Wales has an incredible craft beer scene. Ask what’s on the guest tap!

So, there you have it. My top picks for a sunset meal with the family. I’m off to grab a spot on the bench outside and watch the sky turn pink. If you see me, come say hi!
