Let’s be honest: after you’ve spent six hours hauling yourself up and down Snowdon (or Eryri, as we locals call it), the last thing you want is to fight for a sticky table in a plastic-menu chain restaurant. You want a pint that tastes like victory, a plate of food that doesn't come out of a microwave, and a view that reminds you why you bothered coming to North Wales in the first place.

I’m Peter Dive, and when I’m not covered in 16th-century dust while restoring the Rhiw Goch Inn, I’m usually out testing the local hospitality. If you’re staying at our Hideaway Apartment or pitched up at our Snowdonia campsite, you’re perfectly positioned in Trawsfynydd (LL41 4UY) to reach the best "hush-hush" spots in the park.

Forget the tourist traps in the middle of Llanberis. Here are 15 of my personal favorite spots to toast your holiday in North Wales, all within an hour's drive of the Inn.

1. The Grapes Hotel, Maentwrog (10 mins away)

Address: Maentwrog, Blaenau Ffestiniog LL41 3HY
This is one of the oldest coaching inns in Wales. It’s got that heavy-beamed, "I might see a ghost" vibe that I absolutely love. It’s just down the hill from us. The beer is impeccably kept, and the garden is a sun-trap in the summer. It’s the perfect first stop after checking into The Lodge House.

2. Cell B, Blaenau Ffestiniog (15 mins away)

Address: Park Square, Blaenau Ffestiniog LL41 3AD
Want something quirky? Cell B is an old Edwardian police station turned into a cinema and bar. It’s effortlessly cool, serves great burgers, and often has live music. It’s where the "slate capital" locals go to escape the rain.

3. The Ship, Borth-y-Gest (25 mins away)

Address: Borth-y-Gest, Porthmadog LL49 9TR
Most people stop in Porthmadog. Don’t be "most people." Drive two minutes further to Borth-y-Gest. The Ship is nestled in a horseshoe bay. Grab a drink, sit outside, and watch the tide come in over the Glaslyn Estuary. It’s therapeutic.

4. Cross Foxes, Brithdir (20 mins away)

Address: Brithdir, Dolgellau LL40 2SG
If you want something a bit more "gastro," this is it. It’s right on the junction of the A470 and A487. The interiors are stunning, think slate floors and chic decor, but it still feels like a proper Welsh welcome. Great for a post-hike feast after tackling Cadair Idris.

5. The Stag, Dolwyddelan (25 mins away)

Address: Dolwyddelan LL25 0NJ
This is a proper "climber's pub." No frills, just good beer and a massive fireplace. It’s located in a stunning valley that most tourists drive straight through on their way to Betws-y-Coed. Their loss, your gain.

6. The Brondanw Arms (The Ring), Llanfrothen (20 mins away)

Address: Garreg, Llanfrothen, Penrhyndeudraeth LL48 6AQ
Locals call it "The Ring." It was part of the Brondanw estate (Sir Clough Williams-Ellis of Portmeirion fame). It’s hidden away in the trees and feels like a secret club. The food is exceptional, and the atmosphere is wonderfully eccentric.

7. Tafarn y Plu (The Feathers), Llanystumdwy (35 mins away)

Address: Llanystumdwy, Criccieth LL52 0SH
This is a community-owned pub in the village where David Lloyd George grew up. It’s steeped in history. If you want to hear the Welsh language spoken over a pint of local ale, this is the spot.

8. The George III, Penmaenpool (25 mins away)

Address: Penmaenpool, Dolgellau LL40 1YD
Located right on the edge of the Mawddach Estuary, the views here are world-class. It’s an old ship chandlery and malt house. Sitting on the deck with a gin and tonic as the sun sets over the water? That’s the peak Snowdonia experience right there.

9. The Eagle (Yr Eryr), Llanuwchllyn (25 mins away)

Address: Llanuwchllyn, Bala LL23 7UB
At the far end of Bala Lake (Llyn Tegid), you’ll find this gem. It’s a traditional Welsh-speaking pub that serves the kind of portions that would satisfy a mountain giant.

10. Y Sgwar, Tremadog (25 mins away)

Address: Market Square, Tremadog, Porthmadog LL49 9RB
Technically a bistro, but it’s the best place for a "toast" if you want high-end Welsh ingredients. The lamb here is legendary. It’s tucked away in the corner of the historic square in Tremadog.

11. The Ty Coch Inn, Porthdinllaen (55 mins away)

Address: Porthdinllaen, Morfa Nefyn, Pwllheli LL53 6DB
Okay, it’s a bit of a drive, but it’s frequently voted one of the best beach bars in the world. You have to walk across the golf course or the beach to get there. It’s the ultimate "secret" spot that everyone knows but nobody wants to leave.

12. Caffi Gwynant, Nant Gwynant (30 mins away)

Address: Bethania, Nant Gwynant, Caernarfon LL55 4NL
Not a pub, but an old chapel turned into a cafe. They serve local beers and have a fantastic terrace. It’s located right at the foot of the Watkin Path. If you’ve just come down from the summit, their homemade cakes are basically medicine.

13. The Black Boy Inn, Caernarfon (50 mins away)

Address: Northgate St, Caernarfon LL55 1RW
Located within the medieval town walls, this place dates back to 1522. It’s a labyrinth of small rooms, low ceilings, and creaky floors. It’s touristy because it’s famous, but it’s famous because it’s genuinely brilliant.

14. The Oakley Arms, Maentwrog (12 mins away)

Address: Tan-y-Bwlch, Maentwrog LL41 3YU
Right near the Ffestiniog Railway station, this place has a massive terrace overlooking the valley. It’s a great spot to watch the steam trains puffing through the trees while you enjoy a local brew.

15. Rhiw Goch Inn (0 mins away!)

Address: Bronaber, Trawsfynydd LL41 4UY
I couldn’t leave us out, could I? While the main Inn is currently under renovation (we’re bringing that 12th-century magic back to life!), the grounds are the absolute best place for a sunset drink. If you're staying in our Lodge House or camping, you get a front-row seat to the Rhinogydd mountains turning purple as the sun drops.
