Morning folks! Peter Dive here. I’m currently sitting on the bench outside the 16th-century walls of what will eventually be our restored tavern, clutching a mug of tea and watching the mist burn off the Rhinogydd mountains. It’s Wednesday, the 3rd of June, and if you aren’t in Snowdonia right now, you’re missing out on that specific kind of Welsh magic where the air smells like gorse and the sheep are finally being quiet for five minutes.

We’ve been busy here at Rhiw Goch Inn (LL41 4UY) getting everything ready for the summer rush. Lately, I’ve been spending a bit too much time lurking on Reddit and travel forums, and I’ve noticed a recurring theme. Everyone wants to know: “Should I book a Snowdonia lodge or just pitch a tent?”

It’s the ultimate North Wales dilemma. Do you want the "roughing it" badge of honour, or do you want to be able to feel your toes when you wake up? Since I run both a luxury lodge and a cracking little campsite right here in Trawsfynydd, I figured I’d weigh in with some honest advice from the front lines.

The Great Snowdonia Debate: Canvas or Cast Iron?

When you’re planning a Snowdon holiday, your choice of base camp changes everything. I’ve seen people turn up with a £20 tent from a supermarket and look like they’ve aged a decade after one rainy night. I’ve also seen people book a lodge and then spend the whole time wishing they were closer to the stars.

Here’s how to decide which side of the fence you’re on.

1. The Lodge Life: For Those Who Value Their Sanity

If you’re coming to Rhiw Goch Inn, you’ve probably seen The Lodge House. This isn’t your average "shed in a field." We’ve spent a lot of time (and sweat) renovating this two-story beauty.

  • The Comfort Factor: We’re talking underfloor heating (a godsend in June when the Welsh weather decides to throw a tantrum), a king-size bed that actually supports your back, and a luxury cast iron bath. After hiking up Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), trust me, that bath is better than a lottery win.
  • The "Hideaway" Vibe: For couples, we’ve got The Hideaway Bed. It’s a cozy one-bedroom apartment with views of the sunset that’ll make you want to propose all over again (or at least take a really good Instagram photo).
  • Why choose a lodge? You’re 100% weather-proof. If it rains: and let’s be real, it’s Wales: you can just crack open a bottle of wine and watch the clouds roll over the mountains from behind a double-glazed window.

2. The Camping Experience: For the True Adventurers

On the flip side, we have our Snowdonia campsite. We’ve kept it intimate: five electric hardstanding pitches and plenty of space for tents.

  • Location, Location, Location: We are perfectly positioned right on the A470. It’s easy to get to, but once you’re here, you’re surrounded by nothing but tranquility and the occasional owl.
  • The View: There is something special about unziping your tent and seeing the mountains right there. In June, the days are long: light until 10 pm: which means more time for campfires and storytelling.
  • The Community: Campers are the best. You’ll meet mountain bikers heading to Coed y Brenin Forest Park (just a short hop from us) and hikers comparing notes on the best routes up Snowdon.

Answering Your Reddit Questions (The Stuff You Actually Care About)

I see these questions pop up every week on r/Snowdonia and r/UKHiking. Here’s the "Peter Dive" take on the most common worries:

"How bad are the midges in June?"

Honestly? They aren't as bad as Scotland, but they are here. If it’s a still, damp evening, they’ll find you. Lodge Tip: You can just close the door. Camping Tip: Bring "Smidge" repellent and keep a breeze going if you can. Our site is quite open, which helps keep the little blighters away compared to being stuck deep in a wooded valley.

"Is it worth the price difference?"

Look, a holiday in Wales on a budget usually means a tent. But if you’re a family of four, by the time you buy all the gear, the airbeds that inevitably leak, and the stove that won’t light, The Lodge House starts looking like a bargain. Plus, you get a kitchen. Saving money on eating out means more money for local ale!

"What if the weather turns?"

June is usually our driest month, but "dry" in Snowdonia is a relative term. If you’re camping, bring a 3-season tent. If you’re in our lodge, you won't care. We’ve had guests stay in the lodge during a storm and they said it was the highlight of their trip: super cozy with the heating on while the wind howls outside.

Why Rhiw Goch Inn is Your Best Bet (Self-Promotion Alert!)

Whether you choose the lodge or the tent, you’re staying at a site with history dating back to the 12th century. We are currently in the middle of a massive project: restoring our 16th-century Grade 2 listed inn. It was gutted by fire in 2018, but we’re bringing it back to life. Soon, it’ll be a tavern with a games room and even more apartments.

Staying here means you’re supporting the restoration of a piece of Welsh history. Plus, you get to talk to me, and I’ve been told I’m quite charming after my second coffee.

  2. Hiking Yr Wyddfa / Snowdon (25-30 mins): Multiple paths are within easy reach.
  3. The Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railway (15 mins): For when your legs need a rest but you still want the views.
  4. Llechwedd Slate Caverns (20 mins): Perfect for a rainy day (see, I told you to have a backup plan).
  5. Local Pubs: There are some crackers nearby in Trawsfynydd and Gellilydan for a proper Welsh pint.

The Verdict: Lodge or Tent?

  • Choose the Lodge if: You want luxury, you have kids, you’re celebrating something special, or you simply hate the idea of a damp sleeping bag. Book The Lodge House or The Hideaway at www.rhiwgochinn.co.uk.
  • Choose Camping if: You’re here for the raw adventure, you’re on a budget, or you want to be the first one on the trails at 5 am. Check out our campsite availability here.

Whatever you choose, just get yourself down here to North Wales. The mountains are waiting, the sunsets are legendary, and I’ve got the kettle on.

See you at the Inn,
