Morning, everyone. Peter here.
I’m currently sat on the porch of the Lodge House with a brew that’s probably 80% caffeine, watching the mist roll off the Rhinogydd mountains. It’s one of those quiet North Wales mornings where the only sound is a sheep having a mid-life crisis in the far field and the distant hum of the A470 waking up.
If you’ve been scrolling through Reddit or lurking on Findaquestion lately, you’ll know that "Summer in Snowdonia" usually conjures up images of a mile-long queue for the summit of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) and car parks that fill up before most people have even found their left boot.
But here’s the thing: it doesn't have to be like that. Living here at Rhiw Goch Inn, I’ve learned the secrets to enjoying the peak season without feeling like you're in the middle of a London Underground commute. So, grab a coffee, and let’s talk about how to do Snowdonia lodge living the right way.
The "Crowd Crisis": Why Everyone Goes to the Same Three Places
It’s no secret, Snowdonia is popular. In July and August, Snowdon itself sees over 100,000 visitors. On a sunny Saturday, you’re looking at 4,000 people all trying to touch the same cairn at the same time.
The biggest mistake people make? They stay in the "honeypot" towns like Llanberis or Betws-y-Coed and then wonder why they can’t find a parking space.
At Rhiw Goch, we’re perfectly positioned in Trawsfynydd (LL41 4UY). We’re right on the A470, which makes us easy to get to, but we’re tucked away enough that you get the "Wild West" feel of the park. From here, you’re looking at the Rhinogydd range, some of the most rugged and quietest mountains in the UK. While everyone else is elbowing their way up the Pyg Track, our guests are often the only ones on the hills behind the Inn.

Lodge Living vs. The Wild Camp: Peter’s Take
One of the most frequent questions I see online is: "Lodge or Camping? I want the views but I also want a hot shower."
Look, I love a tent as much as the next man, but there’s something special about returning to a luxury lodge after a 10-mile hike. Here’s how we break it down at Rhiw Goch:
1. The Lodge House (The "I'm Done with Roughing It" Choice)
This is our flagship. It’s a two-story, beautifully renovated home. I’m particularly proud of the underfloor heating, there is nothing, and I mean nothing, better than coming in from a rainy Welsh afternoon and feeling that warmth on your feet. It’s got a king-size bed that’s basically a cloud, and a luxury cast iron bath that’s seen more "recovery soaks" than a professional rugby team.
- Best for: Families or couples who want a base that feels like a home, not just a room.
- Check it out: The Lodge House at Rhiw Goch
2. The Hideaway Bed (The "Sunset & Chill" Choice)
If you’re looking for a cozy one-bedroom spot, this is it. It’s an apartment that faces west, meaning you get front-row seats to the sunset over the Rhinogydd. I’ve spent many evenings watching the sky turn purple from here, and it never gets old.
- Best for: Couples on a romantic getaway or solo hikers looking for a quiet retreat.

3. The Rhiw Goch Campsite (The "Purist's" Choice)
For those who want to be as close to nature as possible, we’ve got 5 electric pitches and plenty of space for tents. You wake up, unzip the door, and the mountains are right there. No traffic, no city lights, just the Milky Way and the sound of the wind.

Answering Your Reddit Questions: Snowdonia Summer Edition
I spent some time yesterday trawling through the North Wales subreddits to see what you lot are actually worried about. Here are my first-hand answers:
Q: "Is August on Snowdon unbearable?"
Peter's Take: If you take the Llanberis Path at 11 AM on a Saturday? Yes, it’s a conga line. But if you’re staying with us, you can drive to the Rhyd Ddu or Snowdon Ranger paths in about 20 minutes. These are the "quiet side" of the mountain. Better yet, go on a Tuesday at 6 AM. You’ll have the summit to yourself while everyone else is still debating whether to have a full Welsh breakfast.
Q: "Where can I hike near Trawsfynydd that isn't crowded?"
Peter's Take: Walk right out of our gate. The Llyn Trawsfynydd lake loop is fantastic. It’s about 8 miles of flat-ish terrain with incredible views. If you want a challenge, head into the Rhinogydd. It’s rugged, rocky, and you likely won't see another soul. Just make sure you have a map; the paths there like to play hide and seek.
Q: "Is the Rhiw Goch Inn open for a pint yet?"
Peter's Take: We’re working on it! As many of you know, our 16th-century Grade 2 listed Inn was badly damaged by fire in 2018. We are currently in the middle of a massive restoration project to bring it back to its former glory as a tavern and games room. For now, we are fully focused on our high-end holiday lets and campsite, but the dream of a pint by the fire is getting closer every day. You can read about our history here.
The Local’s List: Top 3 Things to Do Near LL41 4UY
If you’re staying at our Snowdonia Lodge, don’t just stick to the guidebooks. Here are three spots within a 15-minute drive that I personally love:
- Cwmorthin (Blaenau Ffestiniog): Just up the road. It’s an old slate quarry valley that feels like a film set from Lord of the Rings. It’s atmospheric, slightly eerie, and utterly beautiful.
- Coed y Brenin Forest Park: If you brought your bike, this is your mecca. It’s just down the A470. World-class mountain biking trails and some lovely walking paths for those of us who prefer to keep both wheels (or feet) on the ground.
- Llyn Trawsfynydd Footbridge: Park on the south side of the lake. There’s a narrow bridge that crosses the water. It’s the perfect spot for a bit of photography or just a quiet moment to realize that, yes, Wales is actually this pretty.

Why Rhiw Goch?
Leticia and I have put our hearts into this place. We didn't want to create another generic holiday park. We wanted to preserve the history of this site, which dates back to the 12th century, while offering the kind of luxury we’d want when we travel.
Whether you’re a mountain biker looking for a place to wash your gear and crash, or a family looking for a "Snowdon holiday" that doesn't involve fighting for a parking spot, we’ve got you covered.
Ready to ditch the crowds and experience the real Snowdonia?
Book your stay at www.rhiwgochinn.co.uk. We’ve still got some summer availability for the campsite and the Hideaway Bed, but the Lodge House fills up fast!
See you on the hills,
