Listen, I’ve spent more hours than I care to admit with a hammer in one hand and a local ale in the other lately. Between restoring the 16th-century stone walls of our beloved Rhiw Goch Inn (it’s coming along, I promise!) and making sure our guests in The Lodge House and The Hideaway are cozy, I’ve become a bit of a self-appointed expert on where to go when the sun starts dipping behind the Rhinogydd mountains.

If you’re planning your holiday in North Wales, you aren't just here for the (admittedly spectacular) sleep. You’re here to conquer a peak, get mud on your boots at Coed y Brenin, and then find somewhere that won't give you "the look" when you walk in with a tired toddler and a trail-worn dog.

It’s June 6th, the gorse is yellow, the air is sweet, and the Snowdonia (or Eryri, as we like to call it) trails are calling. Here is my personal, tried-and-tested guide to the best post-hike pints and family spots within a stone’s throw of our front door at LL41 4UY.

1. The "Right on the Doorstep" Pint: The Bryn Arms (Bronaber)

Location: Bronaber, Trawsfynydd, LL41 4UY
Distance from Rhiw Goch Inn: Literally a 2-minute walk.

I’ll be honest: sometimes after a day of renovation work, I don’t want to drive anywhere. The Bryn Arms is our local hero. It’s exactly what you want from a pub during your holiday in North Wales: unpretentious, friendly, and they have a massive outdoor space.

On Reddit, people are always asking, "Where can I take the kids where they won't get bored while I have a beer?" This is the place. They have a solid kids' play area, meaning you can actually finish a conversation while the little ones burn off that last bit of "holiday energy." The views of the mountains from the beer garden are top-tier, especially when that June sun starts to set.

2. The Lakeside Stretch: Llyn Trawsfynydd & Canolfan Prysor

Location: Trawsfynydd, LL41 4DT
Distance: 5 minutes drive.

Before you hit the pub, you might want a "cool down" walk. Llyn Trawsfynydd is a stunning reservoir just down the road. It’s perfect for a flat, stroller-friendly walk or a family bike ride.

The Canolfan Prysor Café is a hidden gem. It’s got free parking (a rarity in some parts of the park!) and the food is genuinely good value. I usually grab a coffee and a slice of cake there and just stare at the water. If you’re staying at our campsite, this is the easiest "nature fix" you'll find.

3. The Foodie’s Choice: The Grapes Hotel (Maentwrog)

Location: Maentwrog, LL41 3HY
Distance: 12 minutes drive.

If you’re looking for something a bit more "gastro" but still deeply traditional, head over to Maentwrog. The Grapes Hotel is a 17th-century coaching inn that feels like stepping back in time: but with a much better wine list.

The food here is fantastic. Whether it's a local lamb dish or a proper Sunday roast, they don't mess around. It’s a great spot to hit after you’ve spent the morning exploring the nearby Oak woods or waterfalls. It’s also very dog-friendly, which is a question I see popping up on Findaquestion all the time.

4. The "Steam and Slate" Adventure: Ffestiniog Railway

Location: Blaenau Ffestiniog, LL41 3ES
Distance: 15 minutes drive.

You haven’t truly experienced Snowdonia until you’ve heard the whistle of a steam train echoing through the valley. Blaenau Ffestiniog is just up the road, and the Ffestiniog Railway is world-famous for a reason.

It’s the ultimate family attraction in North Wales. You can hop on at Blaenau and ride down to the coast at Porthmadog. The kids love the smoke and the tiny carriages, and for us adults, the engineering and the views are just mind-blowing.

Pro Tip: If you're heading that way next week (June 11-14), keep in mind that the Gottwood Festival is happening over on Anglesey. While it’s about an hour away, the area gets a bit busier with "cool kids" in glitter, so book your train tickets or dinner tables in advance!

5. Castles and Ice Cream: Harlech

Location: Harlech, LL46 2YH
Distance: 25 minutes drive.

When the kids have had enough of mountains, take them to the sea. Harlech Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage site and it is properly imposing. It’s got that "built into the rock" look that makes every child (and me, let's be fair) want to play knights and dragons.

After you’ve climbed the battlements, head down to Harlech Beach. It’s huge, sandy, and perfect for a picnic. If you’re lucky, you might even see the famous "Enlli" sunset. If not, don't worry: the sunsets back here at Rhiw Goch Inn are just as legendary.

6. The "Italian" Escape: Portmeirion

Location: Minffordd, Penrhyndeudraeth, LL48 6ER
Distance: 20 minutes drive.

If you want to feel like you’ve accidentally driven into a Mediterranean village, Portmeirion is your spot. Designed by Clough Williams-Ellis, it’s a colorful, surreal, and beautiful place to wander. It’s great for a family day out because there are no cars, plenty of woodland walks, and some great gelato.

Why We Love It Here (and why you will too)

People often ask me, "Peter, why did you buy a fire-damaged inn in the middle of a national park?"

Honestly? Just look at the views. As I sit here writing this, looking out from our campsite, the light over the Rhinogydd mountains is doing that thing where it turns everything purple and gold.

Whether you’re staying in our luxury Lodge House with its underfloor heating (perfect for drying out those hiking socks!) or you're pitched up in a tent under the stars, there’s a peace here you just don't get elsewhere.

We’re perfectly positioned on the A470, so while you feel miles away from the world, you’re actually within an hour of everything that makes North Wales great: from the zip lines of Blaenau to the quiet beaches of the coast.

Peter’s Checklist for a Perfect Evening:

  1. A quick walk around the Rhiw Goch grounds to spot the local wildlife (we have plenty).
  2. A drive to Maentwrog for a "posh" dinner at The Grapes.
  3. A nightcap back at your lodge or tent, watching the stars. Since we're in a Dark Sky Reserve area, the constellations are so bright they look like they’re shouting at you.
