Morning everyone! Peter Dive here. I’m currently sat at the Rhiw Goch Inn (LL41 4UY) with a steaming mug of coffee, watching the mist roll off the Rhinogydd mountains. It’s a cracker of a Thursday, and with summer fast approaching, I’ve been spending a bit too much time lurking on Reddit and Findaquestion.
You see, I keep seeing the same panic-stricken posts: "Help! Everything near Snowdon is booked!" or "Is it safe to hike Snowdon in trainers?" (Spoiler: No, it really isn't). It breaks my heart because a Snowdon holiday should be about fresh air, cold pints, and views that make you feel like you’re in a Lord of the Rings movie, not stress and logistical nightmares.
If you’re planning your trip to North Wales right now, you might be making some classic blunders. Don’t worry, I’ve made half of them myself back in the day. Here are the 7 biggest mistakes I see people making with their Snowdon holiday search, and exactly how we’re going to fix them so you can actually enjoy your summer.
1. The "Llanberis or Bust" Blindness
The biggest mistake? Thinking that if you aren't staying in the village of Llanberis, you aren't "doing" Snowdon. Look, I love Llanberis, but in July and August, it’s basically a car park with better scenery. If you search only for accommodation in the immediate shadow of the peak, you’re going to find high prices and zero availability.
The Fix: Broaden your horizon. If you stay slightly further out, say, 20 minutes down the road at our place in Trawsfynydd, you get the peace, the quiet, and a much better price point. Plus, you aren't fighting for a spot to eat your dinner. Our Snowdonia Lodge options give you that "base camp" feel without the tourist-trap chaos.

2. Thinking the Summit Cafe is a Guarantee
I see this on Reddit all the time: "I'll just grab a pasty at the top." Listen, the Hafod Eryri (the summit visitor centre) is great, but it’s weather-dependent and can be shut even if the sun is shining at the bottom. Also, the queues for a coffee can be longer than the hike itself!
The Fix: Pack like a pro. Treat your Snowdon holiday like a proper expedition. Bring more water than you think you need and plenty of high-energy snacks. Then, when you get back down to the Rhiw Goch Inn, you can celebrate with a proper meal and a local ale. Check out our guide to local food and drink for what to look forward to after your descent.
3. Ignoring the Parking "Hunger Games"
If you think you can just rock up to Pen-y-Pass at 10:00 AM on a Saturday in August, I’ve got a bridge to sell you. The parking fills up before most of you have even hit the snooze button on your alarm. People get fined, cars get towed, and holidays get ruined before the first hill is climbed.
The Fix: Use the Sherpa'r Wyddfa bus service. It’s a lifesaver. Park in the surrounding villages (or better yet, leave your car at your accommodation) and let the bus drop you at the trailhead. It’s cheaper, greener, and saves you a massive headache. If you’re staying at our holiday rentals, ask me about the best local spots to leave the car.

4. Only Searching for "Hotels"
When people search for a Holiday Wales experience, they often default to hotels. In Snowdonia, that’s a mistake. You miss out on the best part of being here: the connection to the landscape.
The Fix: Look for self-catering lodges or high-end campsites. There’s something special about waking up, opening your door, and seeing the Rhinogydd mountains right there. Whether you’re into luxury cottages or a pitch-perfect campsite, you want the flexibility to cook your own breakfast or have a midnight BBQ under the stars.

5. Underestimating the "Other" Snowdonia
Don't get me wrong, Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) is the big draw, but if you spend your whole week focused on just one mountain, you’re missing out on 90% of the magic. The Reddit threads are full of people complaining about how crowded the paths are.
The Fix: Explore the surrounding areas. The Rhinogydd range (which we overlook here at the Inn) is rugged, wild, and you’ll often be the only person on the trail. If you have kids, check out these 10 family attractions that aren't mountain-related. There’s more to a Snowdon holiday than just hitting the summit.
6. The "Summer Means Sun" Fallacy
This is the one that gets the mountain rescue teams working overtime. Just because it’s 20 degrees and sunny at the Rhiw Goch Inn doesn't mean it isn't 5 degrees with 40mph winds at the summit. The weather here changes faster than I can change a beer keg.
The Fix: Layering is your best friend. Even in summer, bring a waterproof shell and a warm layer. And for the love of all things Welsh, check the Mountain Weather Forecast specifically. If you want to unwind in peace and quiet, it helps if you aren't soaking wet and shivering!

7. Not Having a "Base Camp" Strategy
I see people booking three different places for a six-day trip. They spend half their holiday packing and unpacking the car. It’s exhausting.
The Fix: Pick a central "hub." Our location at LL41 4UY is the perfect middle ground. You’re close enough to Snowdon for the big hike, but also perfectly placed for the beaches of the Llyn Peninsula and the mountain biking trails of Coed y Brenin. We’re basically the family oasis you’ve been looking for.

Why Rhiw Goch Inn is the Answer to Your Search
I might be biased, but I've lived here long enough to know what works. When you book a stay at Rhiw Goch Inn, you aren't just getting a bed; you’re getting the local "Peter Dive" seal of approval. Whether you want to pitch a tent and watch the sunset over the mountains or tuck yourselves into one of our renovated stone holiday apartments, we've got you covered.
Our grounds are designed for relaxation. After a day of fighting the crowds on the Pyg Track, there is nothing: and I mean nothing: better than sitting out on our manicured lawns with a cold drink, looking out at the very mountains you just conquered.
