It’s Friday evening here at the Rhiw Goch Inn (Bronaber, Trawsfynydd, LL41 4UY), and as the sun begins to dip behind the Rhinogydd mountains, I’ve found myself in my favourite position: glass of local ale in one hand, a pen in the other, and a view that honestly makes me wonder why anyone bothers living anywhere else.

If you’re reading this, you’re likely planning a holiday in North Wales or you're already here, looking for the inside scoop on where to find the best pint, the crunchiest chips, and the kind of family adventures that actually keep the kids quiet for more than five minutes. Being the man on the ground (and occasionally behind the bar), I’ve taken it upon myself to curate the ultimate local’s guide. Everything here is within an hour’s drive of our front door at LL41 4UY.

Let’s dive in.

1. The Home Base: Rhiw Goch Inn (LL41 4UY)

I might be biased, but you can’t talk about the best of Snowdonia without starting right here. The Rhiw Goch Inn isn't just a pub; it’s a 16th-century piece of history. Whether you are staying in our holiday apartments or pitching a tent at our Snowdonia campsite, the atmosphere on a Friday night is unbeatable.

We’ve got the log fires roaring if the evening chill sets in, and a beer garden that boasts what I firmly believe is the best sunset view in the UK. Seriously, bring your camera. If you're looking for a family holiday in Wales, we’ve got plenty of space for the little ones to run wild while you enjoy a Trevethan Cornish Gin.

2. The Pub That Requires a Tide Table: Ty Coch Inn (LL53 6DB)

Distance from LL41 4UY: ~55 minutes.
Address: Porthdinllaen, Morfa Nefyn, Pwllheli LL53 6DB.

This is the stuff of legend. The Ty Coch Inn is consistently voted one of the best beach bars in the world. The catch? You can’t drive to it. You have to park up at the golf club and walk across the sand at low tide or take the cliff path. It’s a bit of a trek, but once you’re sitting on the sea wall with a cold beer, watching the waves roll in, you’ll understand the hype. It’s perfect for a family afternoon out: the kids can dig in the sand while you ponder the meaning of life (or just what to order for dinner).

3. The Culinary Gem: Ty Gwyn Hotel (LL24 0SG)

Distance from LL41 4UY: ~25 minutes.
Address: Betws-y-Coed, LL24 0SG.

If you’re heading towards Betws-y-Coed, you have to stop at the Ty Gwyn. It’s a historic coaching inn that feels like stepping back in time. Their evening meals are spectacular: think local Welsh lamb and seasonal produce that actually tastes of something. It’s a bit more "refined" than your average pub grub, making it a great spot for a celebratory dinner during your Snowdonia trip.

4. For the Adventurous Families: Coed y Brenin (LL40 2HZ)

Distance from LL41 4UY: ~15 minutes.
Address: Ganllwyd, Dolgellau LL40 2HZ.

Just down the road from us is the world-famous Coed y Brenin Forest Park. If you follow local news, you’ll know their "Wednesday Night Mountain Biking" sessions are the stuff of local legend. Even if you aren't a pro-biker, they have fantastic walking trails and an "Animal Puzzle Trail" that is a huge hit with younger kids.

After you’ve worked up an appetite, head back towards Trawsfynydd. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch one of our Saturday Sunset Yoga sessions nearby, which is a great way to stretch out those mountain-bike-weary muscles.

5. The "Time Capsule" Pub: The Eagle Inn (LL23 7TW)

Distance from LL41 4UY: ~25 minutes.
Address: Llanuwchllyn, Bala LL23 7TW.

I love the Eagle Inn. It’s a proper, old-school Welsh pub. If you want to hear the local language being spoken and hear some genuine stories (and maybe a ghost story or two if you catch the regulars at the right time), this is the place. It’s unpretentious, warm, and serves a cracking pint of local bitter.

6. Sweet Treats and Sunsets: Glaslyn Ice Cream (LL49 9LU)

Distance from LL49 9LU: ~25 minutes.
Address: High St, Porthmadog LL49 9LU.

You can’t have a holiday in North Wales without ice cream, regardless of the weather. Glaslyn in Porthmadog is an institution. During the summer months, they often run "Sunset Specials." Grab a double scoop of honeycomb and wander down to the harbour to watch the boats come in. It’s a simple pleasure, but it’s one of my favourite things to do on a Friday evening.

7. The Hidden Valley: Fairy Glen (LL24 0RW)

Distance from LL41 4UY: ~20 minutes.
Address: Betws-y-Coed LL24 0RW.

If you want to feel like you’ve stepped into a fantasy novel, head to the Fairy Glen (Ffos Anoddun). It’s a secluded gorge on the Conwy River. In the evening light, the way the sun hits the moss-covered rocks is magical. It’s a short walk from the road, making it accessible for families, though keep a tight grip on the little ones near the water!

Why LL41 4UY is the Perfect Hub

When I first took over things here at the Inn, I realized that Trawsfynydd is the geographical heart of North Wales. We are perfectly positioned between the high peaks of Snowdon and the golden sands of the Llŷn Peninsula.

Staying at the Rhiw Goch Inn means you aren't stuck in one place. You’re within striking distance of:

  • Blaenau Ffestiniog: For Zip World and underground trampolining.
  • Portmeirion: The famous Italianate village (a 20-minute drive).
  • Bala Lake: For kayaking and sailing.

We get asked a lot on Reddit and travel forums: "Where is the best place to stay for an active holiday in North Wales?" My answer is always the same. You want somewhere with a warm bed, a cold beer, and a road that leads in every direction.

Local's Tip: The "Pub Ride"

During the summer, we often see groups participating in "Pub Rides": guided cycle tours that end at a local establishment. If you’re staying at our campsite, ask me about the best routes. There’s nothing quite like earning your burger by pedalling through the Snowdonia lanes first.

Plan Your Visit

If you’re looking to escape the madness of the city, come and see us. We’ve got plenty of room, whether you’re looking for a luxury lodge or a spot to park your campervan.

Quick Checklist for your Friday Night near Trawsfynydd:

  1. Check the tide times (if heading to Ty Coch).
  2. Book a table if you’re heading to Ty Gwyn: it gets busy!
  3. Pack a headtorch: Snowdonia is a Dark Sky Reserve, and it gets properly dark out here.
  4. Download a Welsh phrasebook: even a simple "Diolch" (Thank you) goes a long way with the locals.

We’re constantly updating our News and Updates section with local event info, so keep an eye out for upcoming folk sessions and beer festivals.

Final Thoughts from Peter

There’s something about a Friday night in Wales that just hits different. The air is cleaner, the beer is colder, and the stories are taller. Whether you’re here for the hiking, the history, or just to hide away from your emails, the Rhiw Goch Inn is waiting for you.
