Morning, everyone. Peter Dive here. It’s Monday, the 18th of May, and the sun is finally deciding to show its face over the Rhinogydd mountains. I’m currently sitting with a steaming mug of coffee, watching the sheep in the lower paddock pretend they aren't planning a daring escape.

Last night, I fell down a bit of a Reddit rabbit hole. I was browsing the r/Snowdonia and r/Wales subreddits, and I saw the same questions popping up over and over: "Where can I camp that isn't a crowded festival vibe?", "Are there any Snowdonia lodge options that don't cost a literal kidney?", and my personal favourite, "Will I get eaten by midges if I sleep in a tent near Trawsfynydd?"

Since I spend most of my time here at Rhiw Goch Inn, I figured it was time to put my local knowledge to good use. Whether you’re a hard-core van-lifer or someone who thinks "roughing it" means a hotel without room service, this is your definitive guide to a summer stay in our little corner of Eryri.

The "Local’s Secret" Vibe

Look, I’ll be honest with you. Most people driving the A470 are heading for the big-ticket names like Betws-y-Coed or the base of Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa). They zoom right past Bronaber. But that’s their loss and your gain.

Rhiw Goch Inn isn't a shiny, corporate resort. We’re a bit wild, very historic, and arguably have the best sunset views in North Wales. We are located at Trawsfynydd, Blaenau Ffestiniog, LL41 4UY, right in the heart of the National Park. If you want a Snowdon holiday that feels authentic rather than processed, you’ve found the right spot.

Camping at Rhiw Goch: Tents, Vans, and Views

If you’re looking for a campsite in Snowdonia, you need to decide what matters more: a heated swimming pool or a view that makes you forget your phone exists. We offer the latter.

We have a mix of options. For those who need a bit of juice for their campervan or caravan, we’ve got five hardstanding gravel pitches with electric hook-up. If you’re a traditionalist with a tent and a dream, we have space for about ten tents in the main area.

Peter’s Pro Tips for Campers:

  1. Booking: You can find us on Pitchup for the main slots, but here’s a secret, if Pitchup says we’re full, give us a shout directly. Sometimes we have extra grass spots or hardstanding areas tucked away that aren't on the app.
  2. The Dark Skies: We are in a Dark Sky Reserve area. Once the sun goes down, it is properly dark. Bring a headlamp or a decent torch. Don't be that person trying to find the toilet block using their phone’s dying flashlight.
  3. The Wind: You’re in the mountains. Even in July, a breeze can turn into a "why is my tent sideways?" gale in twenty minutes. Use your guy ropes.
  4. Dogs: We love them. Bring them. Just keep them on a lead because the local sheep are much faster than they look, and they don't appreciate being chased.

Lodge Life: Comfort in the Wild

Not everyone wants to wake up with a tent pole in their ear. I get it. If you’re searching for a Snowdonia lodge that feels more like a home and less like a plastic box, we have two very distinct options.

1. The Lodge House

This is the big one. It’s a traditional old house that we’ve lovingly converted into a cosy retreat. It’s got underfloor heating (a godsend even in a Welsh summer), a king-size bed, and a cast-iron bath that is basically a spiritual experience after a long hike. The living area is upstairs to make the most of those mountain views. It’s perfect for families looking for a family holiday in Wales.

2. The “Hideaway” Lodge

This one is my personal favourite. It’s tucked away behind a small door and up some old stone steps. It feels like a secret club. It’s a studio-style space sitting right above the arch of the old building. If you’re on a romantic getaway or a solo mission to write the next great British novel, this is the spot. The window looks straight out toward the Rhinogydd.

You can check out the Lodge details here to see which one fits your vibe.

Answering the "Reddit" Questions

"Is the pub actually open?"
This is the question I get most often. As many of you know, a fire in 2018 did a real number on the old 16th-century building. Since 2022, the new owners have been working tirelessly to bring it back. Currently, the focus is on the holiday apartments and the campsite. The tavern is a work in progress.

Peter’s advice: Don't arrive expecting a 3-course gastro-pub meal every night just yet. Think of us as a magnificent base camp. We have local spots nearby for food, or better yet, fire up a BBQ (raised off the ground, please!) and enjoy the scenery.

"What is there to do within an hour's drive?"
Staying at Rhiw Goch Inn (LL41 4UY) puts you in a strategic "sweet spot." Here’s the 60-minute radius hit list:

  • Coed y Brenin Forest Park (10 mins): If you like mountain biking, this is your Mecca. You can actually bike there from our site without hitting the main road.
  • Llyn Trawsfynydd (5 mins): Stunning lake walks. It’s much quieter than Llyn Padarn in Llanberis.
  • Harlech Beach (30 mins): A massive sandy beach and a castle that looks like it belongs in Game of Thrones.
  • Blaenau Ffestiniog (15 mins): Home to Zip World and the slate caverns. It’s gritty, historic, and brilliant.
  • Portmeirion (25 mins): An Italianate village in the middle of Wales. It’s weird, colourful, and a great day out.

Summer Survival Tips (The No-Nonsense Version)

If you're planning a Holiday Wales trip this summer, you need to be prepared. Mother Nature in Snowdonia is beautiful, but she’s also a bit temperamental.

  • The Midge Situation: People worry about this on Reddit. Yes, if it’s a still, damp evening, the midges might come out to say hello. Bring some Smidge or Avon Skin So Soft (the local's secret weapon).
  • Layers are Life: I’ve seen it go from 25°C at noon to a chilly 10°C by 8 PM. Bring a hoodie even if the forecast says "heatwave."
  • Book Your Activities: If you want to go on the Ffestiniog Railway or do a Zip Line, book them now. Summer in North Wales gets busy, and "showing up and hoping for the best" usually ends in disappointment.

Why Rhiw Goch?

People ask me why I love it here. It’s the peace. In the height of summer, when the car parks at the foot of Snowdon are overflowing and people are queuing to take a selfie at the summit, Rhiw Goch stays calm.

You can sit on the grass with a cold drink, watch the light change on the hills, and actually hear yourself think. It’s a place to reset. Whether you are staying in the historic Lodge or pitching a tent under the stars, you’re getting a slice of the real Wales.
