Pull up a chair, grab a cold one, and let me tell you a secret: there is no place on Earth like Snowdonia (or Eryri, as we locals call it) when the sun starts its slow dip toward the Irish Sea. It’s Monday, the 18th of May, and out here at the Rhiw Goch Inn, the air is finally losing that winter bite, replaced by the scent of gorse and the promise of a long, golden summer.
I’m Peter Dive, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned while running this 16th-century beauty of an inn, it’s that people come for the mountains but stay for the vibes. Whether you’re here for a family holiday in Wales or you’re a solo hiker looking for the ultimate "sundowner" (that’s a fancy word for a drink at sunset, for the uninitiated), I’ve got the inside scoop on where to go.
We’re based in Trawsfynydd (LL41 4UY), and let me tell you, we are smack-bang in the middle of everything. You don't need to spend five hours climbing Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) to get a view that’ll make your Instagram followers weep with envy. Here is my personal guide to the best spots within an hour of our front door.
1. The "Home Turf" Glow: Rhiw Goch Inn
Look, I might be biased, but you haven’t lived until you’ve sat on our terrace with a local ale in hand as the Rhinogydd mountains turn purple. You don't even have to leave the grounds! If you're staying in our campsite in Snowdonia, you can literally unzip your tent and see the sky catch fire.

The Vibe: Relaxed, playful, and completely unpretentious. The kids can run around the fenced fields while you actually get to finish a conversation. It’s the perfect end to a day of active holidays in the hills.
2. The Lakeside Legend: Llyn Trawsfynydd
Distance: 5 minutes (LL41 4SA)
Just down the road from us is the Trawsfynydd lake. It’s huge, it’s eerie, and it’s beautiful. There’s a narrow footbridge that crosses the water, walking across that as the sun goes down feels like you’re starring in a high-budget fantasy movie.
Family Fun: It’s a great spot for a flat evening bike ride. The loop around the lake is mostly off-road. If you’re lucky, you might spot an osprey.
Peter’s Tip: Head to the café side of the lake for easy parking, then wander toward the dam for the best sunset reflections on the water.
3. The Coastal Classic: Barmouth & The Mawddach Estuary
Distance: 25 minutes (LL42 1NF)
If you fancy the sea air, Barmouth is the place. It’s a classic seaside town that feels like a step back in time but in the best way possible.

The Sundowner: Grab some fish and chips from one of the shops on the quay and walk out onto the Barmouth Bridge. It’s a wooden railway bridge that spans the Mawddach Estuary. When the tide is right and the sun is setting over the Cader Idris range, it’s honestly world-class.
For the Kids: The beach is massive. Let them dig holes to Australia while you sit on the dunes with a flask of something "adult."
4. Castle Silhouettes: Harlech
Distance: 20 minutes (LL46 2UA)
Harlech Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and seeing it backlit by a fiery orange sky is something else. The town itself clings to the cliffside, and the views across Tremadog Bay toward the Pen Llŷn are staggering.
Family Fun: Spend the afternoon exploring the castle (the kids will love the ramparts), then head down to the Harlech beach for a twilight stroll. It’s one of the 10 things to do in North Wales that you absolutely cannot miss.
5. The Adventure Hub: Blaenau Ffestiniog
Distance: 15 minutes (LL41 3NB)
Don't let the slate fool you, Blaenau is cool. It’s the adventure capital of the area. You’ve got Zip World Llechwedd right there. If you’ve spent the afternoon on the Titan 2 zip line or exploring the Deep Mine, you’ll be ready for a feed.
Local Eats: Check out the Grapes Hotel in nearby Maentwrog (LL41 4EE). It’s an old coaching inn with a great atmosphere. Or, better yet, head back to us at Rhiw Goch Inn for a hearty meal that doesn’t break the bank.

Why May is the Best Time to Visit
Being mid-May, the days are getting longer. Sunset tonight is around 9:10 PM. That gives you so much more "play time" with the family. You can go for a hike, visit an animal farm with the kids, and still have time for a proper sundowner before the little ones need to hit the hay.
If you're looking for accommodation that puts you right in the heart of this, our holiday apartments in North Wales or the Lodge at Rhiw Goch Inn are your best bets. We’ve got space, we’ve got views, and we’ve got plenty of Welsh charm.
Sunset Checklist for Families
To make sure your evening goes off without a hitch (and without a tantrum), here’s my "Peter-approved" kit list:
- Layers: It might be May, but once the sun drops, the mountain air gets chilly. Bring the "big coats" just in case.
- Headtorches: If you're walking back from a viewpoint, don't rely on your phone battery.
- Welsh Tapas: Pack some local cheese, crackers, and maybe a bit of Bara Brith.
- Camera: Obviously. But remember to put it down for five minutes and actually look at the view with your own eyes.

Local Pubs & Restaurants Within 30 Minutes
If you want to venture out from our charming Rhiw Goch Inn, here are a few of my favourite haunts:
- The Cross Foxes (Dolgellau, LL40 2SG): A bit more "gastro," great for a special treat. About 20 minutes south.
- Ty Gwyn (Betws-y-Coed, LL24 0SG): A bit further (about 35-40 mins), but Betws-y-Coed is a must-see. The river views at dusk are magical.
- The Brondanw Arms (Garreg, LL48 6ER): Known locally as "The Ring," this is a quirky, traditional pub with loads of character.
Driving Traffic to the Best View in Wales
We’re currently doing a lot of work on the Inn, restoring this 16th-century gem to its former glory. It’s a labour of love, and every person who stops by for a pint or stays in our Airbnb North Wales style apartments helps us keep the history alive. You can read more about our journey on the history of Rhiw Goch page.
Whether you're a local or visiting for a bank holiday in Wales, come and say hello. I’m usually around, probably obsessing over the lawn or making sure the local ales are kept at the perfect temperature.
Snowdonia is a big place, but it feels like a small community once you’re here. We want you to feel part of that. So, forget the big chains and the crowded tourist traps. Come to the heart of the park, find a quiet hillside, and watch the sun go down. I promise you won’t regret it.
