There’s something about the light in Snowdonia during May. It lingers. It stretches out over the Rhinogydd mountains, turning the heather a sort of dusty purple and making the stone walls of our 16th-century Inn look even more legendary than they already are.
I’m Peter Dive, and if you’ve spent any time here at Rhiw Goch Inn (LL41 4UY), you’ll know I’m currently knee-deep in restoring our Grade 2 listed tavern. It’s a labor of love (and a lot of dust), but while I’m working on bringing the old girl back to her former glory, I’ve made it my personal mission to test out every local watering hole and family haunt within a 60-minute radius.
You know, for "research."
Whether you’re staying in The Lodge House with the underfloor heating cranked up, or watching the sunset from The Hideaway Bed, you’re perfectly positioned for some serious Welsh adventure. Here is my ultimate guide to the best pubs, grub, and family fun near Trawsfynydd.
1. The "Almost-Next-Door" Favorites (0–15 Minutes)
You don’t have to travel far to find a cold pint or a decent bit of food. In fact, some of my favorite spots are just a stone’s throw from our campsite.
- The Cross Foxes, Trawsfynydd (LL41 4UB): Just a 5-minute hop down the road. It’s a proper village pub. Friendly staff, good local ales, and right by Llyn Trawsfynydd. It’s the perfect place to swap stories with locals after a day on the hills.
- Prysor Garage (LL41 4UA): Don't let the name fool you. It is a working garage, but it also serves some of the best pub-style food in the area. It’s quirky, it’s memorable, and the kids usually get a kick out of eating their chips while looking at vintage automotive gear.
- Coed y Brenin Visitor Centre (LL40 2HZ): About 10 minutes north on the A470. While it’s the mountain biking mecca of the UK, their café and bar are top-tier. Grab a local ale and a massive slice of cake after tackling the 'Tarw Du' trail.

2. Adventure Central: Blaenau Ffestiniog (20–25 Minutes)
If you have kids (or you’re just a big kid yourself), Blaenau is the place to be. It’s transformed from a slate capital into an adventure hub.
- Zip World Llechwedd (LL41 3NB): This place is bonkers in the best way. You’ve got Bounce Below (giant trampolines in a cavern), underground zip lines, and the deep mine tour. If you’re here in May 2026, keep an eye out for the Ultra-Trail Snowdonia (UTS) runners coming through, it’s an epic sight.
- Ffestiniog Railway: You can catch the steam train from Blaenau down to Porthmadog. It’s a slow-paced, nostalgic way to see the mountains without having to lace up your hiking boots.
3. Coastal Vibes and Castle Views (30–45 Minutes)
Sometimes you need the salt air. Luckily, we’re only about half an hour from some of the best beaches in North Wales.
- Harlech Castle & Beach (LL46 2YH): Harlech is a World Heritage site for a reason. The castle is imposing, and the beach is massive. I like to head to The Ty Mawr Hotel (LL45 2NH) in nearby Llanbedr for a post-beach dinner. It’s very family-friendly and has a great beer garden.
- Barmouth (LL42 1LS): The classic Welsh seaside experience. Donkey rides, arcades, and crabbing on the quay. For a "sundowner" with a view, head to the Min Y Mor Hotel (LL42 1HW) right on the promenade. Watching the sun dip into the Irish Sea with a drink in hand? Unbeatable.
4. The "Foodie" Run to Betws-y-Coed (35 Minutes)
If you head north on the A470, you’ll hit Betws-y-Coed. It’s the "Gateway to Snowdonia" and always buzzing.
- Ty Gwyn Hotel (LL24 0SG): This is a 16th-century coaching inn (like ours!) and has loads of character. Low beams, candlelit tables, and seriously good food. It’s a bit more "upmarket" but still welcoming to walkers with muddy boots.
- The Bryntirion Inn (LL23 7ED): If you head towards Bala instead, "The Bryn" is a legendary dog-friendly pub. It’s got a roaring log fire and a heated courtyard, perfect for those May evenings when the mountain air gets a bit nippy.
5. What’s Happening in May 2026?
May is a busy month in our neck of the woods. If you're staying with us, you might want to check out these events:
- Snowdonia Half Marathon (May 10, 2026): Starting in Llanrwst, this is one of the toughest runs in the UK. Even if you aren't running, the atmosphere in the local pubs afterward is electric.
- Ultra-Trail Snowdonia by UTMB (May 15–17, 2026): A massive international mountain running event. Expect to see lots of very fit people in neon gear around Llanberis and the surrounding trails.
- Guided Hikes (Late May): There are several organized women’s hikes and wild swims happening at Cnicht (the Welsh Matterhorn) and Cadair Idris on May 31st.
Why Stay at Rhiw Goch Inn?
Look, I’m biased, but I think we’ve got the best spot in the park. You’ve got direct access to the mountains, we’re right on the A470 for easy exploring, and once my restoration of the main Inn is finished, we’ll have the best tavern for miles.
For now, our holiday apartments offer a cozy, luxury retreat after a day of exploring Harlech or zip-lining through caverns. We’ve even got a helipad if you’re feeling particularly fancy (or just want to avoid the A470 traffic).

Stay adventurous,
