If you’ve ever sat on the porch of The Lodge House here at Rhiw Goch Inn with a cold glass of something fizzy, watching the sun dip behind the Rhinogydd mountains, you know exactly why I moved here. There is something about the way the light hits the Welsh hills that just… well, it makes you forget that the 16th-century Inn building is still a bit of a work in progress (don't worry, the renovation is coming along brilliantly, but those Grade 2 listed walls like to take their time!).

I’m Peter Dive, and when I’m not busy overseeing the restoration of our historic tavern or making sure the underfloor heating in the apartments is toasted to perfection, I’m out exploring. People always ask me on Reddit and over on the local forums: "Peter, where's the best place for a pint and a sunset in Snowdonia?"

Well, since we're right in the heart of Snowdonia National Park (LL41 4UY), we are spoiled for choice. Whether you're here for the holiday north wales experience or you've just spent the day tackling the mountain bike trails at Coed y Brenin Forest Park, you need a proper reward.

Here are my top 5 picks for sunset pubs within an hour of your front door at Rhiw Goch.

1. The George III Hotel, Penmaenpool (20 Mins Drive)

Address: Penmaenpool, Dolgellau LL40 1YD

This is my go-to when I want to feel a bit sophisticated without losing that rustic Welsh charm. The George III sits right on the edge of the Mawddach Estuary. They have a wooden deck that literally hangs over the water.

On a clear May evening, the reflection of the sunset on the estuary is world-class. It’s the kind of place where you order a local ale, tuck into their famous Sunday roast (if you're there at the weekend), and just watch the tide come in. It’s quiet, peaceful, and only 20 minutes from our Snowdonia base. If you've been hiking the Snowdon walks all day, your legs will thank you for the flat walk along the Mawddach Trail before you settle in.

A tranquil sunset over the Mawddach Estuary with the reflection of the golden sky in the water, captured with ultra-realistic photography.

2. The Last Inn, Barmouth (25 Mins Drive)

Address: Church St, Barmouth LL42 1EL

Barmouth is the king of sea sunsets. The Last Inn is one of the oldest pubs in the area, we’re talking 15th-century vibes, so it rivals our own history here at Rhiw Goch! It used to be a smugglers' haunt, and you can still see the natural spring water running down the rock face inside the pub.

I love it because you can grab a drink and wander out to the harbour or the bridge. Watching the sun drop into Cardigan Bay while the fishing boats bob in the water? Pure magic. It’s a great spot if you’re looking for a family holiday destination in North Wales because the kids can run on the beach while you keep an eye on the horizon.

3. The Grapes Hotel, Maentwrog (10 Mins Drive)

Address: Maentwrog, Blaenau Ffestiniog LL41 4HN

If you don’t want to drive far, The Grapes is practically our neighbour. It’s a classic 17th-century coaching inn tucked away in the Vale of Ffestiniog. While it doesn't have a sea view, it has something just as good: the "Golden Hour" over the valley.

The light hits the old stone buildings and the lush green hills in a way that makes the whole village glow. They serve some fantastic local ales from breweries like Purple Moose in Porthmadog. It's the perfect pit-stop after a day at the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways.

4. The Lion Hotel, Harlech (20 Mins Drive)

Address: High St, Harlech LL46 2UB

You haven’t seen a sunset until you’ve seen one framed by a medieval castle. Harlech is just down the road, and The Lion Hotel offers a spectacular vantage point. From the ridge, you look out over the sand dunes and the vast Tremadog Bay.

On a clear day, you can see all the way across to the Llŷn Peninsula. It’s one of those views that makes you realise why we love holidaying in North Wales. Plus, the walk up from the beach (which is one of our 5 must-visit beaches) will definitely earn you that second pint.

5. Ty Coch Inn, Porthdinllaen (1 Hour Drive)

Address: Porthdinllaen, Morfa Nefyn, Pwllheli LL53 6DB

Okay, this one is a bit of a trek (about an hour), but I had to include it. It’s frequently voted one of the best beach bars in the world. You can't even drive to it: you have to walk across the beach or the golf course from Morfa Nefyn.

The pub is literally on the sand. You sit there with your feet nearly in the water, watching the sun sink into the Irish Sea. It’s the ultimate Welsh summer experience. If you’re staying with us for a week at the Lodge House, this is the day trip you need to take.

Why Stay at Rhiw Goch Inn?

Look, I know I’m biased, but there’s nothing quite like coming back to your own private sanctuary after a sunset session.

Our self-catering holiday apartments are designed to be your home away from home.

  • The Lodge House: Perfect for families. It’s got that luxury cast iron bath for soaking after a mountain hike and underfloor heating that feels like a warm hug.
  • The Hideaway: For the couples who just want to escape. The views from the window at sunset are honestly some of the best in the park.
  • The Campsite: For the purists who want to be as close to nature as possible (with the added bonus of electric pitches, because we aren't savages!).

We are currently working hard on the main Inn building. The fire in 2018 was a blow, but seeing the stone chimneys silhouetted against the pink May skies keeps us motivated. Soon, you won't even have to leave the property for that perfect sunset pint: the tavern will be back and better than ever.

What’s Happening in May 2026?

If you're visiting us this month, don't miss the Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza (about an hour's drive north). It's a bit of a drive, but seeing the steam engines and the costumes is a hoot. Locally, the trails at Coed y Brenin are in peak condition, and the bluebells are usually out in force in the surrounding woods.

Ready to book your next Snowdonia adventure? Whether you're here for the biking, the hiking, or just the beer with a view, we’ve got a spot waiting for you.
