Listen, I get it. The sun finally peeks out over the Rhinogydd mountains, you see a picture of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) on Instagram, and suddenly you’re frantically typing “Best place to stay in North Wales” into Google at 11 PM on a Tuesday.
I’m Peter Dive, and I’ve seen this movie before. I spend most of my days here at Rhiw Goch Inn (LL41 4UY) overseeing the restoration of our 16th-century, Grade 2 listed tavern. If you haven’t heard the story, we had a bit of a literal "hot mess" back in 2018 when a fire tried to take the old girl down. But like a true Welsh dragon, she’s rising from the ashes, and while we’re busy rebuilding the main inn into a world-class tavern and games room, I’ve been making sure our Lodge House and Hideaway are the sharpest tools in the Snowdonia shed.
I spend a fair bit of time lurking on Reddit and Findaquestion (usually while having a well-earned brew), and I see the same heart-breaking mistakes every single summer. People come to Snowdonia and end up stressed, fined, or soaking wet in a car park.
Don't be that person. Here are the 7 biggest mistakes you’re making with your summer Snowdonia search, and how I’m personally fixing them for you.
1. Booking the "Big Two" (and getting stuck in the swarm)
The first mistake is searching for "Llanberis" or "Betws-y-Coed" and stopping there. Don't get me wrong, they’re lovely, but in July and August? They’re about as relaxing as a rush-hour tube station. You’ll spend half your holiday looking for a parking spot and the other half queueing for an ice cream.
The Peter Dive Fix: Look for the "A470 Corridor." We are perfectly positioned right on the A470 near Trawsfynydd. You get the peace of the deep National Park, but you’re only a short, scenic drive from the trailheads. Staying at Rhiw Goch Inn means you’re central to everything: from the mountain biking at Coed y Brenin Forest Park to the beaches of Harlech: without the Llanberis madness.
2. The "Wild Camping" Fantasy (that ends in a fine)
I see this on Reddit all the time: "Where can I wild camp in Snowdonia for free?" The answer is: you legally can't without landowner permission, and the National Park wardens are increasingly cracking down on "van-lifers" parking in laybys or by the lakes. There is nothing worse than being woken up at 2 AM by a tap on the window and a stern Welshman telling you to move on.

The Peter Dive Fix: I’ve set up our campsite specifically for people who want that "wild" feeling without the legal drama. We’ve got 5 electric pitches for the tech-dependent and plenty of space for tents. You get the same jaw-dropping sunset views over the Rhinogydd mountains, but you also get a hot shower and the knowledge that you aren't going to get a ticket. Plus, my sheep are much better neighbours than a busy roadside.
3. Underestimating the "Mountain Microclimate"
It’s May. The sun is out in Manchester or London, so you pack shorts and a thin hoodie for your Snowdon holiday. This is mistake number three. I’ve lived here long enough to know that the mountain doesn't care what month it is. It can be 20 degrees in Trawsfynydd and a freezing, horizontal-rain-fest at the summit of Yr Wyddfa.
The Peter Dive Fix: I always tell my guests to check the Met Office Mountain Forecast, not just the general BBC weather. When you stay in The Lodge House, you’ve got underfloor heating to come back to if you did ignore my advice and got a bit soggy. It’s the ultimate "I told you so" luxury.
4. The Pen-y-Pass Parking Purgatory
If your plan is to drive to Pen-y-Pass at 10 AM on a Saturday in June, you’ve already lost. You need to pre-book that parking months in advance, or you’ll be doing a very long, very illegal U-turn.
The Peter Dive Fix: I help my guests plan their "Assault on Snowdon" from a smarter angle. We’re located near some of the less-congested routes. Or, if you’re dead set on the main paths, use the Sherpa’r Wyddfa bus service. It’s way less stress. I’ve even had guests who decided to skip Snowdon entirely and hike the Rhinogydd directly from our doorstep: no parking fees, no crowds, just pure Welsh wilderness.
5. Ignoring the "Sunset Factor"
Most people book a Snowdonia Lodge based on how close it is to a pub or a shop. They forget that the best part of a summer holiday in Wales is the "Golden Hour." If you’re tucked away in a deep valley, the sun disappears at 4 PM behind a big rock.

The Peter Dive Fix: At Rhiw Goch, we are elevated. Our property has some of the best sunset views in the entire Park. Whether you’re sitting on the steps of The Hideaway or nursing a drink by your tent, watching the sky turn purple over the mountains is better than any TV show. It’s what I love most about living here.
6. Forgetting the "Rest" in Rest Day
People treat a Holiday in Wales like a military operation. Monday: Snowdon. Tuesday: Cadair Idris. Wednesday: Zip World. By Thursday, everyone is exhausted and the kids are crying.

The Peter Dive Fix: I’ve designed our holiday apartments to be places where you actually want to spend time. The Lodge House has a luxury cast iron bath that was practically made for soaking sore hiking legs. Take a day off. Walk around our grounds, watch the restoration progress on the 16th-century inn, and just breathe. You’re on holiday, not a boot camp.
7. Missing the "Deep History"
Snowdonia isn't just a gym made of slate; it’s a living piece of history. A lot of people stay in modern, soul-less pods and miss the vibe of the land.

The Peter Dive Fix: The Rhiw Goch Inn dates back to the 12th century (though the main building we're restoring is 16th century). When you stay here, you’re part of a story that involves ancient Welsh princes and centuries of hospitality. I’m pouring my heart into restoring this place because history matters. Even while the main tavern is a "work in progress," the atmosphere here is unmistakable. You can feel the age of the stone.
