If you are planning a campervan Snowdonia adventure this autumn, you may have noticed that the overnight parking rules have become a little… Welsh mountain weather. Changeable, occasionally confusing, and best checked before you head out.
The short version is this: wild camping is not permitted anywhere in Eryri National Park without explicit landowner permission, and sleeping in a campervan or motorhome is treated much like wild camping.
Overnight stays in public car parks, roadside lay-bys and verges are not the straightforward free-for-all some people assume. The rules have shifted during 2026, so signage is what counts. Always check the latest Eryri National Park Authority guidance before travelling.
Fortunately, there is a much simpler answer: book a proper campsite or a designated Arosfan stopover, dispose of your waste properly, and sleep without wondering whether a warden, or an irritated local sheep, will be knocking on your van.
Can you sleep overnight in a campervan in Snowdonia?
The official position is clear: staying overnight in a campervan or motorhome in an Eryri National Park car park is not permitted.
In April 2026, the Eryri National Park Authority introduced overnight parking restrictions at 11 car parks. In June, the broader ban was paused while its impact was reviewed. That means some restrictions were lifted or paused, while other sites continue to enforce overnight closures or specific time limits.
So, in practical terms:
- Some car parks may appear to be open for 24 hours.
- Other car parks still have overnight restrictions.
- The rules can differ from one location to another.
- Signage at the car park is the immediate thing to follow.
- A 24-hour car park does not automatically mean you can camp or sleep in your vehicle there.
The Authority’s guidance remains that National Park car parks are designed mainly for daytime recreation, not overnight accommodation. Roadside verges, lay-bys and informal pull-ins are not suitable substitutes either.
I know it is tempting when you find a spectacular empty lay-by with a mountain view. But if everyone treats it as a campsite, it quickly stops being spectacular, and starts becoming a headache for residents, farmers, emergency services and the National Park.
What about wild camping in Eryri?
Wild camping is not permitted anywhere in Eryri without explicit permission from the landowner. That applies to open countryside, access land and mountain areas.
Sleeping in a van at the side of the road is not a clever technical loophole. It is treated much like wild camping, particularly if you put out chairs, levelers, awnings or anything else that makes your “parking” look very much like camping.
For a legal autumn holiday in North Wales, your best options are:
- Book an official campsite that accepts campervans and motorhomes.
- Use a designated Arosfan or motorhome stopover site, following its own rules.
- Book a holiday apartment or lodge if the Welsh weather decides to become especially enthusiastic.
Arosfan sites are generally short-stay facilities for self-contained vehicles, often with limited services and strict arrival and departure times. They are useful for a night or two, but they are not always a substitute for a proper campsite with space, views and waste facilities.

Important: we do not have toilets and showers
I would much rather be honest about this than let you arrive expecting a luxury shower block.
Rhiw Goch Inn campsite has no on-site toilets and no showers.
We do have:
- Fresh water
- Grey waste disposal
- A toilet tipping point
The nearest public toilets are in Trawsfynydd, around six minutes by car, near the Health Centre at 1 Bron Haul, Trawsfynydd, LL41 4FP area. Alternatively, you can use the facilities at the National Trust South Snowdonia car park, Dolmelynllyn, Ganllwyd, Dolgellau LL40 2TF.
Please arrive prepared with your onboard facilities in working order, and bring a good torch. Parts of the campsite are unlit, which is charming at sunset and considerably less charming when you are looking for your boots at 6.30am.

Booking, arrival and campsite rules
There is nobody sitting behind a reception desk waiting for a dramatic late-night arrival. When you arrive, call the number on your booking confirmation.
Please:
- Arrive and be set up before 22:00
- Keep noise down after 22:00
- Leave at least 2 metres between pitches
- Park cars in the designated area
- Keep cars and motorbikes away from the tent pitches
- Remember that the tents are on a ledge below the car park
- Ensure at least one person in your party is aged 18 or over
- Stay for no more than 28 consecutive nights
- Bring a torch
Fires, barbecues and firepits are not permitted during dry, windy or hot weather. Autumn in Snowdonia can be damp one minute and surprisingly dry the next, so please follow the conditions on arrival.
We cannot accept breeds or crossbreeds listed under the Dangerous Dogs Act, including XL Bully, Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino and Fila Brasileiro.
Finding Rhiw Goch Inn in the dark
Our postcode is LL41 4UY, although the postcode can take you to the top of the hill around four minutes away.
From the A470:
- Turn as you cross the cattle grid.
- Look for the blue sign on the trees saying turn right.
- Pass the holiday village and ease right.
- Cross another cattle grid.
- Drive slowly past the holiday lets.
- The campsite is in the lower car park.
Use Google Maps directions here, or find us with what3words: ///buzzing.outnumber.display.
My strongest autumn tip? Arrive before dark. Light fades quickly in the valleys, and rural Welsh lanes are much more enjoyable when you can see where they are going.
Autumn campervan tips for Snowdonia
Before setting off on your holiday in Wales, I recommend:
- Do not rely on a car park that looked empty last year. Rules and signage can change.
- Check the Eryri National Park Authority website before travelling.
- Plan a midweek night if you want more peace and fewer neighbours conducting dawn gear changes.
- Sort your waste before you travel. A full grey-water tank is not a souvenir.
- Book ahead for popular weekends and school holidays.
- Remember that peak-season day parking pressure around hotspots such as Pen-y-Pass has led to booking systems and restrictions.
- Base yourself somewhere with its own parking, then explore by foot, bike or car.
- Respect “no overnight” signs. That helps keep local communities on side and keeps legal campsites like ours viable.
Prefer a proper bed and a hot bath?
Campervans are brilliant, but sometimes the correct adventure is a bathrobe.

Our Lodge House sleeps up to six, with:
- A king-size bed
- Two single beds
- A sofa bed
- Underfloor heating
- A luxury cast iron bath
- A separate shower
For couples, The Hideaway is a cosy one-bedroom apartment above the arch, with a king-size bed, kitchen, seating area, shower and sunset views over the Rhinogydd.
Book direct through Rhiw Goch Inn’s direct booking page. Booking direct saves operator fees and helps fund our restoration of the 16th-century Grade 2 listed inn, damaged by fire in 2018. We are working towards bringing it back as a tavern with a games room and self-contained apartments, so your stay helps put a little more life back into this old place.

The safest option is an official campsite or designated Arosfan stopover.
Can you wild camp in Snowdonia?
Not without explicit landowner permission. Wild camping is not permitted anywhere in Eryri National Park as a general right, and sleeping in a campervan is treated much like wild camping.
Does Rhiw Goch Inn campsite have electric hookups?
Yes. We have five hardstanding pitches with electric hookup via Pitchup. Direct bookings use a permitted hardstanding car park area with eight spaces, subject to availability.
Does the campsite have toilets and showers?
No. Rhiw Goch Inn campsite has no on-site toilets or showers. We do have fresh water, grey waste disposal and a toilet tipping point. Please arrive prepared.
Where can I arrive late in Snowdonia with a campervan?
At Rhiw Goch Inn, you must arrive and be set up before 22:00. There is no reception, so call the number on your booking confirmation when you arrive. If you need a later stopover, check the rules and arrival times of a designated Arosfan site before travelling, do not assume a public car park is suitable.
Ready to stop searching for a legal place to sleep? Book a Rhiw Goch Inn campsite pitch or book The Lodge or The Hideaway direct. Come for the mountains, stay for the sunset, and leave the parking-rule gymnastics to someone else.
