Autumn in Wales has a knack for making an ordinary woodland walk feel like the opening scene of a ghost story. Add a steam train disappearing into the dark or a clown lurking by the trees, and, well, I’m suddenly very glad to be heading back to a warm bed afterwards.

I’m Peter Dive, and for Halloween half-term I’ve rounded up spooky days out from our place in Bronaber, near Trawsfynydd (LL41 4UY). These picks put Rhiw Goch Inn at the centre of your plans, with nearby adventures first and a couple of longer trips for anyone keen to stretch the radius. Travel times are estimates: check your route, allow for autumn traffic and weather, and always check the attraction’s official website for current event times and tickets before setting off.

1. Ffear Fforest at Zip World Betws-y-Coed

If your family’s idea of Halloween fun includes shrieking on a coaster rather than merely at a spider in the bath, Ffear Fforest is the big one. It runs 8 October to 1 November 2026, from 7:30pm to 10:30pm, at Zip World Betws-y-Coed, LL24 0HX. From Bronaber, allow around 40 minutes by car, depending on the route and conditions.

The dark woodland setting of Zip World’s Ffear Fforest scare event

The standard Night Pass includes two rides on the Cursed Coaster and access to the tree-top Nets. The coaster hurtles through the dark forest, while the clowns do their best to make sure you don’t get too comfortable. The event is for ages 9 and over, and under-18s need an adult with them. It’s ticketed, capacity-limited and advertised as a sell-out event, so check the live booking page rather than assuming you can turn up.

This is one for older children, teens and adults who enjoy a proper fright. If someone in your group prefers their thrills with fewer lurking clowns, save this one for another year.

2. Bala Lake Railway’s Halloween Trains

For spooky atmosphere with a little less full-volume terror, Bala Lake Railway’s Halloween Trains run on 30 and 31 October 2026. Services leave from Llanuwchllyn station, Station Road, Llanuwchllyn, LL23 7DD, at 5:30pm and 6:45pm. It’s roughly a half-hour drive from Rhiw Goch Inn, though do check your sat-nav on the day.

The train travels down the line before stopping at the haunted Flag Halt on the return journey, where ghosts and ghouls are waiting. The stations are dressed for the occasion, and passengers are welcome to dress up too. Published fares are £12.50 for adults, £5 for children and £1 for dogs. Check the railway’s event page for current ticket availability and booking details.

This is a lovely family-friendly Snowdonia half-term option if you fancy a Halloween evening out that’s more “spooky story” than “run for your life”.

3. Cadw’s Halloween trail at Harlech Castle

A castle on a rocky outcrop is already doing half the Halloween work for you. At Castell Harlech, Harlech, LL46 2YH, Cadw is running its Halloween trail, crafts and badge-making on Saturday 31 October, 11am–4pm. Harlech is one of the closer trips from Bronaber; allow around 20–25 minutes by car, subject to your route.

The trail and craft activities make this a good pick for families who want Halloween fun without a late night. Cadw notes that badge-making has an extra charge. The event page says you don’t need to book a separate ticket for the activity, but normal castle admission applies. Check Cadw’s Halloween Fun page for updates, and the Harlech Castle visitor page for opening details and practical information. The castle’s usual October closing time is 5pm, with last admission 30 minutes before closing.

4. SpookWood at GreenWood Family Park

Want Halloween with pumpkins, rides and a gentler scare level? SpookWood runs 24 October to 1 November at GreenWood Family Park, Y Felinheli, LL56 4QN. This one is around the outer edge of an hour’s drive from Rhiw Goch Inn, depending on traffic, so I’d check the route before planning your day.

The official event page lists a pumpkin trail, pumpkin carving, spooky forest entertainment and the chance to try the Green Dragon Roller Coaster blindfolded. That last one sounds like a brilliant idea until I remember I like knowing where I’m going. The park describes SpookWood as fun for all ages, with rides and activities open during the event; it’s open daily from 10am to 5:30pm, with last entry at 4pm.

Check the official SpookWood page and ticket booking page for the latest details before travelling.

5. Fright Express: a longer rail adventure

The Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways’ Fright Express is scheduled for 28–31 October 2026. One important detail from the railway’s official event page: this spooky evening service runs from Caernarfon to Dinas and back, not from Porthmadog or Blaenau Ffestiniog. The train trip is around an hour, followed by about an hour of entertainment at Caernarfon Station.

Caernarfon is a longer drive from Bronaber than the nearby options, so treat this as a stretch beyond the easy local radius and check your route and timings before booking. The railway lists fares of £20 for adults and £5 for children, plus a booking fee. Costumes are welcome but not compulsory; there are no refreshments on board, though the station café sells snacks. Check the official page for live availability and full travel details.

6. A rainy-day escape underground at Llechwedd

Not every Halloween outing needs a ghost, and not every October day in North Wales agrees to stay dry. For a weather-proof alternative, the Deep Mine Tour at Zip World Llechwedd takes you underground into the slate caverns at Blaenau Ffestiniog, LL41 3NB. A handy trip from Bronaber.

The guided tour descends around 500 feet and explores historic chambers, with projections and an underground lake along the way. It takes about 1.5 hours and stays at a cool 6–8°C, so bring warm clothes and sturdy footwear. It isn’t a Halloween event, but old mine tunnels have atmosphere to spare. Check the official tour page for dates and booking slots.

Make Rhiw Goch Inn your Halloween base

I love this part of Snowdonia in autumn: one day you can be following a torch-lit trail or boarding a spooky train; the next, you can be back in Bronaber looking out towards the Rhinogydd. Rhiw Goch Inn is holiday accommodation and camping in a handy spot near Trawsfynydd, with the A470 close by and the quiet of the mountains around us.

You can browse The Lodge House, the Hideaway Bed or our Snowdonia campsite to find the stay that suits your group. Our campsite has electric pitches as well as space for tents; check the listing for current facilities and availability. The historic inn itself is being restored, so please check our website for what’s currently available rather than expecting a fully open pub just yet.

A few small bits of Halloween planning from me:

  • Book ahead, particularly for evening trains and Ffear Fforest: limited spaces can disappear quickly.
  • Check each official event website for current times, ticket availability, age guidance and any changes.
  • Pack layers, a torch for the darker evenings, and shoes that can handle Welsh autumn weather.
  • Give yourself extra driving time, especially for trips towards Caernarfon or Y Felinheli.
