When people staying around Bronaber and Trawsfynydd ask me, “What’s open around here in the colder months?”, I’m happy to point them towards Llyn Trawsfynydd. The lake’s perimeter walking and cycling track stays open all year, and on a clear winter day those wide skies and mountain views are hard to beat.
A quick bit of honesty before you lace up: “flat” is a useful description of the feel of a lakeside outing, not a promise that every metre is level. And one familiar link across the lake is definitely off the menu. Here’s how to plan a good autumn or winter visit without getting caught out.

Why I like the lake in autumn and winter
In warmer months, a day out can become a full logistical exercise: queues, crowds, and the traditional hunt for somewhere to park. The colder months bring a different mood. There’s more room to enjoy the open landscape, and a brisk walk can be a fine antidote to a day spent in the car.
Llyn Trawsfynydd is a reservoir in the heart of Snowdonia, near the village of Trawsfynydd. The lakeside route is also a lovely change of pace from steeper Snowdonia winter walks. You get a big landscape without needing to turn every outing into a mountain expedition. I’m fond of a summit, but I’m equally fond of a walk where the main challenge is persuading myself to leave the warm car.
The lake’s outdoor walking and cycling track remains open throughout the year. Still, winter means shorter daylight and changeable conditions, so check local route information before setting off and give yourself time to finish in daylight.
The important route update: the footbridge is closed
The historic footbridge across the lake is permanently closed because of safety concerns, with demolition planned. Don’t build your route around crossing it, and don’t try to use it.
That matters if you’re picturing a neat circular walk that simply follows the shore and crosses the bridge. The official cycling information describes an eight-mile lake loop, but the bridge closure affects how you plan a full circuit. Walkers and cyclists may need to follow a diversion that involves a road section; check current maps and signs and take particular care where the route meets the main road.
A few simple planning points:
- Choose your start point and route before you go. The cycling route information says you can start from Trawsfynydd village or Canolfan Prysor Centre.
- Check the latest route guidance. Use the official Llyn Trawsfynydd cycling page and its downloadable route map.
- Allow for the terrain. The published cycling route includes a steep section of about 400 metres near the main dam. It isn’t a wall-to-wall gentle stroll, so wear suitable footwear and don’t assume every part is flat.
- Take care with daylight. Autumn and winter evenings arrive early. A torch is sensible if there’s any chance your walk could run late.
The track being open all year is good news; it doesn’t mean every connection is open or that conditions will always be suitable. A little planning makes for a much better outing.

What else is open around Trawsfynydd in the colder months?
The best answer is to separate the outdoor lake activities from the facilities, which may have seasonal hours.
Canolfan Prysor Centre
Canolfan Prysor Centre offers a café, boat hire and visitor facilities. The centre’s published information says it opens on certain days and advises visitors to check its Facebook page or Google Business listing for current hours. In other words, don’t assume the café will be open just because the lake track is.
The centre’s postcode is LL41 4DT. Check opening information before travelling, especially in the colder months. The centre also recommends booking fishing boats in advance; see its facilities page for details.
A guided trail run on 25 October
If you fancy swapping walking boots for running shoes, a guided 13 km trail run around Llyn Trawsfynydd is listed for Sunday 25 October 2026. The event listing describes runnable trails, limited ascent and regrouping stops. Check the organiser’s event page for booking details and the latest arrangements before making plans.
Fishing through the autumn
Fishing at Llyn Trawsfynydd is listed as running until 20 December 2026. The brown trout season ended on 30 September, so check the rules for the species you’re targeting and confirm permits and current conditions with the fishery before you go. You can find more information on the lake’s fishing page.
A good day out from Rhiw Goch Inn
For me, the pleasure of a winter break in this part of Snowdonia is not having to cram every hour with a major attraction. A lakeside walk, a warm drink if the café is open, and a slow look at the mountains can be more than enough. Llyn Trawsfynydd is a lovely option for couples, families and outdoor-minded guests looking for things to do near Trawsfynydd in the colder months.
Rhiw Goch Inn is at LL41 4UY, near Bronaber, and offers holiday accommodation and camping as a base for exploring the area. Our historic inn is being restored; a tavern is part of our future plans, but it is not currently operating as a public pub or restaurant. For current stay information, explore our holiday accommodation, campsite or Rhiw Goch Inn website.
My quick checklist for a cold-weather lake day
- Check the route map and plan around the permanently closed footbridge.
- Check Canolfan Prysor Centre’s social media or Google listing for café and facility hours.
- Wear layers and sturdy footwear; the route isn’t uniformly level.
- Bring a torch and keep an eye on daylight.
- If fishing or joining the guided run, confirm current details directly with the organiser or fishery.
That’s the simple version: the Llyn Trawsfynydd walk and cycling track are available year-round, but the bridge is closed and centre opening hours vary. Get those details straight, and you can enjoy one of my favourite big-sky corners of Snowdonia without needing a summer forecast.
