Morning everyone! Peter Dive here. I’m currently sitting outside the Lodge House with a lukewarm coffee, watching the mist roll off the Rhinogydd mountains. It’s the 2nd of June, the sun is finally deciding to play ball, and the air smells like gorse and adventure. It’s peak "let’s go to Wales" season, and my inbox is currently a battlefield of questions from folks planning their summer escape.
I spend a fair bit of time lurking on Reddit, mostly in the r/Snowdonia and r/campinguk subreddits, and I see the same questions popping up every single year. "Is wild camping okay?" "Which path should I take up Snowdon?" "Will I get eaten alive by midges?"
Look, I’ve lived and breathed the North Wales landscape for a long time now. I’ve seen people arrive at Rhiw Goch Inn with nothing but a pop-up tent and a dream, and I've seen others roll in with more gear than an Everest expedition. Whether you’re looking for a rugged Snowdon holiday under canvas or a bit of luxury in a Snowdonia Lodge, there are a few things you really need to know before you set off for LL41 4UY.
Here are 10 things I’ve learned from years of running the Inn and living in this glorious, rainy, beautiful part of the world.
1. The Weather is a Different Beast Up Here
I know, I know, everyone talks about the British weather. But Snowdonia (or Eryri, as we call it) doesn't just "do weather"; it performs it. It’s June, but I’ve seen it go from "t-shirt and suncream" to "horizontal sleet" in the time it takes to eat a sandwich on the summit of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon).
Before you head out from your pitch at the Rhiw Goch Inn campsite, check the Met Office Mountain Forecast, not just the regular one. If you’re staying in our Lodge House or The Hideaway, you’ve got underfloor heating to come back to, but if you're in a tent, make sure your groundsheet is actually waterproof. Trust me on this.
2. "Wild Camping" is Mostly a Myth (But We’ve Got the Real Deal)
I see this on Reddit daily: "Can I just pitch my tent anywhere on Snowdon?" The short answer is: no. Not legally, anyway. Most of the land is privately owned or managed by the National Park.
If you want that "wild" feeling without the risk of a grumpy farmer moving you along at 3 AM, our campsite is basically the middle ground. We’ve got five electric pitches and plenty of space for tents, all bordered by traditional stone walls with uninterrupted views of the mountains. You get the stars, the silence, and the views, but with the added bonus of a proper shower and not being chased by sheep.

3. The "Llanberis Path" is the M25 of Hiking
If you’re coming for a Snowdon holiday and you plan on taking the Llanberis Path on a Saturday in June, prepare for company. It’s like a slow-moving queue for a very high-altitude Greggs.
My personal recommendation? Try the Rhyd Ddu path or the Snowdon Ranger path. They are much quieter and, frankly, the views are better. We’re perfectly positioned on the A470, which means you can zip over to the various trailheads easily while still having a quiet base to return to.
4. Midges: They’re Small, But They Are Mighty
The Welsh midge is a tiny terror. They love a damp, still evening. If you’re camping, bring "Smidge" or Avène Skin So Soft (the secret weapon of hikers everywhere).
If you’re staying in The Lodge House, you can just close the windows and watch the sunset from the comfort of the sofa. But for my campers, be prepared. A little fire pit (off the ground, please!) usually helps keep them at bay.
5. Location is Everything (And We’re in the Sweet Spot)
When people search for a Snowdonia Lodge, they often end up miles away from the actual activities. We’re located at LL41 4UY, which is basically the gateway to everything.
- Mountain Biking: Coed y Brenin Forest Park is just down the road. It’s world-class.
- Hiking: You have direct access to Snowdon walks and the Rhinogydd range.
- The Coast: You can be at the beach in about 20 minutes.
Being on the A470 means you aren't navigating terrifying single-track lanes for hours just to get a loaf of bread, but once you turn into our drive, you’d never know the road was there.
6. Lodges Aren't Just for "Glampers"
I’ve had some hardcore hikers stay in The Hideaway and tell me they’ll never go back to a tent. There is something truly special about being able to soak in a luxury cast iron bath after a 10-mile hike.
If you’re traveling as a family, the Lodge House is a game-changer. It’s a renovated two-story home with a king-size bed that’s basically a cloud. If you're debating between a tent and a lodge for your Holiday Wales experience, think about how much you value a dry pair of socks.
7. The Sunset at Rhiw Goch is Unrivalled
I’m not just saying that because I own the place. The way the sun sets over the Rhinogydd mountains is genuinely spiritual. People pay thousands for views like this in the Alps, but you can get it right here in Trawsfynydd.
I’ve spent many an evening just standing on the gravel pitches of the campsite, watching the sky turn pink and orange. It’s the perfect time to crack open a local ale and realize why you bothered driving all the way here.
8. Don't Rely on Your Sat Nav
Technology is great until you’re in the middle of a Welsh valley and your GPS tells you to drive into a lake. Before you arrive at Rhiw Goch Inn, download your maps for offline use. Signal can be patchy (though we do have Wi-Fi at the accommodation!).
Look for the signs for the historic Rhiw Goch: we’re easy to find if you’re looking, but easy to miss if you’re blindly following a robot voice.
9. We’re Part of History
The Inn itself dates back to the 12th century. We’re currently in the middle of a massive restoration of the Grade 2 listed 16th-century building that was sadly damaged by fire in 2018. When you stay here, you’re part of that story.
We’re turning it back into a tavern with a games room and more apartments, but for now, you can enjoy the peace of the grounds and the renovated outbuildings. It’s got a vibe you just don't get at a modern "holiday park."

10. Respect the "Cymru" Way
Finally, the biggest thing to know: North Wales isn't just a playground; it’s a community. "Leave No Trace" isn't just a suggestion; it’s the law of the land for us. Take your rubbish home, close the gates, and be mindful of the livestock.
The people here are some of the friendliest you’ll ever meet: if you treat the land with respect.
