Morning, folks! Peter Dive here. If you’re reading this, you’re probably scrolling through a thousand different tabs, trying to figure out where to park your boots (and your family) for a summer break in North Wales. I get it. Booking a Snowdonia lodge or finding a decent campsite can feel like a full-time job.
I spend most of my days here at Rhiw Goch Inn (LL41 4UY) either looking at the stunning Rhinogydd mountains or trying to figure out which stone in our 16th-century walls needs the most love today. I see people arriving with all sorts of expectations, some think they’re staying in a five-star hotel with a butler, others think they’re about to survive the wilderness like Bear Grylls.
So, before you hit that "book" button, I’ve put together a list of 10 things you really ought to know. This isn’t your standard corporate "top 10" fluff; this is the real deal from someone who actually lives and breathes this beautiful, rainy, glorious part of the world.
1. The "Inn" is a Work in Progress (But the Lodges are Mint)
First things first, let’s address the elephant in the room. The Rhiw Goch Inn itself is a Grade 2 listed building dating back to the 12th century (the foundations, anyway). It had a bit of a rough time with a fire in 2018, and we are currently in the middle of a massive restoration project.
If you’re coming here expecting a fully functioning pub with a roaring fire and a pint of bitter ready at the bar today… well, you’re a few months early. We are turning it into a spectacular tavern and games room, but for now, we focus on our luxury self-catering accommodation. Trust me, unwinding in peace and quiet is much easier when there isn't a rowdy pub downstairs!
2. Location is Everything (A470 is Your Friend)
We are located right on the A470. Now, usually, "on the road" sounds like a bad thing, doesn't it? Not here. Being on the A470 near Trawsfynydd means you can get anywhere in Snowdonia quickly. You’re not stuck down a single-track lane for 45 minutes trying to pass a tractor. Whether you’re heading north to Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) or south to the coast, we are the perfect base camp.
3. The Lodge House vs. The Hideaway
People often ask on Reddit: "Lodge or apartment?" Here’s my take:
- The Lodge House: This is our two-story pride and joy. It’s got underfloor heating (essential even in a Welsh summer, let’s be honest), a king-size bed, and a luxury cast iron bath. If you want to feel like a local landowner, this is the one.
- The Hideaway: This is a cozy one-bedroom apartment. The USP here? The sunset views over the Rhinogydd mountains are, frankly, ridiculous. You can sit there with a glass of wine and watch the sky turn pink. It’s uncovering tranquility and comfort at its best.

4. Camping in Snowdonia isn’t for the Faint-Hearted
If you’re choosing our campsite over a Snowdonia lodge, you’re a brave soul, and I salute you. We have 5 electric pitches and plenty of space for tents. The views are 10/10, but remember: this is Wales. It might be June, but it might also rain sideways for twenty minutes. Bring the right gear! The trade-off? Waking up, unzipping your tent, and seeing the mist rolling off the mountains. You can’t put a price on that.
5. Mountain Bikers: You’re 10 Minutes from Heaven
I see a lot of people asking about mountain biking accommodation in Wales. We are literally 10 minutes away from Coed y Brenin Forest Park. It’s the birthplace of mountain biking in the UK. If you aren't staying here, you're doing it wrong. We’ve got plenty of space for your bikes and a warm place to dry your gear when you inevitably fall into a puddle.
6. The "Short Cut" to Snowdon
Everyone wants to climb Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa). Most people head to Llanberis and walk up the "motorway" with 5,000 other people. Don't do that. Being based at LL41 4UY means you’re on the quieter side of the park. You can access various routes without the madness. Pro tip: start early. Like, "before the birds wake up" early.
7. It's Dog and Family Heaven
We love dogs. We love kids. (Sometimes in that order, depending on how much noise they're making!). If you're looking for a family oasis in North Wales, we’ve got the space. There’s enough room for the kids to run around without bothering anyone, and the sheep in the neighboring fields provide endless entertainment.

8. Don't Trust the Weather App
If your phone says it’s going to be 20 degrees and sunny all day, it’s lying. It’s always lying. In Snowdonia, we can have four seasons in an hour. Pack a raincoat, pack a jumper, and pack your shorts. When the sun does come out, though? There is nowhere on earth more beautiful. The light here in May and June is something else: crisp, clear, and perfect for photos.
9. History is LITERALLY in the Walls
You aren't just staying in a "holiday let." You’re staying on a site that has hosted travelers for nearly a millennium. There’s a weight to the history here that you can feel. When I’m working on the renovation, I often wonder about the people who sat in these same spots 500 years ago. It makes your Snowdon holiday feel like a part of something much bigger.
10. Book Direct (Seriously)
I’ll let you in on a secret. Those big booking sites? They take a massive cut. If you want the best rates and the most flexible service, just go to www.rhiwgochinn.co.uk. You’re dealing with me and the team directly. If you have a special request or you’re wondering if your extra-large campervan will fit, just ask!

Summary of What You Need to Know:
- Postcode: LL41 4UY (Trawsfynydd)
- Best for: Hikers, Bikers, and Sunset-seekers.

So, what are you waiting for? The mountains are calling, the underfloor heating is ready, and I’ve probably got a wall that needs pointing. Come and see us this summer!

Peter Dive
