Let’s be honest for a second: there is absolutely nothing like that first sip of a cold pint after a long day of hiking, mountain biking, or: in my case: trying to figure out how to restore a 16th-century chimney without it falling on my head.
I’m Peter Dive, and if you’ve been following our progress here at the Rhiw Goch Inn, you know we’re knee-deep in a massive restoration project. We’re bringing this historic Grade 2 listed gem back to its former glory after that devastating fire in 2018. It’s a labour of love, and believe me, it’s thirsty work.
But when you’re on a holiday in North Wales with the kids in tow, "finding a pub" isn't just about the beer. It’s about finding a place where the little ones won’t get the "side-eye" for being energetic, where the food is actually good, and where the views make you remember why you chose Snowdonia for your getaway in the first place.
I’ve spent plenty of evenings scouting out the best local haunts around our base at Bronaber, Trawsfynydd (LL41 4UY). Whether you’re staying in our cozy Lodge House or pitching a tent at our campsite, you’re perfectly positioned on the A470 to explore some of the best hospitality Wales has to offer.
Here are my top 10 family-friendly pubs within an hour’s drive of the Inn that I personally recommend.
1. Rhiw Goch Inn (Our Very Own Home Base)
Address: Bronaber, Trawsfynydd, Blaenau Ffestiniog LL41 4UY
I might be biased, but you can’t get more local than this. While the main historic tavern is still under renovation (stay tuned for the games room and new apartments!), we are already the "home base" for so many families staying in the area.
We’ve got massive outdoor spaces where the only "traffic" you’ll encounter is the occasional sheep wandering past. It’s a safe, relaxed environment where kids can run around while you enjoy the sunset over the Rhinogydd mountains. If you're looking for authentic holiday experiences in Snowdonia, starting right here is a no-brainer.
2. The Grapes Hotel, Maentwrog
Address: Maentwrog, Blaenau Ffestiniog LL41 4EE
Just a short 10-minute hop down the road from us, The Grapes is a classic. It’s got a fantastic rear balcony and a dedicated children’s playground that you can actually see from the beer garden. This is a game-changer for parents who want to finish their meal in peace while the kids burn off some steam. Their Sunday carvery is legendary, and they’ve got a solid kids' menu that goes beyond just chicken nuggets.
3. The Cross Foxes, Trawsfynydd Village
Address: Trawsfynydd, Blaenau Ffestiniog LL41 4SB
Located right in the heart of our local village, this is a traditional Welsh pub through and through. It’s cozy, welcoming, and perfectly situated if you’ve spent the afternoon walking around Llyn Trawsfynydd. It’s the kind of place where you feel like a local the moment you walk in. Great for a quick family dinner after a day of exploring North Wales.
4. The George III, Penmaenpool
Address: Penmaenpool, Dolgellau LL40 1YD
If you want views, this is the one. It sits right on the edge of the Mawddach Estuary. I love taking the family here because the Mawddach Trail is right on the doorstep: it’s flat and perfect for a family bike ride or a buggy-friendly stroll. The Cellar Bar is particularly informal and great for families and dog owners. Just watch the tide come in while you eat; it’s mesmerising.

5. Cross Foxes – Bar Grill Rooms, Brithdir
Address: Dolgellau LL40 2SG
Not to be confused with the one in Trawsfynydd, this "Cross Foxes" is located at the junction of the A470 and A487. It’s a bit more "upmarket" but remains incredibly family-friendly. It’s won awards for its food, and they have a great outdoor area. It’s a perfect stopping point if you’ve been exploring the southern parts of the National Park or heading back from a day at the beach in Barmouth.
6. The Oakeley Arms, Maentwrog
Address: Tan-y-Bwlch, Maentwrog LL41 3YU
This place is huge and full of history. It’s got plenty of space for larger families and a very relaxed vibe. Because it’s so spacious, you never feel like you’re on top of other diners. It’s a great spot to hit after visiting the Ffestiniog Railway nearby.
7. The Victoria Inn, Llanbedr
Address: Llanbedr LL45 2LD
If you’re heading towards the coast (about 25 minutes from us), stop at The Victoria. It has a massive beer garden with a play area for the kids and a small stream running alongside it. It’s idyllic in the summer. They serve generous portions, which is exactly what you need after a day at Shell Island or Harlech Castle.

8. The Ship Inn, Porthmadog
Address: Lombard St, Porthmadog LL49 9LU
Porthmadog is a must-visit for the steam trains alone. The Ship Inn is a great "harbour pub" with a lively atmosphere. It’s right in the mix of things, so it’s perfect for a family lunch before catching the train or browsing the local shops. It’s about a 20-minute drive from the Rhiw Goch Inn.
9. The Brondanw Arms (The Ring), Garreg
Address: Llanfrothen, Penrhyndeudraeth LL48 6AQ
Locally known as "The Ring," this is one of those hidden gems. It’s quirky, full of character, and has a lovely garden. It’s a bit off the beaten track but well worth the drive for the atmosphere. It’s very close to Portmeirion, so it’s a great place to refuel after visiting the famous Italianate village.
10. The White Lion Royal Hotel, Bala
Address: High St, Bala LL23 7AE
Bala is about 25-30 minutes east of us, and The White Lion is a solid choice for families. If you’ve spent the day on the lake (Llyn Tegid), this is a great place to dry off and grab a burger. They are very used to catering to tourists and families, so the service is usually quick and friendly.
What’s Happening Nearby? (May & June 2026)
If you’re planning your holiday in North Wales for the end of May or early June, there’s plenty going on for the kids.
Over at Chirk Castle (about an hour away), they’re running May half-term activities from the 23rd to the 31st of May. It's all about den building and nature: perfect for little adventurers. Also, the Wrexham Walking Festival kicks off from June 6th-14th, with plenty of free guided walks that are suitable for families.
Closer to home, don't forget that Zip World Llechwedd in Blaenau Ffestiniog is only 15 minutes away. Whether you want to bounce on giant underground nets or zip through the air, it's the ultimate family day out.
Why Stay at Rhiw Goch Inn?
Look, I’m building something special here. When you stay with us, you’re not just getting a room; you’re getting a piece of Welsh history. Our self-catering holiday apartments like The Hideaway offer the best sunset views in the house, and The Lodge House is perfect for families who want a bit of luxury with their mountain air.
We’re right in the heart of everything. You can walk straight onto the mountains, hop on a mountain bike for the Coed y Brenin Forest Park, or just sit on your porch and watch the sky turn pink over the Rhinogydd.
If you're looking for the perfect family holiday destination in North Wales, come and see us. I’ll probably be the one with the hammer or a paintbrush, but I’ve always got time for a chat about where to find the best local ale.
