A breathtaking sunset over the Rhinogydd mountains as seen from the historic grounds of Rhiw Goch Inn, featuring the silhouette of a classic Welsh stone building

Morning from Trawsfynydd! Peter Dive here. I’m currently sitting with a lukewarm brew, watching the mist roll off the Rhinogydd mountains and trying to decide if the dust on my boots is from 2026 or the original 16th-century foundations I’ve been poking at.

If you’ve been hanging around the Snowdonia (or Eryri, as we locals love) subreddits lately, you’ll see the same debate raging every time the sun manages to peek through the Welsh clouds for more than ten minutes: "Should I camp or should I book a lodge?"

Look, I get it. I’m biased. I run the Rhiw Goch Inn (LL41 4UY), and we’ve spent years making sure we offer both. But after seeing enough "Help, my tent flooded in June" posts on Reddit, I figured it was time to weigh in from a first-hand perspective. Whether you’re here for the mountain biking at Coed y Brenin Forest Park or you're tackling the big man (Snowdon) himself, your choice of "home base" can make or break your holiday.

So, let’s settle this. Lodge or Camping? Here is the lowdown on the ultimate Snowdonia holiday.

1. The Weather Factor: "Is May actually Summer?"

One of the most common questions on Findaquestion is whether it’s too cold to camp in North Wales in May.

The Reality: Yesterday I was in a t-shirt; today I considered putting the underfloor heating on. That’s Wales for you.

  • Camping: If you’re in a tent on our Rhiw Goch Inn campsite, you’re at one with nature. That means 5 a.m. sunrises and the smell of fresh grass. But if a North Welsh "shower" (read: deluge) hits, you’re playing Tetris with wet socks.
  • The Lodge: This is where The Lodge House wins. I personally oversaw the renovation, and let me tell you, that underfloor heating is a game-changer. When the wind is howling off the peaks, there is nothing like coming home to a warm stone-walled retreat.

2. The Battle of the Views

Reddit user MountainMooch asked: "Where can I get the best sunset views in Snowdonia without hiking at midnight?"

Honestly? Right here at LL41 4UY.

  • The Camping View: Our five electric pitches are positioned to give you a front-row seat to the Rhinogydd range. There's something magical about unzipping a tent and seeing the mountains before you've even had coffee.
  • The Lodge View: The Hideaway Bed apartment was designed for sunset chasers. You can sit in the window seat with a glass of something cold and watch the sky turn pink over the valley. It’s "The Instagram Shot" without the muddy boots.

3. Post-Hike Recovery: Luxury vs. Authenticity

After a day of mountain biking at Coed y Brenin or hiking the Rhyd Ddu path up Snowdon, your body is going to have opinions.

  1. The Luxury Route: The Lodge House features a luxury cast iron bath. I’ve seen grown men weep with joy at the sight of it after a day on the trails. You’ve got a king-size bed, a full kitchen for a massive pasta carb-load, and enough space for the whole family (plus the sofa bed for that one friend who always tags along).
  2. The Authentic Route: Camping is about the stories. It's about the communal feeling of the campsite, the electric hookups (we have 5, so grab them fast!), and the feeling of being "out there." It’s cheaper, sure, but it’s also a different kind of soul-refill.

4. Addressing Your Reddit Concerns (The Peter Dive FAQ)

"Is wild camping legal?"

Short answer: No. Long answer: Please don't. Eryri National Park is a delicate ecosystem. Stick to official sites like ours where we have proper facilities and you won't get a polite-but-firm "move along" from a local farmer at 2 a.m.

"What about the midges?"

They can be a pest in late June if there's no breeze. If you're in The Hideaway, you just shut the window. If you’re camping, bring the Smidge and a campfire (if we’re not in a dry spell!).

"Is it family-friendly?"

Both are! The Lodge House is great for kids because you can actually dry their clothes after they inevitably find the only puddle in Trawsfynydd. But kids also love the adventure of the campsite. We’ve got plenty of space for them to be kids.

5. My Professional Opinion (As a Man with a Hammer)

I’m currently in the middle of restoring the 16th-century tavern here at Rhiw Goch. It’s a labor of love, and it’s reminded me why people have been coming to this specific spot for centuries. Whether they were 12th-century travelers or 21st-century hikers, they all wanted the same thing: a spectacular view and a place to rest their heads.

If you want a Snowdonia Lodge experience that feels like a home away from home, book the Lodge House. It’s got the history, the comfort, and the "wow" factor.

If you want a Snowdon holiday that feels like a rugged adventure, bring the tent and book one of our electric pitches. You’ll get the same sunset for a fraction of the price.

Ready to book your North Wales escape?

Don't leave it to the last minute, our summer slots (especially the Bank Holidays) fill up faster than a pub on a sunny Saturday.

Stay tuned for my evening post, where I’ll be listing the top 5 pubs within 20 minutes of Trawsfynydd (yes, I’ve done the "research" personally).

Cheers,
