If there’s one thing I’ve learned from living and breathing the air here at Rhiw Goch Inn, it’s that the magic of Snowdonia doesn’t clock off at 5 PM. In fact, that’s when the real show begins. I’m Peter Dive, and if you’ve stayed with us before, you know I’m usually found either tinkering with the renovations on our 16th-century Grade 2 listed Inn or pointing guests toward the best mountain bike trails in the Coed y Brenin Forest Park.
But when the sun starts to dip behind the Rhinogydd mountains, the question I get asked most is: "Peter, where can we take the kids for dinner?" or "Where’s the best spot for a pint with a view?"
Well, pull up a chair. Whether you’re staying in our luxury Lodge House, cozying up in The Hideaway, or pitching a tent on our scenic campsite, this is my personal, local-approved guide to the best evening vibes and family fun within an hour of our front gate at LL41 4UY.
1. The Ultimate Sundowner: Right Here at Rhiw Goch
I might be biased, but you don't actually have to leave the property to see the best sunset in North Wales. Our campsite and the terrace at The Hideaway look directly across the valley. There’s nothing quite like cracking open a local Welsh ale, sitting on one of our stone walls, and watching the sky turn a bruised purple over the peaks.
For the families, it’s the perfect time to let the kids run off that last bit of energy in our open fields while you get the BBQ going. If you're staying in The Lodge House, the underfloor heating and that luxury cast iron bath are waiting for you once the stars come out, and trust me, being in a Dark Sky Reserve, those stars are something else.
2. Adventure Doesn't Sleep: Zip World & Underground Fun
Just a 15-minute hop up the A470 to Blaenau Ffestiniog (LL41 3NB), you’ll find Zip World Llechwedd. While the big zips usually wind down in the late afternoon, they often run twilight sessions or events in the caverns.
Even if you aren’t hurtling through the air, a walk around the slate works as the shadows lengthen is incredibly atmospheric. It’s a huge hit with the kids because it feels like stepping onto a film set.
- Pro Tip: If the Welsh weather decides to be… well, Welsh… head to CellB in Blaenau. It’s an old police station converted into a boutique cinema and arts venue. It’s quirky, personal, and they show everything from blockbusters to indie gems. It’s my go-to for a rainy Tuesday night.
3. Best Local Pubs & Grub (The "Dive" Recommendations)
When you've been hiking Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) or biking the Antur Stiniog trails, you need proper fuel. Here are my top picks within a short drive of Trawsfynydd:
- The Bryn, Gellilydan (LL41 4EN): Literally just down the road from us. It’s a proper, traditional Welsh pub. They often have live music, and the atmosphere is always welcoming. Perfect for a post-ride pint.
- Y Pengwern Arms, Llan Ffestiniog (LL41 4PB): This is a community-run pub that oozes character. Great for meeting locals and hearing the Welsh language in its natural habitat.
- Red Chillies, Blaenau Ffestiniog (LL41 3ES): If you fancy something different, the Indian food here is top-tier. I’ve had many a late-night curry here after a long day of renovations.
- Caffi Kiki at Lakeside Café, Tanygrisiau (LL41 3SU): On select evenings, they do incredible Greek food. Sitting by the water with a plate of souvlaki? Yes, please.
4. Family Walks with a Sunset Reward
If you’ve got the dogs with you (and yes, we are dog-friendly!), a sunset stroll around Llyn Trawsfynydd is a must. The path is mostly flat, making it easy for little legs. The way the light hits the water and the silhouette of the (now decommissioned) power station: which looks more like a sci-fi fortress: is breathtaking.
- Address: Llyn Trawsfynydd, Trawsfynydd, LL41 4RW.
- Distance from Rhiw Goch: 5 minutes.
5. Answering Your Burning Questions (The Reddit/FAQ Corner)
I spend a fair bit of time looking at what people are asking about our neck of the woods. Here are a few answers to common queries:
"Is North Wales boring for teenagers in the evening?"
Hardly! Between the night-climbing sessions often held in the area and the thrill of Zip World, there’s plenty. Plus, our WiFi at the Inn is strong enough for their gaming needs: though I always encourage them to look at the view instead!
"Where's the best place for a romantic evening near Trawsfynydd?"
Grab a bottle of wine and head to Portmeirion (LL48 6ET). It’s about a 20-minute drive. While the main village has entry fees during the day, a late afternoon walk through the "Wilderness" woods and along the estuary is pure magic.
"What’s the best base for mountain biking in Snowdonia?"
You’re looking at it! We are perfectly positioned between Coed y Brenin and Antur Stiniog. You can be on the trails in 10 minutes and back here for a hot shower and a BBQ by sunset. Check out our guide to mountain biking in Wales for more.
Plan Your Escape to Rhiw Goch Inn
We’re currently working hard on the main Inn restoration: it’s a labor of love, bringing a 12th-century site back to its former glory. Soon, we’ll have a tavern and games room right on site for those cozy evenings.
Until then, our self-catering apartments and campsite offer the ultimate peace and quiet in the heart of Snowdonia National Park. Whether you’re here for the adrenaline or the "hygge" (or the Welsh equivalent, Hiraeth), we’ve got a spot for you.
