Evening, folks. Peter Dive here. I’m currently sitting out on the porch of The Lodge House with a cold drink, watching the sun dip behind the Rhinogydd mountains. There’s a specific kind of quiet you only get here in Bronaber, broken only by the occasional sheep or the distant hum of a mountain bike heading back from Coed y Brenin.
It’s June 1st, 2026, and the air is finally holding onto that summer warmth. We’ve had a busy day on the tools over at the old Inn building. For those of you following the journey, the restoration of our 16th-century Grade 2 listed tavern is moving along. Every time I peel back a layer of fire-damaged timber, I’m reminded of the history this place holds, dating back to the 12th century. It’s going to be something special when the games room and the tavern are finally back in action, but for now, I’m just enjoying the fact that our guests in the Hideaway Bed and the Lodge are having the time of their lives exploring our backyard.
If you’re planning a holiday in North Wales and staying with us at Rhiw Goch Inn, you might be wondering where to take the kids or where to find a pint that doesn't involve me handing you a bottle from my own fridge. Snowdonia (or Eryri, as we call it) is huge, but you don’t need to drive for hours to find the good stuff.
Here’s my personal local’s guide to the best family activities and bites to eat within an hour of LL41 4UY.
1. Right on the Doorstep: Llyn Trawsfynydd (2 mins away)
Address: Trawsfynydd, LL41 4RW
Why I love it: You don’t even need to start the car for this one. Llyn Trawsfynydd is a massive man-made reservoir with a cracking 8-mile cycle and walking loop.
If you’ve got the kids with you, it’s flat enough for little legs but scenic enough that you won't get bored. There’s something meditative about the water here. I often head down there early in the morning before I start work on the Inn. If you’re into fishing, it’s one of the best spots in Wales for brown trout. For a family day out, pack a picnic from the local shop in Trawsfynydd village and just head for the shoreline.
2. Adrenaline and Gravity: Coed y Brenin (10 mins away)
Address: Ganllwyd, Dolgellau, LL40 2HZ
Why I love it: This is the UK’s first dedicated mountain bike centre. Whether you’re a pro or a "wobbler" like me, there’s a trail for you.
I’ve seen plenty of families head out from our campsite in the morning, bikes strapped to the back, and come back covered in mud and grins. They have excellent bike rentals and a solid café for that post-ride cake. It’s not just for bikes, though; the walking trails through the forest are world-class.

Our campsite is perfectly positioned for mountain bikers heading to Coed y Brenin.
3. Underground Adventures: Zip World & Bounce Below (15 mins away)
Address: Llechwedd Slate Caverns, Blaenau Ffestiniog, LL41 3NB
Why I love it: If you want to impress the teenagers, this is it. Blaenau Ffestiniog is just up the road, and what they’ve done with the old slate caverns is mind-blowing.
Bounce Below is basically a giant subterranean trampoline park inside a cavern twice the size of St Paul’s Cathedral. And then there’s Zip World Titan, where you can zip across the slate landscape. It’s rugged, it’s loud, and it’s quintessentially North Wales. Pro tip: It can get chilly underground even in June, so bring a jumper!
4. The Italian Job: Portmeirion (20 mins away)
Address: Minffordd, Penrhyndeudraeth, LL48 6ER
Why I love it: This place is surreal. Built by Clough Williams-Ellis between 1925 and 1975, it’s an Italianate village dropped into the Welsh coast.
It’s a fantastic day out for families who want something a bit more relaxed. The gardens are stunning, and the "Prisoner" fans among you will recognize the architecture. If you’re visiting this month, keep an eye out for the Eryri’s Soundscape 2026 events, they often hold cultural workshops and performances along the coast that are well worth the short drive.
5. Castles and Coasts: Harlech Castle (25 mins away)
Address: Harlech, LL46 2YH
Why I love it: You can’t come to Wales and not visit a castle. Harlech is a UNESCO World Heritage site and sits dramatically on a rock overlooking the sea.
After you’ve done the history bit, head down to Harlech Beach. It’s one of those vast, sandy expanses where the kids can run for miles. The views back up to the castle from the dunes at sunset are, in my humble opinion, some of the best in the country.
6. Where to Eat: My "Best Bites" List
After a day of hiking Snowdon (which you can access directly from some of the trails near us) or zipping through caverns, you’re going to be hungry. Here are my top picks:
- The Grapes Hotel (Maentwrog, LL41 3HY): A 17th-century coaching inn just 10 minutes away. Great beer garden and very family-friendly. It’s got that old-world charm that I’m trying to bring back to the Rhiw Goch.
- The Brondanw Arms (Garreg, LL48 6ER): Also known as "The Ring." It’s quirky, historic, and serves some of the best local ales. Perfect for a quiet evening meal.
- Y Ganolfan (Trawsfynydd village): For something quick and local. It’s the heart of the village.
- Betws-y-Coed (LL24 0AY): About 30 minutes away. This village is the "Gateway to Snowdonia" and is packed with cafes and bistros. If you're heading there on June 20th, don't miss the Gŵyl Roc y Ddol festival in nearby Bethesda, it’s a bit of a drive but the atmosphere is electric.
Why Stay at Rhiw Goch Inn?
I might be biased, but there’s something magic about this spot. When we bought the property, we knew we weren't just buying buildings; we were taking on a piece of Welsh heritage.
Whether you’re staying in The Lodge House with its luxury cast iron bath (perfect for soaking those post-hike legs) or pitching a tent on our electric pitches, you’re getting the "Real Wales."
We’re right on the A470, which makes getting to all these spots easy, but once you turn into our drive, the noise of the world just… stops.

The Hideaway: Your cozy base for Snowdonia adventures.
Peter’s Personal June Recommendation
If you’re here mid-month (June 13-14), take the 50-minute drive up to the Conwy Pirate Festival. It’s a bit further, but for kids (and big kids like me), seeing Conwy’s medieval walls swarming with pirates is a hoot. Just make sure you’re back here in time to see the sunset from the campsite. It never gets old.
Ready to book your Snowdonia getaway? Head over to our booking page and come say hello. I’ll likely be the one with a hammer in my hand and a smile on my face, working on the next chapter of the Rhiw Goch Inn.
See you soon,
