It’s Thursday evening here at the Rhiw Goch Inn, and I’m currently sitting out on the terrace watching the sun pull its nightly vanishing act behind the Rhinogydd mountains. If you’ve never seen a North Wales sunset from LL41 4UY, you’re missing out on one of life’s true "pinch-me" moments.

I’m Peter Dive, and if there’s one thing I know better than the restoration blueprints of our 16th-century inn, it’s where to find a proper pint and a plate of food that actually touches the sides after a day of exploring. When you’re staying in a Snowdonia lodge, specifically one of ours, you’ve got the best of both worlds: the peace of the national park and some of the best "grub" (as we locals call it) just a stone's throw away.

People on Reddit are always asking: "Where can I get a decent Sunday roast near Trawsfynydd?" or "What's the best dog-friendly pub after hiking Snowdon?" Well, pull up a chair. I’ve done the "hard work" of testing these spots myself. Here is your ultimate local guide to the best pubs and restaurants within an hour’s drive of the Rhiw Goch Inn.

1. The Legendary Local: The Grapes Hotel (Gellilydan)

Distance: 5 minutes (2.4 miles)
Postcode: LL41 4EN

If you want history, atmosphere, and portions that would intimidate a mountain giant, you head to The Grapes Hotel. It was recently voted in the top 10 great British pubs worth travelling for in 2024, and honestly, it’s not hard to see why.

It’s a 17th-century coaching inn just down the road from us. The low beams and crackling fires make it the perfect spot when the Welsh mist starts rolling in. Their steak and ale pie is the stuff of local legend. It’s the kind of place where you can walk in with muddy boots (and a tired dog) and feel like you’ve lived there your whole life.

  • Peter’s Pro Tip: Their Sunday lunch is incredibly popular. If you’re planning a weekend holiday in North Wales, book this one in advance!

2. The Artistic Choice: Brondanw Arms / "The Ring" (Llanfrothen)

Distance: 15 minutes (8.5 miles)
Postcode: LL48 6SS

Locally known as "The Ring," this is one of my personal favourites. It’s part of the Brondanw Estate (created by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis of Portmeirion fame). The decor is wonderfully quirky: think slate floors, local art, and a vibe that is purely Welsh.

The food here is elevated pub fare. They do a fantastic Welsh lamb, and the beer garden has views that will make you want to sell your house and move to the valley. It’s quiet, authentic, and exactly what a Snowdonia retreat should feel like.

3. Riverside Bliss: The George III (Penmaenpool)

Distance: 25 minutes (15 miles)
Postcode: LL40 1YD

If you’re heading south towards Dolgellau, you have to stop at The George III. It sits right on the edge of the Mawddach Estuary. On a clear day, sitting on the deck with a cold cider watching the tide come in is unbeatable.

The building used to be two separate structures: a pub and a ship chandler’s: now joined into one beautiful historic inn. It’s a great spot for families because you can walk the Mawddach Trail (a flat, easy path for kids) right from the doorstep before rewarding yourselves with some high-quality gastro-pub food.

4. Mountain Fuel: Snowdonia Parc Pub (Waunfawr)

Distance: 45 minutes (25 miles)
Postcode: LL55 4AQ

For the craft beer enthusiasts staying at Rhiw Goch Inn, this is a mandatory pilgrimage. This place has its own microbrewery on-site. After you’ve tackled the Snowdon Ranger Path, stop here for a pint of their "Theodore Stout."

It’s unpretentious and focuses on what matters: good beer and hearty fuel. If you’re hungry, their Beef Madras has gained a bit of a cult following among hikers.

5. Coastal Vibes: The Moorings (Borth-y-Gest)

Distance: 25 minutes (14 miles)
Postcode: LL49 9TR

Sometimes you want to swap the mountain peaks for the sea breeze. Borth-y-Gest is a hidden gem of a village near Porthmadog. The Moorings offers a slightly more "bistro" feel than your standard pub.

It’s fantastic for a long lunch. They use a lot of local seafood and the view across the bay towards the mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia) is spectacular. It’s a great spot to take the kids for some gelato after a walk along the coastal path to Black Rock Sands.

Why Stay Near Trawsfynydd (LL41 4UY)?

Staying at the Rhiw Goch Inn puts you right in the bullseye of all these locations. Whether you’re looking for accommodation in North Wales for a hiking trip or a cheap holiday let for the family, our location is the ultimate base camp.

We are currently in the middle of a massive restoration of the main 16th-century inn building. It’s a labour of love. While we work on bringing the historic bar back to life, our self-catering lodges and apartments are fully open and ready for guests. Imagine coming back from a day at Coed y Brenin Forest Park (only 10 minutes away!) and relaxing on your own private deck with a view of the Rhinogydd mountains.

Local News & Events (May 2026)

If you’re visiting us this month, keep an eye out for the local agricultural shows starting to pop up in the surrounding villages. There’s also the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways running special evening "Jazz Trains" – a brilliant way to see the landscape with a drink in hand.

Also, for the mountain bikers, Coed y Brenin (LL40 2HZ) has just updated some of its red-graded trails, so it’s the perfect time to test your suspension (and your nerves).

6. The "Hidden" Gem: Tanronnen Hotel (Beddgelert)

Distance: 20 minutes (12 miles)
Postcode: LL55 4YB

Beddgelert is arguably the prettiest village in Wales, and the Tanronnen Hotel is a fantastic place to soak it all in. They have a lovely outdoor seating area right by the river. It’s the perfect spot to grab a burger and watch the tourists try to navigate the narrow stone bridge.

  • Family Activity: After lunch, take the short, flat walk to "Gelert’s Grave" and tell the kids the legend of the faithful hound. It’s a rite of passage for any holiday in North Wales.

7. Tapas with a Welsh Twist: Olif (Betws-y-Coed)

Distance: 30 minutes (18 miles)
Postcode: LL24 0AY

If you’re tired of standard pub chips (is that even possible?), head to Betws-y-Coed. Olif serves Welsh tapas. Think small plates of local cheeses, Welsh beef, and seasonal vegetables served with a creative flair. It’s a bit different, very cool, and perfect for a date night while you’re staying at your Snowdonia lodge.

Peter’s Final Thoughts on Pub Life

There is a reason I chose to put down roots here at the Rhiw Goch Inn. The community, the landscape, and yes, the beer, are second to none. When you stay with us, you aren't just getting a room; you're getting a slice of the real North Wales.

We love seeing our guests head out in the morning with a map and come back in the evening with stories of the "best fish and chips they've ever had" or a hidden pub they found in the middle of nowhere.
