There’s something about a North Wales sunset that just hits different. Maybe it’s the way the light catches the rugged peaks of the Rhinogydd, or perhaps it’s just that first sip of a cold pint after a long day of hiking. Whatever it is, if you’re staying with us at Rhiw Goch Inn, you’ve already bagged a front-row seat to one of the best shows in Snowdonia.
I’m Peter Dive, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned while renovating our 16th-century inn, it’s where to find the best "grub" and the most "lush" views when the sun starts its descent. Whether you’re bunking in our Lodge House with the kids or enjoying the peace of The Hideaway, you shouldn't have to spend your evening scouring the internet.
So, I’ve done the legwork for you. Here are my top 10 picks for sunset pubs and family-friendly eateries within an hour’s drive of our base here in Trawsfynydd (LL41 4UY). Grab your keys, keep your eyes on the road (not the mountains!), and let's get stuck in.
1. Rhiw Goch Inn (Right on your doorstep!)
Address: Bronaber, Trawsfynydd, Blaenau Ffestiniog LL41 4UY
Drive time: 0 minutes (You’re already here!)
I might be biased, but you really can’t beat home turf. Right now, we’re knee-deep in restoring the old 16th-century tavern, bringing back that 12th-century history one stone at a time, but our grounds and camping pitches offer the most spectacular sunset views in the valley. If you’re staying in the Lodge or the Hideaway, just step outside with a glass of wine. The sun sets directly over the Rhinogydd mountains, painting the sky in shades of violet and gold. It’s the perfect spot for the kids to run around on the grass while you soak in the silence of Snowdonia.
2. The Grapes Hotel, Maentwrog
Address: Maentwrog, Blaenau Ffestiniog LL41 3HY
Drive time: 10 minutes
Just a hop, skip, and a jump down the A470, you’ll find The Grapes. This is a proper historic coaching inn. It’s got that "old world" feel that makes you want to settle in for hours. The food is honest, hearty, and exactly what you need after a day at Coed y Brenin. They have a lovely outdoor seating area where you can watch the evening light filter through the wooded valley. It’s a firm favourite for a family dinner that feels a bit special without being "fancy-schmancy."
3. The Oakeley Arms, Maentwrog
Address: Tan-y-Bwlch, Maentwrog, Blaenau Ffestiniog LL41 3YU
Drive time: 12 minutes
If you’ve got a carload of hungry kids, The Oakeley Arms is a lifesaver. It’s huge, meaning you can usually find a table even during the busy May half-term. The beer garden is fantastic for catching those last rays of sun. I’ve spent many an evening here thinking about the next phase of the Rhiw Goch renovation. It’s reliable, friendly, and the portions are big enough to satisfy even the most exhausted mountain biker.

4. The George III, Penmaenpool
Address: Penmaenpool, Dolgellau LL40 1YD
Drive time: 25 minutes
This is one for the "wow" factor. Situated right on the edge of the Mawddach Estuary, the views here are legendary. If the tide is in, the sunset reflects off the water in a way that’ll make you forget about your phone (unless you’re taking photos for Instagram, obviously). It’s a bit of a drive towards Dolgellau, but 100% worth it. They do great local ales and the atmosphere is top-notch.
5. The Victoria Inn, Llanbedr
Address: Llanbedr, Gwynedd LL45 2LD
Drive time: 30 minutes
Heading towards the coast? Stop at The Vic. It’s got a brilliant riverside garden where the kids can watch the ducks while you wait for your steaks. Llanbedr is a lovely little village, and being so close to the coast, the air just feels different here. It’s a great "mid-way" point if you’ve spent the afternoon at Harlech Beach and aren't quite ready to head back to the Lodge just yet.
6. The Ship Inn, Borth-y-Gest
Address: Borth-y-Gest, Porthmadog LL49 9TR
Drive time: 25 minutes
Borth-y-Gest is like something out of a storybook. It’s a tiny harbour village just around the corner from Porthmadog. The Ship Inn overlooks the bay, and on a clear evening, the colours across the estuary are mind-blowing. It’s a very casual, family-friendly vibe. Pro tip: Get there an hour before sunset, have a quick stroll along the coastal path, then settle in for some fish and chips.
7. Ty Gwyn Hotel, Betws-y-Coed
Address: Betws-y-Coed LL24 0SG
Drive time: 30 minutes
If you’ve been exploring the waterfalls or the shops in Betws-y-Coed, Ty Gwyn is the place to be. It’s a 16th-century inn (much like our own!) and the food is seriously good. It’s cozy, cramped in the best way possible, and full of character. It doesn't have the "wide open" sunset views of the coast, but the golden hour light hitting the stone buildings of Betws is something to behold.
8. The Last Inn, Barmouth
Address: Barmouth LL42 1EL
Drive time: 40 minutes
You can’t visit North Wales without a trip to Barmouth. The Last Inn is one of the oldest pubs in town, complete with an actual spring running through the bar! It’s right by the harbour, so you can watch the sun go down over the sea and then tuck into some proper pub grub. It gets busy, especially on weekends, but the atmosphere is electric.
9. Royal Ship Hotel, Dolgellau
Address: Queens Square, Dolgellau LL40 1AR
Drive time: 20 minutes
Dolgellau is my go-to for a quick trip into town. The Royal Ship is right in the square and has a great, consistent menu. It’s perfect if you want to combine a bit of "city" feel (well, as close as we get to a city around here!) with your evening meal. It’s very welcoming to families and dog-friendly too, which is always a bonus.
10. The Moorings, Borth-y-Gest
Address: Borth-y-Gest, Porthmadog LL49 9TR
Drive time: 25 minutes
Technically more of a bistro/restaurant, but it’s too good to leave off the list. If you want a slightly more "refined" sunset meal with a view of the boats, this is it. It’s right on the front. It’s the kind of place where memories are made: good food, great wine, and the sun dipping below the horizon.
Why Stay at Rhiw Goch Inn?
After you’ve filled your belly and watched the sky turn pink, there’s nothing better than coming back to the peace and quiet of the Rhiw Goch Inn grounds.
We’re perfectly positioned for anyone looking to tick off their Snowdon walks or hit the mountain bike trails. Our campsite is currently open with five electric pitches for those who like to be close to nature, and the Lodge House is ready for families who want a bit of luxury (think underfloor heating and a roll-top bath) after a day in the wild.
We’re passionate about restoring this bit of Welsh history. Every guest who stays with us is helping us bring the old Inn back to life. So, if you’re planning your next holiday in North Wales, come and see us. I’ll probably be around somewhere, likely covered in dust from the renovation or enjoying the same sunset as you.
