Morning, everyone! Peter Dive here. I’m currently sitting outside the Rhiw Goch Inn with a steaming mug of coffee, watching the early morning light dance over the Rhinogydd mountains. There’s something about a North Wales morning in June that just hits differently. The air is crisp, the sheep are vocal, and the sheer potential of the day ahead is enough to make you forget about the renovations I’ve got waiting for me inside our 16th-century tavern.
I’ve been spending a lot of time on Reddit and search forums lately, mostly while I should be sanding floorboards, and I’ve noticed a ton of you are asking the same questions: “Is it better to camp or book a lodge in Snowdonia?” “Where can I find the best Snowdon holiday base?” and “Is wild camping actually legal?” (Spoiler: strictly speaking, no, but I’ve got a better solution for you).
So, consider this your Snowdonia Holiday 101. Whether you’re a hardcore mountain biker heading to Coed y Brenin or a family looking for a luxury Snowdonia lodge experience, I’ve put together this guide based on my years here at Rhiw Goch Inn in Bronaber, near Trawsfynydd.
1. The Great Debate: To Camp or To Lodge?
This is the question that dominates the search results every summer. In my experience, it comes down to how much you enjoy the "Welsh Afternoon." You see, in Snowdonia, we can have a glorious morning that looks like a Mediterranean postcard, and by 3 PM, the clouds roll in for a quick "refreshment."
The Lodge Life (For the Comfort Seekers)
If you’re like me and you appreciate a bit of luxury after a long day of hiking, our holiday accommodation options are designed to be your sanctuary.
- The Lodge House: This is my pride and joy. It’s a beautifully renovated two-story home with underfloor heating (essential for those odd chilly June nights) and a luxury cast iron bath that is basically a religious experience for your muscles after tackling Snowdon. It sleeps a whole family comfortably with a king-size bed, two singles, and a sofa bed.
- The Hideaway Bed: Perfect for couples. It’s a cozy one-bedroom apartment with views of the sunset over the mountains that are, quite frankly, better than anything on Netflix.
The Camping Vibe (For the Adventurers)
If you want to wake up, unzip your tent, and be in the scenery, our campsite is the way to go. We have:
- 5 electric pitches for campervans or those who can't live without their gadgets.
- Plenty of space for traditional tent camping.
- Direct access to the wild, open spaces of the National Park.

2. Answering Your Reddit Questions: Snowdonia Summer Edition
I’ve pulled a few of the most popular searches to give you the straight-talking, Peter Dive perspective.
"Is wild camping allowed in Snowdonia?"
The short answer? Not really. The National Park Authority recommends staying in official campsites to protect our beautiful landscape. If you wild camp on access land, you’re technically trespassing without the landowner's permission. Plus, why bother with the stress when you can pitch up at Rhiw Goch Inn (LL41 4UY), have a proper shower, and be right next to the trails?
"What’s the weather really like in June/July?"
Expect everything. I always tell guests: "If you don't like the weather in Wales, wait ten minutes." Bring high-quality waterproofs, even if the forecast says sun. The "Welsh Afternoon" is a real thing, mornings are usually clear, so get your big walks done early!
"Where’s the best base for mountain biking?"
You’re looking at it. We are just a stone's throw from Coed y Brenin Forest Park. You can literally ride from here. If you're coming for the trails, staying in Bronaber or Trawsfynydd saves you hours of driving and gives you more time on the saddle. Read more about Coed y Brenin here.
3. Peter’s Top 3 Morning Activities Near Trawsfynydd
If you're staying with us this summer, don't just sit around (unless you're enjoying the view). Here’s what I recommend for a perfect morning:
- The Trawsfynydd Lake Loop: A stunning, relatively flat walk or cycle around the reservoir. The views of the nuclear power station (which looks like a Bond villain’s lair) against the backdrop of the mountains is iconic.
- Early Bird Snowdon Hike: Drive about 30-40 minutes north to the base of Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa). If you start by 7 AM, you’ll beat the worst of the crowds and be back at the Inn for a late lunch.
- Coed y Brenin Trails: Even if you aren't a hardcore biker, the walking trails here are world-class and provide some of the best forest bathing in the UK.
4. Why Rhiw Goch Inn? (A Bit of Witty History)
I didn't just buy this place because I liked the view (though that helped). The Rhiw Goch Inn dates back to the 12th century, and the current Grade 2 listed building is a 16th-century masterpiece. Yes, we had a bit of a "warm" situation in 2018 with a fire, but we’re rebuilding it better than ever.
We’re turning it back into a proper pub with a games room and more apartments. For now, our guests love the tranquility. You’re right on the A470, so getting here is a breeze, but once you turn into our driveway, the rest of the world just disappears. It’s the perfect Holiday Wales experience: historic, slightly rugged, and incredibly welcoming.
5. Pro-Tips for Your Summer Visit
- Book Mid-Week: Everyone wants to be here on a Saturday. If you can swing a Tuesday to Thursday trip, you’ll have the trails (and our campsite) much more to yourself.
- The Midgie Strategy: Summer in Wales means midgies. They aren't as bad as the Scottish ones, but they’re still annoying. Bring some Smidge or Avon Skin So Soft (an old local secret).
- Local Postcode: Keep LL41 4UY in your SatNav. It’ll bring you straight to our gate in Bronaber.

Ready to Book Your Snowdonia Escape?
Whether you’re looking for a Snowdonia lodge with all the trimmings or a simple spot to pitch your tent under the stars, we’ve got you covered. My team and I (and probably the local sheep) are ready to welcome you to the heart of the National Park.
Don’t leave it until the last minute: summer dates at the Rhiw Goch Inn fill up fast!
